CTV is usually trumpeting its fall lineup for the new season of The Sopranos, which is apparently going to run another few seasons. CTV has run it on Sunday nights for the past few years, usually a series or two behind HBO. This year – NADA. Don’t suppose it’s too close to the Librano$ for BellGlobemedia, do you? I know this isn’t the deep and meaningful stuff Kate had in mind, but hey, it’s Friday, hot, sunny, and my brain has turned to mush. Probably all the fumes from the meth labs here in Kitsilano. So bad lately, they’re blowing manhole covers off the roads. No joke. The heads have been dumping the chemicals into drains to avoid being busted, now the stuff is getting into the sewage system and exploding underground. Oh Canada!
An excellent column in the Washington Post, August 12, “Setting Limits on Tolerance”, Charles Krauthammer:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/11/AR2005081101757.html
Excerpt:
‘Call it situational libertarianism: Liberties should be as unlimited as possible — unless and until there arises a real threat to the open society. Neo-Nazis are pathetic losers. Why curtail civil liberties to stop them? But when a real threat — such as jihadism — arises, a liberal democratic society must deploy every resource, including the repressive powers of the state, to deter and defeat those who would abolish liberal democracy.
Civil libertarians go crazy when you make this argument. Beware the slippery slope, they warn. You start with a snoop in a library, and you end up with Big Brother in your living room…’
Remember that during WW II civil liberties were severely curtailed in the UK (esp. “Defence of the Realm Act” [DORA], 1940), including the internment of German and Italian refugees in Britain–sadly many Jews among the Germans.
Yet after the war civil liberties were fully restored and moved forward.
Not that one is advocating anything like DORA now.

Mrs Thatcher, Now that is interesting. Poppings under what streets? Fourth and Alma? Broadway and Burrard?
You have to wonder at the numbers of young people who pay for a poison to consume before they learn how to enjoy life.
Seems like union protected teachers in Canada were never inspired and can’t communicate. Can’t teach in other words.
Otherwise, how can you explain the vast numbers of lost Canadian youth who make up the profitable drug market? 73s TG
This new Crystal Meth legislation may be the first actual work the Libs have done this year that may actually have some effect on quality of life. When we were kids we smoked a bit of pot and maybe stole a bag of chips, no lives were destroyed. Pot was not addictive and only a few sad cases moved to harded drugs. Crystal Meth has changed everything about teenage recreational drug use. This is the introduction to drugs for kids now – a really cheap and really addicitive and destructive substance.
In Alberta we also have a new law that allows parents to put their kids in treatment (only for 5 days – but it’s a start) for drug addiction without their consent. Of course the human rights advocates are saying this is a bad law. But really – if a parents has the choice between getting their kid help and watching him destroy himself is their really a choice. Great step forward here I think.
Lets hope the war on this drug sees some successes.

The poppings were in Point Grey, but the manhole cover that blew off was in Surrey, I think it was, an area known for its meth production. This legislation is more appeasement than anything. We have Honduran refugee claimants in the Downtown East Side who are openly dealing crack and meth, and some have been busted 13 times, even twice in one day. They book them then let them out again. And they haven’t been deported. Their claims are still in the courts. The meth heads around here (Alma & 5th for Tony)have each spent several tours of duty – max 6 months – for their crack/meth dealings, only to come back out and start all over again. All the little businesses around here have been victimized. The local butcher has had to lock up his frozen meat section because they come dashing in, grab a handful of steaks and rush down to the local deals and trade filet mignon for a rock. Oh Canada!
Terrible downtown Seymour/Dumsmuir . . . crackheads taking dumps in the allies, peeing on the sidewalks . . . I won’t walk with a wallet in my back pocket. They get too close at red lights and its not safe. The saving grace is most of them have terrible body odour and you know when they are close.
They are violent, need to be locked up in special hospitals for treatment.
Don’t make eye contact with the wild ones . . I have seen them go ballistic on people who wouldn’t give them money.
Police must be soooooo frustrated. Arrest the same losers time & again and the courts just slap em on the wrist and there back on the streets in
Didn’t expect to have a Mrs Thatcher for a neighbour.
Haven’t seen any explosions from the Burrard end of Kits but the air is always heavy with Vancouver Vapour.
If the manhole problem gets worse perhaps we could report it to The Weather Network. It could be added to their Pollen Forecast and the UV Index.
Cal, I’m surprised you didn’t know. Mrs. Thatcher lives in the nice house with tin foil over all the windows.
FOUND! PHOTOS OF CINDY SHEEHAN MEETING PRESIDENT BUSH

