Mark Steyn Interview

Right Wing News interviews the incomparable Mark Steyn. Via email, it covers “a number of topics including Steyn’s syndication in the US, Israel, the future of Europe and Nato, Christianity in Europe, Iraq, illegal immigration, and the American left’s view of foreign policy.”
All that and yours truly’s “sharp headlines, one-line squibs, and nifty asides”.
After spending three hours working in the rain getting ready for this trip, that certainly brightened my day.

  1. I saw Mark Steyn mention you. Wow, what a compliment. He is one of my favorite writers.
I didn’t know that there was another female Saskatoon blogger besides that Marxist “progressive” Cathie.
However after looking at your sidebar and seeing Katewerk, I think I emailed you once (it was a compliment) to tell you I enjoyed the stories about your motorcycle trips. Do you still live in D or do you now live in Saskatoon?

  2. Yup, still here. And if it would ever stop raining, I might just get a chance to update the diaries…. grrrr..

  3. Kudos to you, Kate. The work you do here is first class.
I agree with Mark’s assessment of the newspaper industry in Canada. And he’s right, it would behoove the StarPhoenix to pick up a writer of your skill and style. I think Randy Burton does an admirable job, though, considering he’s the only right-winger columnist they have.
But I don’t think they’d know what to do with two common-sense columnists not sucking up to the Liberal government! I’d love to see it, though.

  4. How’s the rain affecting the farmers? Too much perhaps? Hope not.
And yes, a very, very nice mention to you Kate. Seven line. Wow.
As for Steyn, I’d buy a two page daily and have it delivered to my door if he wrote it all. And I NEVER read dailies anymore.

  5. Good for you, Kate!
You, Steyn and the Shotgun are my daily fix.
    Good things come in threes!

  6. Well deserved praise to Madam Kate and bloggers who love her. Don’t even bother with the MSM any more. Even my National Post is becoming a tad too PMPM kissy face, though I was glad that they did blow a raspberry to Sasha Trudeau and like-minded terrorist sympathisers in today’s issue. Is there no end to the stupidity of the left? How long must we suffer Trudeau Sr’s legacy? It’s more like a prolonged, excruciating death – by taxation and left wing ideology.

  7. David Frum’s site is also good, though nowhere near as wicked and funny as Steyn’s.
    http://frum.nationalreview.com/
After all Frum did work in the White House and has to keep up certain standards–no sane politician would dare employ Steyn who, I think, most resembles P.J. O’Rourke.
A must read is Frum’s article in the National Post, June 28, “Canada’s Unhappy Birthday”:

  8. The David Frum article is quite good. Chilling. And a tad depressing.
Anyone else having a hard time getting excited about Canada Day? I’m not sure I can even manage a small whoop whoop this year.

  9. Congratulations for getting praise from none other than Mark Steyn!
Here in London, I’m GENUINELY disappointed when I pick up The Daily Telegraph at the Tube in the morning and there’s no Steyn column that day.
Every week, it’s a toss-up whether I’ll even buy The Spectator when there’s no Steyn column – even if it’s just a movie review.

  10. I was living in Vancouver when the planes hit the WTC, and I was becoming increasingly disturbed by the range and ignorance of anti-American sentiments, and by the excuses being made for the terrorist’s actions.
I was in a line-up at the Vancouver International Film Festival when someone said that anthrax had been sent through the mail in the USA. Everyone assumed at the time that it was an Al-Qaeda action, so there was a certain amount of diffuse leftist merriment buzzing through the crowd. A young woman with whom I had been chatting pleasantly giggled a bit at the news, then said guiltily, “well, it IS kind of clever, don’t you think…”
Living among those sort of leftists is not good for your well-being, but later, when I was waiting outside another theatre, full of coffee and sweat and unpleasantness, I came across Mark Steyn’s column in the National post, the one in which he explored to great effect the circular idiocy of the “terrorism is caused by” apologists, and I felt something akin to physical relief. I don’t think I have ever been so affected by by a newspaper column — suddenly, the world wasn’t completely insane. At that moment I became a lifelong Steyn fan.
No one came close to matching his insight, clarity and humour in those heady days, and he remains a superstar for those of us who oppose statist group-think. His mix of insight and entertainment is always a delight — I’m guessing he’s somehow related to Mark Twain.
Kate, you should be very proud of Mr. Steyn’s ringing endorsement. Your readers certainly are. You are on the receiving end of the journalistic equivalent of a heads-up pass from Wayne Gretzky. Congratulations, Kate.
Your fans are on their feet! Go! Go! GO!

