Go For The Bronze

Monte Solberg responds to Adam Radwanski’s Post column;

Adam, your point seems to be stylistic. You seem to be saying that it was politically unwise of me to say anythings critical of “the new Canada”, and that patriotism has a long history of getting people elected, and when will conservatives figure this out. Fair enough. I concede that waving the flag is a good strategy, but it’s also dangerous when you truly are concerned for the future of the country.
The problem with liberalism today is that it’s all about strategy, and politics, and doing whatever it takes to get elected. But sometimes doing what it takes to get elected is so completely at odds with I think is right for the country that I would rather dive head first into a wood chipper than pretend that I’m okay with how things are. Somebody once pointed out that the opposite of love isn’t hate it’s indifference, and it’s true. Adam, me and my fellow conservatives are not indifferent to Canada. We think Canada can be so much better than it is today.

  1. Radwanski’s column epitomizes liberal smugness. They take for granted, that their values are the only ones that a decent Canadian ever could hold.

  2. Yes. The Liberals have messed up severely, but good things can come from this messing with Federal Revenues.
This provides for the incentive to get revenue protection safeguards in place.
Whistle-Blower bill C-11 is well underway. Check TheHillTimes.ca July 4-05 or BendGovt.blog.ca Several MPs declare they are very happy about it. *Most important bill*, or words to that effect.
Also, when the individual Ministry by Ministry accounting and audit initiative comes along,[ as promised in CSL Martin’s grovel TV speech], there will be very little room for skulldugery with public funds.
These measures work to protect our money regardless of the political party in power.
So out of the mess there can be a few good results. Since Bill C-38 the SSM legislation was enacted while the Liberals were holding power through vote-buying, there is nothing permanant about it.
The Gomery report will provide part of the recipie for the clean-up that will certainly take place after the next election.
The sooner the better. 73s TG

  3. If you want to see who is attacking some Canadians: a message sent today to the inimitable Ibbitson (a PC liberal–nice juxtaposition that–if ever there was one) of the Globe:
    ‘Dear Mr Ibbitson,
I truly wonder why you persist in insulting Alberta (along with the West and rural Canada generally). In your article “King Ralph’s time has come” (July 14) you write “The truth is that Alberta is still politically immature.” You imply that large scale immigration, from abroad and elsewhere in Canada, is required to reduce that immaturity. But then surely Atlantic Canada must be much more immature as there is almost no immigration to that area.
You further maintain that the “homogeneity” of Alberta’s culture–a sign of its political immaturity–is indicated by the long rules of first Social Credit, and then the Conservatives. What then of the maturity of Canada as a whole where Liberals have provided the federal government for some 80% of the past century?
And you compare Quebec’s political behaviour favourably to Alberta’s. Perhaps Alberta will only reach political maturity in your eyes if a separatist party in Alberta succeeds in getting wide electoral support, and indeed forms a government: and all other provincial parties adhere to a belief in the Albertan “nation”.

  4. 73s TG, re: Librano corruption creating opportunities to usher in improvements. Surely you are being sarcastic here? At least I hope so..
And of course you should realize that trusting the Libranos to clean up their own mess, would be akin to me expecting my dog to clean up the mess he leaves in my back yard. It ain’t gonna happen!

  5. Is Adam Radwansky any relation to George Radwansky, (who has moved back to Ottawa after being fired as ‘Ethics Commissar’?

  6. First, Adam R is an editorial writer at NP. Not a Liberal at all, but likely a liberal Conservative.
Second, what Adam and others (incl Warren Kinsella, no less) have suggested is that the Conservatives must become much more positive and optimistic. Instead of, or in addition to, exposing Liberal corruption and other Liberal weaknesses, CPC must also present their own positive and constructive vision of Canada’s future.
Today, it’s not that out of line to characterize CPC as a bunch of complainers, with no coherent policy in any area except in their opposition to SSM. (The rest of the CPC policies seem very similar to the Liberals’.)
Not a way to win an election, not a way to make Canada an even better place to live!

  7. Ode to Johan:
Oh, what a beautiful day. I was walking along the river road, drinking milk and winking ‘howdy-do’ to all the passing cars.
I spotted a patch of daisies, stopped, smiled and then returned to the road.
As I walked passed the home of my neighbors, I was struck by a feeling of pride.
It’s Mr Canada Post. I waved, then waited as he gingerly placed a precious copy of my latest statement from the government into my mailbox.
Suddenly, I felt fear. You silly billy, I said to myself, what have you to fear? That’s right, I answered right back. How could I possibly be glum when Pollyanna is my chum.