The photo Cindy Sheehan did not want the world to see: President Bush plants a consoling kiss on the cheek of grieving antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan last year at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Mrs. Sheehan is staging a protest vigil in Crawford, Texas demanding a second meeting with President Bush to demand an explanation for why her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed in Iraq a year ago April.
The photo of the president consoling Mrs. Sheehan, and a companion photo from the meeting, used to be hosted on Mrs. Sheehan’s tribute site to her son. The site, called Casey’s Peace Page also contains information about Mrs. Sheehan’s antiwar and anti-Bush activities.
However, the photos were removed some time ago, but the hosting page and captions were left there until this week when they were removed along with a copy of the now-controversial Vacaville Reporter article, after that article which contradicts Mrs. Sheehan’s current account of her meeting with the president was publicized by the Drudge Report.

RCMP will not launch criminal investigation into Grewal tapes

RCMP will not launch criminal investigation into Grewal tapes
OTTAWA (CP) – The RCMP will not launch a criminal investigation into the Germant Grewal affair.
The Mounties say they have reviewed complaints of criminal wrongdoing with respect to audio recordings the Conservative member of Parliament made of conversations with Liberal officials last spring.
The RCMP say they listened to the tapes and interviewed the principals involved and determined no criminal investigation is warranted.
Grewal claimed that Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh and Tim Murphy, Martin’s chief of staff, had offered him and his wife Nina, also an MP, patronage positions if they joined the Liberals just before an important budget vote May 19.
Grewal made headlines again in June when he was spotted at a Vancouver airport trying to get someone to take an envelope full of audio tapes to Ottawa. He later went on stress leave.
 The Canadian Press, 2005
Nope, nothing happening here , nope no ministers of crown trying to buy votes.
” the guy on the tape was Wujahl Mosangh not Ujahl Dosangh”
Move along now
Ok, so we learn after weeks of intense study what the RCMP will not do.
Now, based upon hard evidence in the public domain, when will the RCMP lay charges against Murphy and Dosanjh?
The tapes are declared genuine and admissable as evidence by an expert. Remember?
Waiting, shelving and postponing are such effective tools for Libranos survival.
I sure am looking forward to September. Watch the sparks fly. 73s TG
Of course Grewal is innocent!
Apparently, since the RCMP investigated the original tapes themselves, and found no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing (meaning, obviously, that the tapes were not fake, not doctored, etc., which is what would have been evidence of criminal wrongdoing, right?). Boy, do all those “experts”, as part of the Vast, Left-Wing Conspiracy, have egg on their faces and crow feathers stuck between their teeth, with humble pie crust crumbs sprinkled all over their t-shirts!
This means the tapes are the SMOKING GUN! What else could it possibly mean? Everyone, think carefully. THIS IS PAUL MARTIN’S WATERGATE!
Betcha the MSM won’t see it the way it is. Just watch them.
Let’s talk about this.
We all knew that Grewal was innocent – inept, but innocent. And inept is good in the case of emulating the Librano$ or even trying to beat them at their own game. Point made, but my Sprint homepage runs CBC news and they’re leading with it. No mea culpa or anything like that. All this hypocrisy from MSM over Peter Jennings and what a great reporter/anchor he was, could you imagine Jennings ever leading a newscast with “Is Stephen Harper Scary?” No wonder he left Canada. Woe,Canada!
Maybe I am reading this wrong, I read it as NO criminal investigation at all, not Grewal, not Dosanjh, not Murphy???