  11. Wow Kate!
When starting off on a long drive across the Prairies, I couldn’t think of a better thing to feed my “day dreamer” with, than praise from Mark Steyn.
In my long road to recovery from being a CBC – aholic. His words have been the best tonic.
I think of him as the “prophet”. Most of his predictions about world affairs have come to pass.
He appears to have given up on Canada though, which is a bit sad for those of us that are still continuing the fight.
To Spooky and others that are still hanging onto PET’s insipid Truedopian slogan.
    Happy Dominion Day!

  12. Congrats Kate, it is well deserved recognition .
On another point , I will be celebrating on Friday , but only because it is my wife’s birthday.
Canada as a functioning democracy ended a while ago. What now exists doesn’t deserve any commemoration .
I used to proudly fly the Maple Leaf outside my Wisconsin home alongside of Old Glory . But not anymore, it is packed away out of sheer embarassment and shame. I just can’t get the nerve to burn it.
May my dear departed WW2 vet father forgive me.

  13. The Steyn interview is why I am here. I have never read your blog in the past but have already added you to my favorites list. Anyone Steyn recommends must be a daily read.

  14. EBD – it’s not the ENTIRE city of Van that’s screamingly, stupidly, leftily, dumb. Just most of it. I live there too, and spent the days post 911, and the time around the Iraq invasion, walking the streets, walking up to every “demonstrator” (No Blood For Oil!!!) and just telling them – “You’re wrong.” That’s it. Not gonna change their minds, but they need to be told.
Kate – nice shout out from Steyn. Why weren’t you writing this stuff when I lived in Flatland? Hadn’t Al Gore invented the Internet yet?

  15. Kate,
Those of us who have had the privilege of reading your work and commenting on your Blog are truly proud that another professional such as the world renowned Mark Steyn has recognized you.The vision and education you have provided to people with access to the Internet has been outstanding.
Just remember, no matter how far you go, you will always be our Kate.

  16. I remember very well first showing up at this delightful blog. Its title is “smalldead animals”, of all things, and I found it to be irresistable. It is now indispensible.
Canada is truly blessed to receive the selfless efforts of a strongly forthright, amazingly sensible and wonderfully talented writer/organizer who remains undeterred by the sordid state of the political environment and is, even, somewhat optimistic. She’s also quite lovely. I hope it all lasts for as long as it’s needed, which is always.

  17. That’s high praise indeed, kate (and well deserved!).
Many thanks for your excellent website.

  18. Katie:
I told you I loved you a long time ago LOL, but have to add my “rose” to this latest well deserved “bouquet” that you have earned, God love ya lass, you and your blog, as I said before are a God-send for our voices, previously stymied and muzzled by the extreme bias of the MSM rats all these many years. You brought back hope to this ole ww 2 vet that there is a God after all. Hugs and Kisses:
    Stephen ww 2 vet.

  19. For the record here is what Canada’s most brilliant political writer had to say about Kate.
“Going back to my earlier point about the dullness of many newspaper comment pages, look at, say, Saskatchewan: its got a yawnsville newspaper – The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix and one of the sharpest bloggers on the planet, Kate McMillan. I don’t know Miss McMillan, never met her, doubt I ever will, but she’s a thousand times pithier and more insightful than the fellows holding down the columnar real estate at the Star-Phoenix. Someone should snap her up just for the sharpness of her headlines, one-line squibs, and nifty asides.”
    Kate,
Mark’s praise is richly deserved. You are entirely too modest and now that Andrew has taken a break (or whatever) you are invariably the first must read of the day. If the Globe would fire terrorist supporter Mallick, know nothing Saunders and Mr. Politically Correct Simpson and replace them with you (and pay you their aggregate salaries) I would subscribe to that godforsaken paper.

  20. Congrats on the Steyn shoutout. Wish you’d send that rain to me in Illinois. We’ve had an inch since April-worst drought in my lifetime. Hopefully, I’ll be heading your way the middle of July on the way to visit amigos in PA and Toontown.

  21. Much deserved, Kate. You are an inspiration to women who truly think everywhere. God bless.

  22. Yo Kate!
    Stumbled over here from Powerline….
If Mark Steyn recommends your site, then you just became a “Must Read”…
Greetings from a “Red State, USA”
Hurry back so I can read what I’ve been missing!
    Best,
    Clay in Virginia

  23. Hi, Mark Steyn sent me. As soon as I saw “Dominion Day” I saved you in my Bookmarks folder 🙂