  8. I like Monte a lot, and Canada is fortunate to have him as a politician. However, I’ve got to agree with Joe Canuck.
The problem isn’t just socialism gone wild, it is entrenched corruption at the highest levels. A huge amount of money is a stake. If it were possible for political pressure to counter a lot of problems, it is probable that the Librano$ would simply switch to game plan 2.
I apologize for sounding like a broken record, but when Gagliano was made public works minister, what was revealed was no more important than what the appointment signified. It meant that those in political power no longer felt that they would be damaged politically by the installation of a made member of La Cosa Nostra.
Likewise, when a complete political opportunist like Belinda crossed the aisle, flying in the face of everything she had established about herself, turning on every political friend and ally, you know some unknown element behind the scenes was brokering a deal. And I don’t mean a simple Cabinet post that puts her in obvious disrespect.
There are sinister forces in Canada manipulating public perception and pacifying public opinion by socialism, for their own dark agenda.

  9. The fact that none of the MSM are at all interested in this court case in Seattle involving Librano$ campaign workers and gobs of cash, cocaine and pot, plus outright confirmation that there are cops also on the take, well, you know it’s time to throw in the towel. If CBC’s Terry Milewski can hound Grewal while completely ignoring Dosanjh’s fundraising, it’s pretty much over. Luckily, Canadians are basking in summer weather, or trying to salvage what remains of their homes, to bother about the media. But I’m going cancel my NP subscription if I see one more anti-Tory, pro-Librano piece. I’ve still got toast stuck in my craw after reading this morning’s Ode to Adrienne Clarkson by some washed up Asper groupie called Geiger. It truly is to weep.
Where the hell is Andrew Coyne when we need him?

  10. We need more Montes and way less Stronachs, Pettigrews and McLellans.
What we really need is a miracle, but I’d settle for an election (which, given the current state of affairs, would almost constitute a miracle).

  11. Dear Adam
After reading your column (cross posted from another site) I have to wonder if Adam Radwanski doesn’t hate Canada.
You seem to ascribe to Federalist Liberal policies without the concern of facts getting in the way.
So my question to you Mr. Radwanski is this: If you and your Liberal freinds love Canada so much, why do you find it neccessary to ignore its history, dismantle its institutions, restrict it peoples freedoms and support the wholesale restructuring of its values and social mores.
Conservatives don’t hate Canada, Adam, they truly love it. It was once a great nation. It breaks their hearts to see it being flushed down the toilet by a corrupt Liberal establishment while being cheered on by a supportive left leaning media.
Because of Liberal identity politics, Liberal intolerance for any opinion that does not match their own, and a willingess to abandon tradition and honor in favour of the retention of power and the projection of an ever leftward moving ideaology, Canada stands on the cusp of becoming this centuries Argentina.
It won’t happen overnight, but once past the point of no return Canada will not be able to be rebuilt into the nation it once was. Tories would prefer to develop policies that would stop the slide, or not advance those that would accelerate it.
To me its pathetic that you spend your energies trying to discredit the Conservatives on minor issues while letting the Liberals walk freely on criminal issues. It says to me that you lack the objectivity that should be the foundation of your profession.
As the old saying goes, if its good for the goose its good for the gander. It seems all you know how do is play favorites.
The Liberals have proved to be ver successful in buying off those that would keep them in power. Are you simply wilfully naive, Adam, or did you have a price?
    Ward Benedict

  12. Radwanski’s column “Do Conservatives Dislike Canada” epitomizes the Liberal/Southern Ontario attitude towards Conservatives and the west: If you notice the corruption of our institutions under the Liberals, and you’re not happy about it, that means that you don’t like Canada.
Well,in fact, Southern Ontario is a different country with it’s own culture, a culture which is completely comfortable with corruption. The fact that Westerners don’t like it doesn’t make us less Canadian, just less Liberal. When Liberals talk about “Canada”, they are just referring to a Liberal brand-name that was christened with a gallic shrug and then promoted as a nation. But their vision is not of a whole country; such systematic corruption of institutions as they have overseen creates only a temporary, self-serving nation, one that invites only jingoistic, false patriotism.
The Liberal’s current ownership of the word “Canada” will eventually come to grief, like all fraudulent transactions, and it will not be a nation that is lost, just one party’s propaganda centerpiece.