How could anyone think doubleing the penalty for meth makeing or use will be any differant than it is now. How many pushers get anything close to what they should for destroying peoples lives.
This is just another smoke screen by the Liberals to get votes in the next election.
Shame on them and shame on anyone who will give their vote to this bunch of poltroons who have no respect for our hard earned tax dollars.

U.S. border posse sets sights on 49th parallel

VANCOUVER — They are coming with night-vision goggles, cellphones and possibly guns. They plan to unfold their lawn chairs within spitting distance of the Canada-U.S. border on Oct. 1. Then they will just wait and watch for the stream of illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and terrorists they are certain they will see stepping across the line.
An army of American volunteers concerned about what they perceive as the wide-open border have decided to take national security into their own hands.
After a highly successful operation in Arizona last April, the so-called Minuteman Project has turned its attention to the northern border. While continuing to expand in states along the Mexican border, the group is organizing volunteers in 11 northern border states and is currently looking for recruits in eight Canadian provinces, spokesperson Connie Hair said yesterday in an interview from the organization’s headquarters in Arizona.
In preparation for the October operation, the Minuteman Project has planned a four-day recruitment drive and training session for Michigan and Ontario, beginning Aug. 24>>>

Oh joy! A new Liberal scandal that has legs right into the fall. CBC is referring to the FLQ as extremists, not terrorists,of course. Watch the PQ and BQ members come forward with evidence. But will Bwana Pauly admit it was a mistake, that really, he was just trying to buy votes in Quebec and didn’t know a damn thing about this woman. He apparently hired her on the recommendation of some PMO types. Maybe they’re closet Cretinites. Woe, Canada.

Not since Abu Greyb has any human bean come up with such a dastardly form of cruel and unusual punishment, Mark of Ottawa! Where are your Canadian values? Where are your two solitudes? Or was it three? Hmmm no that was part of coast to coast to coast.
Stephen Harper himself (from your link!) quoting PaulM said “”He told me that they were federalits in the past, are federalits now.” How clever is that? Non sexist you see. Federal ITS. What economy of verbiage. No cumbersone circumlocution from Mr Martin no sirree. He describes both Mr and Mrs Michaelle Jean (don’t know how to do the 2 dots as I’m thick as pig poo) in ONE WORD.
Michaelle might want to go back to the CBC after being GG. That wouldn’t work if she made a declaration as per your suggestion. She’d be done for life in any government capacity. There are laws against preventing people from getting jobs.
Harrumph.
Answer to Cindy Sheean: http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/
Mr. Grewall is not out of the woods yet. He is still being investigated for fraudulent campaign solicitation. He may have more difficulty explaining why campaign donation cheques were made out in his name and cashed by him personally.
No, Joe, YOU have to explain how YOU can call a cheque made out to him personally a campaign donation.
People are such suckers. The top-breaking story at Neal caught my eye: “RCMP: Grewal did not break the law taping top Liberal”.
Well, yes, it’s not against the law. So now, months later, the RCMP announces that. So what was he under investigation for?
THe CBC site’s headline: “No criminal probe over Grewal tapes, RCMP say”. The article begins “The RCMP have decided not to launch a criminal investigation after reviewing (tapes) made by Conservative MP Gurmant Grewal, who accused the Liberals of trying to buy his vote…”
Read the rest of the article, and you will notice that there isn’t one single reference to what, and who, was being investigated. Isn’t that odd? TO announce an investigation being called off, without mentioning what the investigation pertained to?
I always thought that government journalists were just mediocre and lazy but this kind of thing, when I read this kind of statespeak it is absolutely eerie.
RCMP, puleeeze, Grewal is not a priority. Go after the dealers, the big cheeses.
Lay charges against PM Martin and J. Chretien.
You have the iron-clad evidence of hundreds of millions skimmed, laundered and delivered under the table to Liberal operatives.
You have expert approved taped evidence of vote buying during a time of non-confidence in the Liberal government.
As one clear thinking Alberta beef farmer put it, *When can we expect to see charges laid?* Hello? RCMP…. Hello? 73s TG
It’s no big deal at this point that the RCMP have decided not to initiate a criminal probe over the Murphy/Dosanjh tapes — no one thought they would anyway.
But why on earth is Neale News trumpeting “RCMP: GREWAL DID NOT BREAK THE LAW IN TAPING TOP LIBERAL”?
I am really, really confused. Was Grewal potentially under criminal investigation for using a tape-recorder?
What, exactly, were the RCMP investigating regarding the taped conversations? Why can’t the Canadian public know? Are the details of investigations always worked out in camera between the Liberals, the media and the RCMP, or does it just seem that way?

