  1. “Where did all of the Martin family integrity go in just one generation?”
    Answer:____________________________!

  2. No date for the vote yet?
Integrity? Someone check PMPM’s closet maybe he is being true to himself.
Alberta, here I come. As soon as the local government bulldozes my house to put up a McDonalds. Ref. recent Supreme court decision.

  3. Somehow I picture PM quietly folding the letter in half, flipping it over, and scribbling a note on the back “reminder to self, don’t forget to check on my steamships”. The author clearly doesn’t know his audience.

  4. It’s nice to see a letter with an up close and personal perspective. Will Martin ever see it? Not likely.
Before the proliferation of email, politicians (their staff)actually used to get back to you – whether your message was positive or not.
Nowadays it’s not so. I can’t remember the last time someone even acknowledged my correspondence. (actually I think it was an auto-response from the Whitehouse…)
Regardless, cheers to Mr. Wicklum for telling it like it is.

  5. PM offered foreign aid deal
OTTAWA (CP) – Canada’s leading rock musicians want Prime Minister Paul Martin to dramatically boost foreign aid to Africa.

    Dear Mr. Wicklum,
The above news is the country where Paul Martin, Jr., lives now.
Your interest in civic affairs is worthy.
Has Mr. Martin replied to you in kind?
As many Canadians are wont to say, Mr. Wicklum, have a good day.

  6. Don’t expect shame from PM. Only those with a conscience feel it. PM has no such burden and so can lie, backstab and deny all decency with a straight face. Those with no conscience make the best liars.

  7. I’d like to expand on this elder Canadian’s very legitimate question and ask: where did the civil and moral integrity in Canada’s governing elite go in less than one generation?….better yet; where did my individual freedoms go in one generation? Why am I now under the dictatorship of special interest politics enforced through a star chamber of 9 unelected, unaccountable ideocrats? Why have these jurocrats decided that they can dictate what I am allowed to think and express as a conviction of personal conscience? What about the majority of people in this nation that feel as I do? Can the courts and Government legitimately claim closure on an issue in which the public is either evenly divided or in a slight majority against?
This is a black day for Canada and its democracy.

  8. Just a thought – if we had gone by the polls back in the day (if polls had existed), does anyone think women would have ever received the right to vote?
Martin is a thief and an unworthy PM, and he and his crew are destroying our country. But I’m not convinced they’re wrong on this one.

  9. Integrity? LOL Get over it, Canada!
If you understand the relationship between the teamsters’ union and ‘La Cosa Nostra’ you understand the government in Canada.
The revelations about Alphonso Gagliano make it all too clear how business gets done up north.
Look at the movie Casino, based on actual events, as an illustration. The real front man was a guy named Allen R. Glick. He was introduced to a guy named Frank Ranney, who was a pension fund trustee (the only guy who could make loan proposals). Another guy, Frank Balistrieri, would “help” Glick get a loan from Frank Ranney. Who was Balistrieri? Surprise! Mafia boss of Milwaukee.
Result? Argent Corporation, which owned 3 or 4 hotels and 3 or 4 casinos. Probably over $100 million in loans, back in those days when a dollar was a dollar.
The teamsters have been corrupted for a long time. Think about it. Millions of members, thousands of locals, administrative staff and offices, deep relationships with politicians. Sound familiar? Back in Hoffa’s day the Mafia boss of Pennsylvania involved (Don Russell Bufalino); Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano, capo out of Detroit involved; one could go on and on. Tony Acordo sent Anthony Spilotro (the Joe Pesci character) to Vegas to watch out for the mob’s interest.
Anyway, the whole point of this post is that the mob’s relationship with the teamsters is quite similar to their relationship with Canadian government. How could these people do this? Try reading a book called “The Sociopath Next Door” by Martha Stout, PhD.
Corruption as deeply entrenched as organized crime in Canada takes place insidiously over a long period of time. Some people need favors. Some people have gambling habits or visit prostitutes and are blackmailable. Some people make compromises for certain political deals that would be a profit to them. Some people need money in a hurry and loaning institutions don’t like their credit. It goes on and on, but in the end it only winds up being one thing: a thoroughly corrupted racketeering enterprise in direct partnership with gangsters.

  10. Another black day for Canada and its democracy. Where will it end?
When the west wakes up and separates from the ontairidiots who promote this.

  11. I know of one good reason why Alberta needs Ottawa…. to lift their left leg on.
Where will democracy end??? It already has comrade.