  13. Guys (incl Anselm),
The issue here is NOT whether or not the Liberals are currupt (which they are) or whether the Liberals’ policies are any good for Canada (which they are not).
The issue is the CPC and its inability to get any traction in this rather unique situation. My opinion is that CPC needs to present a positive vision for the future, with concrete proposals, and with integrity, instead of constantly whining about the Liberals.
If the MSM also is corrupt, then it is up to CPC (and us potential supporters) to reveal the facts, and do it outside of the blogosphere (which is only read by the already converted).
If you guys (and I) were to spend as much time and effort “on the street”, as you do reading & writing in places like this one, then something might actually happen.
    Regards,
    /Johan

  14. Town hall meetings all summer, with a list of public accounts recipients who are sustained by tax dollars is what is needed. The MSM will never, EVER, work with the CPC, with the exception of Sun Media. Stephen Harper will have to swallow his bile for the media (copious amounts of Pepto Bismal taken hourly over the course of the next 9 months should work), particularly small town, local papers that feel really privileged to score interviews with politicians. You wouldn’t believe the hoopla here because PM is attending Cadman’s funeral. Probably wants to press the flesh to make sure Surrey doesn’t revert to CPC. Is it rude to hurl abuse (or just hurl)at the PM when he’s attending a funeral?

  15. U.S. federal appeals court overturns ban on imports of Canadian cattle
WASHINGTON (CP) – In a victory for Canadian producers, a federal appeals court Thursday overturned the ban on cattle, throwing out a lower court’s ruling that imports could spread mad cow disease in the United States
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
CP, aka Canadian Press, aka Librano$$$$ Press says it’s a victory: was there a fight? a war? a hockey game? What victory? Why this triumphalism? More BS from the Liberals. If there is a resolution to this it was due to the Conservative members, including Cheryl Gallant, who pushed for this. George Bush, POTUS, also must have had a hand in this settlement.
Thank you Conservative Party and George Bush.

  16. This provides for the incentive to get revenue protection safeguards in place … These measures work to protect our money regardless of the political party in power.
I doubt it. We already had a big, thick book of procedures and safeguards that were allegedly protecting the public purse, including the biggest and scariest safeguard ever, called the Criminal Code. What are you going to do – print the new rules in BIG BOLD LETTERS so that this time they know that you really, really mean business?
So you can dream away about checks and balances. No amount of procedures will ensure that socialist wealth redistribution schemes will work honestly, because the programs themselves are dishonest and despicable in their assumptions that (a) rich people acquired their wealth unfairly; (b) poor people are too stupid to improve their own lives; and (c) politicians and bureaucrats are some kind of superhumans whose intelligence and generosity (plus lots of really well designed oversight procedures!) will somehow ensure that a gargantuan and ravenous government runs like a well-oiled machine.
Come to think of it, “oily” is not a bad way to describe it.
The only people who can be trusted not to steal money are the people who earned the money in the first place. Unless you’re really convinced that the average person is completely dishonest, stupid, greedy and shortsighted. In which case you might as well give all the money to the dishonest, stupid, greedy and shortsighted people in government.

Sadly, liberals have shown themselves at their least liberal when it comes to speech, the very means of intellectual expression and debate you’d think a liberal would cherish. For example, over the past twenty years, liberal American universities have adopted stiflingly restrictive speech codes in the name of multiculturalism and tolerance and generally shown themselves to be incapable of abiding departures from the prevailing liberal orthodoxy. Hence, Duke University recently shut down a faculty member’s web site because the guy dared to support taking powerful military action against terrorism.
Meanwhile, feminist liberals blow a gender-neutral gasket when you suggest a look back at history to inform a discussion. For one thing, they insist on calling the past herstory, which inevitably holds up the debate while everyone stops to giggle. When talking resumes, feminist liberals label any appeals to the wisdom of dead white males misogyny (just because the people happen to be pale, male, and dead folk) and start objecting to terms such as seminal as being phallocentric, which just makes everyone uncomfortable. But more seriously, liberal feminists pride themselves on their efforts to silence dissenting opinions……