THOSE are the questions we must keep asking and discussing.
For the moment, I’ll say this: the RCMP may not even have been doing anything at all. What exactly they said yesterday is quite broad. They say not as to whom or what they have decided not to investigate, other than to say the obvious that Grewal himself had committed no crime. It’s certainly possible that they were sitting on the thing for a while to see how much it could damage the Conservatives and help the Liberals. After awhile of no media nonsense, they decided to put the thing to a rest. I bet that’s the end; that they’re not going to look into the substance of the tapes with the concrete evidence of criminalism in high places. They may be protecting the Libranos.
In short, the RCMP may just have been, and may continue to be, fucking around, plain and simple. Pardon my language, please.
Time for the Conservatives to make a big splash by hiring an independent FBI/Scotland Yard forensic expert to listen to them. Not only will it signal the Tories’ contempt for the RCMP’s tactics, but will certainly give a definitive answer once and for all from an unbiased expert. It would certainly cause the MSM to sit up and take notice, probably have them screaming in outrage about why the Tories don’t trust the RCMP, etc. It shouldn’t be allowed to die. They vilified Grewal while the real criminals got off. Where are the Tories’ new PR folks?
The news on the tube last nite said that the RCMP had dropped their investigation of the Grewal tapes because ‘experts’ said they had been ‘altered’. (Were they altered before the RCMP got their hands on them- or afterwards?)
There is a move afoot here in B.C. to prohibit anyone from wearing Hells Angels insignia in certain public establishments (bars and other watering holes) because the H.A.’s have been designated a “criminal organization” under the Criminal Code.
Given some of the previous posts re the Grewal affair; given what we have learned about our new G.G. designate; given what we have learned from the Gomery hearings and Adscam; I move that henceforth any public displays of any insignia associated with the Liberal Party of Canada be declared unlawful….!
Is there a seconder for the motion?

Iraqis Agree to Share Oil
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said today that he expects a finished constitution to be delivered to the National Assembly tomorrow, one day ahead of the deadline. Negotiations are continuing, but Talabani said that he does not expect any issues to be reserved for future resolution.
Meanwhile, Austin Bay notes the huge significance of the “tentative deal” reached yesterday on division of control over Iraq’s oil wealth between the central government and the provinces:
Iraqs oil revenue sharing proposal is the clearest signal since the election that Iraqis : (1) see a future after Saddam and Zarqawi a future without either form of fascism; (2) intend to remain one state instead splitting into three (or more); (3) the federal system whatever its final form will recognize minority rights when it comes to cash.
Under the tentative deal, oil revenues will be distributed roughly according to population. One small point: Under the agreement, Iraq controls all the oil revenue. The U.S. gets nothing. Quick, someone tell Cindy Sheehan!
Last night Dosanj says, on the news, that his reputation was smeared by Grewal and the Leader of the opposition.