  12. Talking about “when will democracy end”? when we have the Calgary Herald and it’s writer Kerry Williamson spinning the murdering of the four RCMP in Mayerthorpe, in todays Herald. how can it end if we listen to the “spin” on the MSM enablers of the fascists in Ottawa. He claims that the four officers were “gaurding a marijuana pot grow, and stolen car parts.” when it should be well known by now by anyone that is following this breakdown in the justice system as the four officers being asked to escort a sherrif to go out to the farm and help the sheriff SEIZE A TRUCK. No mention of why the guy still had fire arms even though he had shot a neighbor in the past. Sloppy sloppy police work, why the hell was Roszko allowd to have guns, and better still why was he not in jail for past offenses. Democracy is only in the “pens” of the MSM and how they interpret it on behalf of their MASTERS. The way I see it.
Forgive me Katie, I posted this twice as I feel it is important for us “tax slaves” to know the truth and show the face of the “enemy within.”

  13. Well, looks to me like PMPM doesn’t give a shit about family if it interferes with politics, power, money, etc.
This is not a man Canadians can trust to rule their nation. Looks like a siginficant minority of people have no sense of morality, ethics, understanding of right and wrong, or a conscience. Just witness the zombielike drivel imparted by the MSM. And the blind compliance of so many people wrt what they’re told to think, say and do. The consequence of this is the election of Liberal governments. I’m sure most readers of SDA understand what’s wrong with that!
I fear it may take something of the magnitude of World War Three to change political, media and social attitudes. A Canadian 9/11 will not be anywhere near enough. If not too much less than half of Americans are still willing to kiss Al-Qaeda’s ass, think how many Canadians will be of this mindset. I say these words with the lessons of history in mind. Don’t get me wrong, I do NOT want WWIII! Nor a terrorist attack either! But I do have realistic views of the way the world works. Other than that, I’m a very optimistic guy. I am certain the Conservatives will soon enough take power and fix all the things the Libby bastards broke.
Of course, anyone is free to disagree with any of the above points. If this was a CBC discussion forum, I’d get flamed like never before!

  14. Very good news today from Statscan.
Statscan study demonstrates that risk of gun death is 8 times higher in the US. Who would have thought that the gun registry is making a difference.
The risk of death by gunshot has been cut in half in Canada and is far smaller than in the United States, Statistics Canada says.
In a study issued on Monday, the federal agency notes that Canadian gun-control laws have been stiffened in recent decades and gun registration has been made compulsory. It says that 816 people 767 males and 49 females died of firearms-related injuries in Canada in 2002, the most recent year examined in the study. This represented 2.6 deaths per 100,000 population, down from 5.9 per 100,000 in 1979, it said.

  15. Axeman said: “Martin is a thief and an unworthy PM, and he and his crew are destroying our country. But I’m not convinced they’re wrong on this one.”
I don’t have the text space here to delineate how very wrong Martin and the feds are (ultra vires) in this issue…it is really not their business constitutionally and they are acting against the will of the majority or AT LEAST WITHOUT A MANDATE on this issue from the public.
SSM is not a right in the same sense that say….freedom of speech is.
Your gut level tells you Martin is a corrupt self serving theif and liar…why is this issue any different?…..it’s not! He’s lying through his teeth as to the NEED for the feds to act and he is acting against the democratic will of the electorate in doing something he has no mandate to do.

  16. Many same-sex marriage supporters on the convservative side of the political spectrum make the case that it’s just not that important an issue to this country, and that it’s time to move on. Well, if it’s not important, why don’t SSM supporters back off, and move on? And if it’s really not important, why is there this rush to ram this divisive piece of social engineering down Canadian’s throats, without their approval?
You have to wonder why SSM proponents don’t simply coin another word that would apply only to SSM. Is it maybe because if they created their own tradition, it would only affect THEM, and not other groups who don’t believe in SSM?
Hmmm. Given that anyone can coin any phrase or word they want to, why wouldn’t gays and lesbians take that option? This couldn’t possibly be be all about self-dramatics, could it?

  17. Barbara,
Have you seen the news items from Britain where hospital personnel are now clamoring to have kitchen knives outlawed because they are being used to kill/injure people? (You can Google it if you think I’m making it up – I’m not!) The old idea that “people kill people” is true. The weapon makes no difference, be it guns, knives, poison, automobiles, rocks, bare hands, or whatever. Your statistics can be used to prove whatever you may like – gun deaths are lower in Canada than the USA, France has more deaths from poison than Italy, Japanese die more often by suffocation than other countries. In the end, one truth remains. People kill people. They may use guns, knives, bombs, ropes, pillows, drugs, airplanes, or anything – but murder is committed by PEOPLE, not inanimate objects.

  18. Joey W,
I would never disagree that people kill people and as such should bear the responsibility for their use. From this it doesn’t follow that we ought not regulate the ownership of guns. Guns should be difficult to buy because they are dangerous, they are too easily used in the heat of the moment on others and oneself. This is not an ideological issue, we have a registry for cars, the very least we should have is one for guns too. Thank God we do – more people are alive because of it.

