Stranding Capital

The worst aspect of central planning is not just that it misallocates capital, but that it actively destroys it. Centrally planned economies, from the Soviet Union on down, remain littered to this day with stranded assets existing in a largely unrecoverable state. EV subsidies are doing the same thing by wrecking the profitability of companies trying to cash in on such schemes.

The energy unit of Panasonic Holdings missed its operating profit guidance for the past business year due to lower electric vehicle (EV) battery production in Japan and a fall in sales of consumer products, the company said on Thursday.

Operating income for the key segment, which makes batteries for Tesla and other automakers, totaled ¥88.8 billion ($570.18 million) in the year that ended in March, missing its own ¥113 billion forecast, Panasonic said.

Gradually, Then Suddenly

@WallStreetSilv

Credit card balances that were 30 days or more past due rose to 8.9% in Q1.

In 2019 the rate was about 7.0%. Before the Great Recession, it was between 8.5% and 12% (red line).

“Other” consumer credit balances – personal loans, payday loans, and Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) loans, etc. – that were 30 days or more past due inched up to 7.6%, a tad above where it was in 2018 and 2019 (blue).

Dave’s Not Here

Real life is not a Cheech and Chong bit.

Driving- More and more Canadians on drugs are crashing cars.

Based on traffic fatalities, driving while stoned is now a bigger problem than speeding, alcohol, and even distracted driving.

One striking difference noted by the TIRF, however, is that while the young tested positive for cannabis, those 65 and up were usually under the influence of central nervous system (CND) depressants which, according to the National Cancer Institute, includes anything that slows the brain, relaxes the muscles, or prevents anxiety (essentially everything from benzodiazepines to barbiturates and even some sleeping pills).

You Want Budget Cuts?

I’ll give you some budget cuts.

Globe and Mail- Trudeau government cuts budget of Information Commissioner

Ms. Maynard told the House of Commons committee on access to information, privacy and ethics Thursday that the Treasury Board department reduced her budget by $700,000.

“In concrete terms, this represents a significant portion of my overall IT budget or money to cover the costs of defending my orders in court or funding for a full team of investigators,” she said. “Basically this reduction in my budget will spell long delays for complainants who are seeking information from government institutions.”

Y2Kyoto: March Of The Killer Trees

Oh noes!

Trees are feasting on decades of carbon dioxide emissions and growing bigger as a result, according to a new study of U.S. forests.

Scientists tracked wood volume in 10 different tree groups from 1997 to 2017, finding that all except aspen-birch grew larger. Over that same period, carbon dioxide levels went from 363 parts per million to 405 parts per million, owing largely to the burning of fossil fuels. More abundant CO2 accelerates photosynthesis, causing plants to grow faster, a phenomenon known as “carbon fertilization.” The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

I mean, everything about this has to be bad.

Don’t Mess With Texas

Greg Abbott pardons Daniel Perry.

Perry, a veteran who was driving an Uber at the time, was sentenced to 25 years for defending himself during BLM riots against a protestor who approached his car carrying an AK-47.

Prosecutors pointed to his “racist online comments” and psychological experts testified on how dangerous he was.

The Austin police detective who was the lead investigator on the case later testified that the DA put pressure on them to withhold exculpatory evidence from the grand jury.
