The 86% Solution

“I commend the RCMP for their approach. There are people who have been denied opportunities for much too long simply because they don’t show ability in their desired field. Our belated recognition as a society of the emotional wounds caused by overly strict hiring standards is a watershed event.
This more enlightened approach to hiring should be more broadly implemented, so as to include fire and rescue workers, surgeons, airline pilots, electricians, civil engineers, air-traffic controllers, S.W.A.T. team snipers, rodeo clowns…
Together, we can make this a better world.”

  1. EBD’s sarcastic wit exposes an important point. You can’t have what you want just because you want it, if it creates significant public risk. Filters are supposed to be designed to block debris for a reason, you know.

  2. Aint affirmitive action great.
Hey! I know how we’ll do away with discrimination, we’ll discriminate against those who used to discriminate. Make the son’s pay for the sin’s of the father… forever!!!
Stop the planet. I want off

  3. Mathematics is entirely objective and fair. I have a solution that removes all emotion from the issue. A random number generator is all that is required. Apply. The random number generator will make all future non-union hiring decisions. A special random number generator will be used for judicial appointments, and Crown Corporation executive appointments.
We can even get busy fixing all the injustice in the workplace by firing all the non-union workers, and rehiring using the random number generator.
When we’re done, I’m going to be watching the Jays, loudly cheering for that new blind umpire, the wheelchaired shortstop, and the homeless outfielders. Outrageous and silly, you say?
What makes people think that civil service jobs (especially ones with guns) do not require as much attention to ability and commitment as professional sports? Why is there not equal outrage at the blatant discrimination in the professional sports industry? What principle makes it OK to erode standards in the civil service, but not in professional sports?
Obviously, enough of the herd believes in this horsedung or we wouldn’t be subjected to this less than musical ride.

  4. Well, one could argue that it’s because the public-service industry isn’t professional.

  5. Race based hiring practices annoy me to no end.
Three years ago I was disqualified (despite my impressive and outstanding personality)from a Federal government job located minutes from my home because the position was designated for visible minorities only. I was told to file a complaint with Troika Human Rights Canada (the enforcement group that counts colourful employees for the government).
The RCMP have been doing more than refusing better qualified men and women from their workforce, they are now promoting ‘men’ and ‘women’ because of ‘special qualifications.’ Special qualifications include being an Indian or gay (being black doesn’t count). Special promotions are also being reserved for police-persons that are dumb, cowardly and with known leadership deficiencies.
Mark my word. This nation will not survive anything stronger than an icestorm.

  6. You sure about that ice storm anselm?
Them people have to use chainsaws……… Yikes!!

  7. What usually happens is this:
white guy babysits women, minorities and other lower calibre staff whilst on the job.
white guy is responsible for above people and receives no credit, extra pay or opportunity for advancement (as obviously they are managing others…).
since these organziations are so desparate to put certain types of people in high places, white guy not only protects them but trains them to be his boss, again with no thanks whatsoever.
all of this of course is put into play by old-white guy who shafts young white guy. Meanwhile, the women, immigrants, minorities, natives, gays and whatever are taught to hate white guy. They of course hate the white guy that helps them and learn to love the white guy at top that puts them up the ladder and did squat personally nor paid zilch to see this happen.
this is the landscape today in much of the first corporate world and it ain’t just in the mounties.
am I bitter? oh yeah but that is why I have tried all my life to avoid the corporate world, for this reason mainly.

  8. Our last vestige of national pride being PCd to shyte. I give up. I’m going to go and check out Kate’s motorcycle diaries until I feel better.

  9. Brian,
That’s so bloody true, and the less these people know or the lazier they are, the faster they get PROMOTED UP the food chain to get them out of the department.

  10. I heard from a reliable source that the RCMP were trying to implement the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” mantra (empowerment, circle of influence, etc.). Which sounds all nice & touchy feely until you picture a SWAT team (although I don’t think that’s the name they use) in the back of a van getting ready to bust a drug ring. Guy in charge (?Sargeant? I dunno) “are we all on board, team? Is everyone okay with my plan, or do we need to discuss it further?). Great way to kill a few good cops, wouldn’t you think? For crying out loud, empowerment and military, if not mutually exclusive terms, are pretty damn close, are they not?
I would be curious, however, to see the scale that the 115/96/86 are on – if size & weight are a piece of it, that may account for some of the difference, but then why the big gap between women and minorities (I’m thinking of all those 6′ Asians I’ve met)?
    Yup, time for the firewall.

  11. Why are you guys upset and/or surprized?
The Canadian Charter clearly states that anti-discrimination laws “does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups”. (Section 15)
In other words, the constitution of this country condones discrimination (as long as it is for a PC cause).

  12. I see the Calgary Herald is still trying to “spin” the deaths of the four RCMP Officers at Mayerthorpe, Kerry Williamson writes that the four officers were “guarding” a marjijuans op, and found some stolen car parts in the hut when Roszko murdered them in an abmbush when anyone that is following this story knows that the RCMP was asked to escort a sheriff out to the farm to SIEZE A TRUCK. Only the Sheriff came out alive, the spin never stops, trying to blame this on Marijuans, no mention in the article why Roskzko was in possession of guns after he had already shot a neighbor prior, he should have been in jail anyway for prior convictions. The four mouties were murdered by their own falty police work in my opinion, had nothing to do with marijuans or so-called stolen car parts. This Kerry Williamson and the Calgary Herald must be on the “take” the way I see it.
    Stephen ww 2 vet.
