Haroon Siddiqui’s latest Star column, “In-between world of war and no-war ” is simply more ill-informed drivel by someone who consistently twists facts (or does not know them in the first place, being to lazy to do the reseach–sound familiar regarding Canadian journalists?) in order to attack our Afstan mission.
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1144878609715&call_pageid=968256290204&col=968350116795
Mr Siddiqui writes that:
“The Dutch held a long parliamentary debate and agreed to the deployment but under strict conditions and starting only in September.
The British, as is their wont, made little noise but delayed the deployment nonetheless, to sometime this summer.”
Mr Siddiqui as usual has his facts wrong.
The Dutch deployment of some 1200 troops to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)–to serve under the Canadian-commanded multinational brigade–is scheduled to be complete by August 1–not starting in September as Mr Siddiqui claims.
http://www.mindef.nl/actueel/nieuws/2006/03/20060314_dtfvertrokken.aspx
Moreover the Dutch already have 250 special forces personnel now serving at Kandahar under US Operation Enduring Freedom: 165 commandos and 85 flying three Chinook helicopters. The helicopters in fact were bought from Canada and provide support to our troops at Kandahar, who have no helicopters of their own.
http://www.minbuza.nl/default.asp?CMS_ITEM=E259451BE2AA4C2296EC6032FA123DA1X1X57753X14
The British deployment has not been delayed, as Mr Siddiqui writes, until “sometime this summer”. Mr Siddiqui should have read Rosie DiManno’s April 11 story in the Star in which she writes that “several hundred British troops are already in Helmand the province to the west of Kandahar it will be six weeks until the full complement of 3,000 is in place”—around the beginning of June. In other words quite a few British soldiers are already there and the full complement will arrive before summer begins. No delay there.
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_PrintFriendly&c=Article&cid=1144705812047&call_pageid=970599119419
The UK troops will also serve under the Canadian-commanded multinational brigade.
Mr Siddiqui further writes:
“‘What guarantees do we have that NATO will take over from the Americans?’ asked the Bloc’s Francine Lalonde. ‘Is it a sure thing?’ asked Claude Bachand. Neither got an answer.”
Here is the answer, from a March 31 Reuters report:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12092890/from/RL.1/
“NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General James Jones said he expected the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to cover three-quarters of the country by July…”.
That is to say that Canadian-commanded Regional Command (South), where the Canadians and British are, and where the Dutch will be, will transition from Enduring Freedom to ISAF at that time. That may not be a guarantee but it seems pretty clear to me.
Finally, contrary to what Mr Siddiqui implies, both the NATO ISAF mission and US Operation Enduring Freedom are authorized under UN Security Council Resolution 1623 (2005), passed unanimously.

David Frum writes (second para):

“Meanwhile speaking of friends, it’s interesting to note that the Iranian mullahs still have some. The Canadian Islamic Congress, Canada’s most visible Muslim organization, has just congratulated the mullahs on their progress toward a nuclear bomb. Canadian diplomatic relations with Iran are currenly suspended because of the Iranian government’s involvement in the murder of a Canadian citizen in Iran in 2003. The CIC may be too slapstick a group to quite qualify as Fifth Columnists – but if the law cannot take the wish for the deed, Canadian public opinion can and should.”

Figured you’d find this story eventually. Lindzen says:
“It’s my belief that many scientists have been cowed not merely by money but by fear.”
But gives very little evidence for the truth of his beliefs, other than noting that Al Gore “bullied” scientists at congressional hearings and several Italian scientists “apparently” lost funding for questioning global warming. Didn’t even bother to call and find out for sure, “apparently”. Very weak stuff.
apparently losing climate-research funding for raising questions.