  20. I have been guilty myself, however not a voice from anywhere suggesting a TREK to Ottawa, say the Labour Day Week-End?, and I don’t want to hear any yelping that “I can’t afford it” with all the money that gambling is taking in(more than energy) and the Lotto’s etc. so there is a buck out there folks. It would be a fantastic experience for Canadians from sea to sea to shining sea to meet each other, and no doubt a chance make some really good new friends. If I, making 1,000 dollars a month, with over 700 dollars of that paying my meager monthly expenses, if I had to I would stiff the landlord for a months rent to help pay for the gas to Ottawa from Parksville, the furtherst west Canada goes, and sleep in the car for a few days which a lot of people are doing anyway “camping”. Why not plan our holidays as a “trip” to Ottawa, and set these thugs in Ottaws straight as to whose country this really is? We can’t depend on the CEO’s to help us they have dropped the ball years ago in their complacency to grab more of the world market, and the Fascist Mafiosa backed Librano’$ have got the MSM and too many ridings sewed up which leaves the Opposition PCP’s with both hands tied behind their back, it is the “PEOPLE ” that are going to have to take the country back if they think it is worth it, or does the beer can, and the coolness of the Lake more appealling? The time to play HARD BALL IS NOW, and the bitching, and whining, and the “poor me’s” is over iF we get off our asses and do what we now HAVE to do to take our country back. If the Ukrains can show the guts they did because they demanded Democracy, then for Christs sake, what is holding US back, and to top it all off it will be an experience of a lifetime that will generate good memories as well as you partook in your way to save our so-called “democracy” what is left of it, that millions of Canadians had to do THEIR way to beat the Nazi German Hitler at his game, now it is time for Canadians to fight this made in Canada “Hitler”, in my opinion, and if it is not worth a TREK to Ottawa, then I suggest to SHUT UP. Or put your money, and your country where your mouth is, and prove to oursleves that we still have some guts left, this is war friends, Mafiosa war.

  21. Barbara you are naive. We register cars, therefore we should register guns. Cars are out on the street or driven every day and chances are will be spotted without registration. Guns on the other hand are hidden away until needed for the crime. CRIMINALS do not register their guns. Why should they.
The only people affected by this registry are farmers who use their guns on their own property. Its just an annoyance and a waste of time and money. Over two billion so far.
To suggest that the registry is saving lives is ludicrous. Most robberies are committed using pistols which have been registered in this country for years and years. Hasn’t accomplished a thing.

  22. Barbara – if there was punishment for crimes, there wouldn’t be a need for a registry, but the liberal bleeding hearts of this country have removed consequences for actions, and taken all responsibility away from the individual.

  23. “What about the teachings of our catholic faith regarding same-sex marriage…”
Uh… yeah… that whole tolerance thing Jesus taught about I guess doesn’t fit, eh?
As a Roman Catholic myself, I believe we should get our own glass house in order before starting to throw bricks at those being habitated by same-sex couples. Maybe then we’ll sound less hypocritical when weighing in on the weighty matters of state…

  24. Barbara,
Are you wearing Smug cologne or am I sniffing an odour that is creeping through my window from a nearby farm? It’s hard to know.
Every time I read comments from persons like you, a small red light starts flashing in the corner of my computer screen. Could it be spyware?
Like the SSM fraud, Barbara reminds me why I want to own a gun!

  25. Barbara:
Need I remind you that it is not a crime under the crimminal code of Canada to not license or register your vehicle while leaving it in your garage, or driving down the street.
The sooner people like yourself quit being so weak minded and actually use your brain to think for yourself rather than let the media and the rest of the leftwing loonie toons, the better off you’ll be.
You are comparing apples and oranges.

  26. rollingyoureyes,
Our house is in order. Pope Jean-Paul and Pope Benedict have been very clear on the teachings of the church. Have you been listening?
You also made a fake reference to Jesus. Convince me that you are a real Catholic. Thus far, you sound like a typical secularist with a shallow understanding of Jesus, his words and his life.
Jesus never said go ahead and sin. He said stop the sin and follow him. And, he never would have rolled his eyes at anyone (even the sinner).

  27. Rollingmyeyes:
Maybe you should actually read the Bible before commenting.
That way at least you look like you had a sniffle at what you are talking about.
For your info, Christ was God in flesh who came down to earth.
What God did to Sodom and Gommorah, is what Christ did to S & G !!

