David Radler: Outrage Watch

Toronto Star;

The RCMP conducted a “review” of fraud allegations relating to Hollinger International Inc. more than a year ago but found nothing to warrant further investigation in Canada.
An RCMP spokeswoman confirmed late yesterday that a team specializing in securities crime looked at the allegations in February 2004 but decided not to pursue them after about a month of work.
“After conducting a thorough review, it was determined that no Canadian investigation was required,” said RCMP Corporal Michele Paradis.

Yet, according to the Globe, David Radler – Conrad Black’s “long-time lieutenant” – is in hiding in his posh Vancouver home.

Federal prosecutors in Chicago yesterday indicted Lord Black’s long-time lieutenant, David Radler, his former corporate lawyer, Mark Kipnis, and private Toronto holding firm Ravelston Corp., alleging that they fraudulently diverted $32-million (U.S.) from Chicago publisher Hollinger International Inc.
[…]
The criminal charges are the most serious of any of the legal fights that have enveloped the Hollinger empire for the past two years. If convicted, Mr. Kipnis and Mr. Radler could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison for each of seven counts, and substantial fines.

Brace yourself for the coming storm of outrage on the Canadian horizon…

  1. I would tend to trust Black before I would trust the regulators. The fraud by businesses pales next to the daily drip-drip fraud of big government.

  2. What an attack on Canadian sovereignty! The Canadian Radler will serve a cruel and unusual sentence in the Gestapo US–real jail time–for crimes for which no capitalist is ever punished with prison in Canada.
Does that line of reasoning seem familiar?

  3. Actually, I think it would make a worthy campaign for all the conservative and libertarian bloggers to steal my logo and attach it to their sites…

  4. All I can say is with the current state of our media and political scene, we could use a man like Conrad Black again.
I’d let him steal from my pocket if he promised to put together a main-stream conservative rag.

    Done!

I’m happy to see justice being done, but this seriously throws a wrench in my plans to make Radler Canada’s “asshole-general”; sort of like auditor-general but commisar-like powers to reduce spending. Ever read an interview with the guy? Here’s how I envision it:
    Q. How did you cut federal spending $12 billion, Mr. Radler?
    A. Can I fucking tell you? I walked into Place du Portage, counted the desks, then personally threw over 2,600 redundant fucking socialists out the fucking window, OK?! Myriam Bedard was right: we were paying 3000% markup on advertising. Do I have to fucking tell you we don’t do that anymore? Our civil servant offices were locked into a 30 year lease with some fucking Liberal bagman at three fucking times market rate, OK!? Do I have to tell you? We fucking whacked that shit, OK?! To combat rampant theft and corruption in the civil service I fucking got a list of all of the Cessnas registered at Ottawa Intl. airport and crosschecked it with a list of civil servants. Do I fucking have to tell you?! Do I fucking have to tell you how many government employees pulling down a cool forty grand a year magically have the disposable imncome to own private airplanes!? We fucking whacked that shit too, OK?!

Ghost of a Flea links to and republishes a great paragraph written by James Lileks that every left winger should store on their computer. Here’s the paragraph from Lileks’ column.

  7. LOL Anonalogue! That’s brilliant. Maybe we SHOULD “save Dave” so he can be our a$$hole-general. Brilliant!
Kate, as soon as I figure out how to snag the pic, I will. (God, to think I used to teach people how to use computers. My how the mighty have fallen.)

  8. Hmm… the Libranos have obviously committed fraud in the 100-odd millions and may have done so also with billions we can’t even scrutinize and get away with it, but some non-Librano gets in deep, deep kaka for something to do with a relatively paltry alleged thirty million bucks?
    Talk about double standards!

  9. There’s a good column by Eric Reguly on this in today’s Globe “Report on Business”: ”

A couple of enthusiastic investors I know run tons of money and adore dissecting companies to expose hypocrisy, greed, accounting tricks and outright deception. When their fishing expeditions prove fruitful, they often tell the securities regulators. Years ago, they examined non-compete payments collected by the companies owned by Conrad Black, David Radler and other members of the Hollinger and Ravelston family.”

  10. Sorry as a small investor I just feel once more the OSC (Ontario Securities Commission) has stuck it in my ear, ( or a more unmentionable portion of my anatomy) This overpriced useless gang that can’t find any problems with YBM (russian mafia ripoff) fronted by David Peterson as a director – BreX ( so far no charges in either! Royal Tech (Sorbara former director) Nortel accounting, and now after a thorough examine a clean bill for Hollinger- My God – and they want this as a model for a national securites commission – it boggles the mind!

  11. kate, a lot of libertarians are opposed to the marijuana prohibition laws. also, emery’s marijuana party has a libertarian platform. speaking as a libertarian of sorts, i don’t think they’d really appreciate the humour you see in emery’s situation.