So ihear that canadian eat a lot of roadkill. Is it true?
It would appear that James has already been brainwashed by the newspeak notion that privately owned property that is open to selected members of the public somehow becomes public property.
An establishment is not public unless the property it sits on is owned by the state and its bills are paid by the state.
The technique of continuously eroding the notion of private property in the name of collectivist regulationism is crucial to the success of totalitarianism. It would behoove us to fight that rot as if our very freedom depends on it, because it does.
Tony–you are the first one to acknowledge this fact. Too many people do not think this through–public and private are vastly different.
Our respective governments have, through sleight of hand, designated privately owned bars etc. as ‘public’ property, when in effect it is private–it is owned and operated by a private person, is not run with tax dollars(unless we are talking about property owned by Liberal Senators). The public frequents the area but it is not owned by the public. How easily the governments have used doublespeak and no one questions it.
No one I have talked to has ever even thought about this. We are a nation of idiot sheep. All that matters is the spin.
I am wondering where the Conservative media people are too, Mrs. Thatcher! Mr. Grewal was slandered by Liberanoos, the MSM, and a lot of Joe Clark Tories!! What do you have to say Mr. McKay? Poor job , my foot!! GOOD JOB Mr. Grewal, BAD JOB Conservative media people!! Conservatives of Canada – DEMAND BETTER. If it had been ANY left wing nut M.P. the OUTRAGE would have been cracking our eardrums.
Mr. Cheney’s visit will help lay the groundwork for the time when the west becomes part of the US of A. As for the Librano$ log, I second the motion to ban it as it is a criminal organization, at least in principle(s).

Does anyone out there know what Grewal was being investigated for, regarding the tapes? It’s not against the law to tape your own conversations. An RCMP spokesperson said that after listning to the recordings and interviewing the people who were involved, they concluded that “no criminal investigation was warranted”.
I would assume that it was the PMO who were cleared of criminal wrongdoing. So why does Neale News say “RCMP: Grewal did not break the law in taping top Liberal…”?
The CBC site it links to has a large photo of Grewal, with the headline “No criminal probe over Grewal tapes, RCMP say”, and begins “The RCMP have decided not to launch a criminal investigation after reviewing audio recordings made by Conservative MP Gurmant Grewal, who accused the LIberals of trying to buy his vote and that of his wife, also a Tory MP”.
Kwaa? The PMO was the subject of a possible criminal investigation, so why is that not mentioned anywhere? WHy are Murphy and Dosanjh not the issue here. The RCMP should tell us what the possible charges were being investigated. This is absolutely not acceptable. What was Grewal under investigation for, regarding his taping of Murphy and Dosanjh? Don’t you need to be possibly breaking a law in order for the RCMP to be investigating you?
Perhaps the RCMP should come clean, and admit that it was the PMO was under a smoke-screen investigation, and not Grewal, so that the Lib-media won’t be able to fabricate headlines.
What were the possible charges against Grewal, pertaining the the taping? Does anyone know, or know someone who does?
Dave wrote: “The news on the tube last nite said that the RCMP had dropped their investigation of the Grewal tapes because ‘experts’ said they had been ‘altered’. (Were they altered before the RCMP got their hands on them- or afterwards?)”
Dave, is it possible you were really tired that nite or something and somehow misunderstood what the newscaster said? I have read various sources wrt the RCMP announcement, and none said that the Mounties dropped the investigation BECAUSE “experts” claimed the tapes were altered. I would expect that the RCMP themselves would have certainly as part of their job do their own forensic examination of the tapes, rather than, like lazy slobs, simply believe what the media and “experts” and their gov’t overlords have been claiming.
What I read was like: “…by the way, some experts had said the tapes were altered”. Of course, the MSM got even that wrong, as they should’ve said “appeared to have been”. So far there’s still been no proof of alteration. If the Mounties had done their job, they then would’ve found the tapes to be genuine, exonerated Mr. Grewal as they did, and are now proceeding to build a criminal case against the Liberals on the tape and perhaps Paul Martin himself. BUT ONLY IF THE RCMP IS DOING ITS JOB AND NOT JUST COVERING UP THE STATE’S CRIMES.