  28. A word about this gun business, if I may.
Anti-gun criticism means nothing unless there is also a study to demonstrate how many people each year are saved by gun ownership.
In other words, how many people saved themselves or the lives of loved ones or strangers by self-defense with a gun?
In the US we found that at least as many are saved by their capacity for armed self defense, and probably more. Our media along with anti-gun organizations had the mendacity to keep an account of numbers harmed by guns, but no, I repeat no, record of how many were helped.
We’ve discovered that when concealed permit laws are enacted, violent crime goes down. This is why Democrats no longer try to use this as an issue.
They came out with an alarming number of young people who were shot with guns. Then it was discovered that most of this statistic was made up of teenage gang members shot in drug transactions.
So the real question is whether there is a large statistical divergence between the ones who are helped (who stopped crimes with a gun) and the ones who are harmed.

  29. Yikes, maybe we have a new leader for the Alberta separatist party, via Monte after the vote:
“The new Canada. You can have it.”
That would really get things moving. I just happened to email him and mention it. Must have been on his mind…. cool…

  30. Greg – The left will never look at both sides of the issue, they’ll only look at the side that suits there needs. SSM and the gun registry are both good examples of this. The truth is twisted and distorted to create legitimacy, when the masses oppose it. That’s not democracy…. period.

  31. “The aim is to cut red tape and deploy soldiers and supplies quickly across the country when they are needed.”
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/cdnmilitary/index.html
Expecting an uprising over SSM and other issues maybe….. It took them 3 weeks to get to Sri Lanka, maybe we should “quickly” as well. Call parliment back dammit.
By the time they showed up it would be over anyway…

  32. You guys are loony wingnuts. The content on this comments thread is an excellent analytic lesson why the current CPC will never win. I, and by far most Canadians, are happy about this state of affairs.

  33. nonce – ” I, and by far most Canadians”
Notice how your in the minority… with nothing of any substance to say….. LLL

  34. Nonce,
The polls show that over 50 percent of Quebecers plan to vote for the Bloc Quebecois. 60 per cent of French-speaking Quebecers voted in 1995 to leave Canada. The polls are showing further gains, aided by recent immigrants.
Celebrate and insult at your peril. Canada’s destiny has changed!

  35. Barbara – it’s already illegal to shoot people and has been for rather a long time. Yet, for reasons unbenownst to law enforcement, people continue to shoot other people.
If the penalties for shooting people aren’t enough to dissuade someone, then the fact that the firearm is or isn’t registered isn’t likely to give much pause.

  36. Thank goodness Stephen Harper has pledged to keep this fight going. This will be the rallying issue for the CPC and it will earn it broad support in Ontario (except in Toronto, of course), probably enough to form the next government.
The CBC’s pollsters are lying – a majority of Canadians are firmly against Homosexual Marriage, and for good reason. Ordinary people do not want to raise their children in an environment that promotes homosexual coupling as an equally valid option to heterosexuality. Western civilization as we know it simply would not exist without the absolute primacy of heterosexual monogamy, and the strict discouragement of homosexuality, over the past two millenia. Statistically, it takes only a tiny reduction in the number of reproducing adults in a population to cause massive demographic repercussions.

  37. Barbara: It is never best to accept politicized “stats” at face value. You will note that the so called downward trend in the gun related deaths in this narrow age group study was a trend that started in 1979….6 years before the registry passed and continued despite the fact the gun registry is neither fully implemented, enforced nor complied with at this moment.
Those who care about the validity of conclusions drawn from narrow data sets would call this latest Stats Can offering “policy bait” as it leaves the end user to imagine what has caused the downward trending in this narrow study group. There are things like over all decline in the population in that age group and trends to other weapons of choice that are never offered as trending triggers…by itself this stat is meaningless without discussing the impacting issues on the data set.
Nonce: thankyou for amply demonstrating the intolerance of dissent and heard animal conformist thinking of the statist left that has degenerated Canadian democracy to it’s current low ebb.

  38. Nonce you are happy to be led by thieves, and criminals.
Whew. This is one pathetic country.

  39. I was going to state what WL Mackenzie did about Stats Canada but he/she beat me to it and much better! Gun related deaths had been dropping steadily for several years prior to full registration but Barbara ignored that.
Just paying attention to the news I am sure that many have noticed how many gun deaths there have been in Canada the past 18 months – this year is shaping up to be a banner year. We will not be able to access these stats until 2006/2007, long after Barbara has forgotten what she has written.
I agree, if someone wants to hurt/kill someone they are going to do it one method or another. It does seem that most of the people who are capable of doing it already have an illegal weapon or no problem finding one, the registration is a joke and a public drain of our money.
Yes, I noticed that the CBC told a blatant lie about the majority supporting SSM, they are incapable of telling the truth. I really hope the Tories dismantle them first when in power.
Nonce, I really hope that you are employed at the CBC or some other such useless government waste of tax dollars and are cleaned out soon. Now go put your head back up your ass and continue to sleep on it.