On the subject of Global Warming and taxpayer funded research,President Eisenhaur said two things the first of which was widely quoted”beware the military industrial complex”.The second was not widely quoted and was “do not let government fund university research!” We are seeing an example of the later.
The White House should clearly state what it was that Libby was asked to leak as this “correction” is actually worse for Libby’s case.
The key judgements did not have the uranium claim anyway, so if Libby was out there to discuss the uranium claim, why would he be reinforcing some of the key judgements when those did not mention the uranium claim?
Just using the key judgements of his liking without revealing the dissenting opinions inside the classified judgements would have been a deliberate attempt to continue to mislead the public and the press.
Wrt Cape Breton U, I’m glad Professor Mullan is able to keep his sense of humour in such Orwellian circumstances. The complainant in effect is complaining that Mr. Mullan having traditional, non-state-promoted beliefs is causing emotional harm to others; that Mr. Mullan having his own opinion — a widely held one — is an act of abuse which shows “complete disregard for the health and wellbeing” of those who hold other views.
Having equal rights is no longer sufficient for those who are drunk on the heady rum of state-sponsored enforcement of their own views. The person who is siccing various agencies against Mr. Mullan is insisting on the universal dominance of his/her position, and that various agencies must enforce a living condition where there be no disagreement allowed.
It’s so baldly hypocritical. Some universities have entire “Women’s Studies” departments devoted to comprehensively attacking traditional gender relations and promoting alternative — read “lesbian” — ones. When’s the last time you heard someone who believes in the traditional family unit whining, like Mr. Mullan’s accuser, that the opinions and views expressed in those departments show complete disregard for his/her health and well-being?
It’s increasingly obvious that all those fisted cries of “Freedom” that echoed on down from the sixties really meant “You’re goin’ down, square!”.

The Euston Manifesto We are democrats and progressives. We propose here a fresh political alignment. Many of us belong to the Left, but the principles that we set out are not exclusive. We reach out, rather, beyond the socialist Left towards egalitarian liberals and others of unambiguous democratic commitment. Indeed, the reconfiguration of progressive opinion that we aim for involves drawing a line between the forces of the Left that remain true to its authentic values, and currents that have lately shown themselves rather too flexible about these values. It involves making common cause with genuine democrats, whether socialist or… +

Liberal Catnip simply can’t handle the truth, it’s sad when so many people choose to believe the fantasies created about the motives and beliefs of service personnel.
Do Liberals really think armed forces personnel were raised in the basement of the Pentagon or something? Completely apart from the society they serve?
Duh! No. Soldiers grew up next door. Went to the same schools. People who become soldiers simply have a better understanding of the human condition and what motivates that condition.

Good one, TexasCanuck! 🙂
How about we invent a new word for the Left to use: “Progressivephobe”-anyone disagreeing with or questioning any aspect of leftist dogma. There’d also be it’s variants, “Progressivephobic”, “Progressivephobia”, etc.
That way, there’s a ready-made ad Hominem attack word for lefties unwilling or unable to sustain a logical discourse or debate on any aspect of their leftist secular theology.
Two wars not just terrorism
The MSM provides selective sanitized reporting on Shiite, Suni, and Hamas, Jewish struggles.
The MSM fails to cover the drug, sex and extortion war that goes on here in North America every day.
It takes the shooting deaths of eight biker soldiers for the MSM to cover our local corporate crime wars.
We should be more aware of, and alarmed at the expansion of drug addiction and the tremendous fast growing strain that puts on our health care and the economy in social support costs.
A sick foster child, nurtured back to good health by a home based care giver, was returned, by children’s services, to it’s eighteen year old drug addicted pregnant mother. Soon after, that mother vanished to parts unknown.
The population of young drug addicted sex and porn workers is growing. Yes they do have and raise kids.
Strip clubs have professional web sites that interlink to all cities and towns across the country. They offer exotic dancer services for conventions and stag parties. What kinds of income from CEOs and executives could digital photos from those events generate ?
There are groups of darkened buildings in many cities where commerce has died out. The buildings are occupied by crack-heads. Heads move in, business dies and business moves out.
E-mail in boxes and comment enabled websites are swamped with drug and sex explicit offerings. The majority of which carry reporting and data- mining malware.
The Banks are suffering losses they hope to keep hidden from public awareness. Credit card data is being compromised at an alarming rate. Notice, there is no mention of the buying and selling of drugs or grow ops or Afghanistan opium trade. No wonder the Hells Angels Corporation wants to keep a low profile. Like any corporation, public relations are important.
Seems to me like the MSM is helping them to maintain that Low key profile. TG
PS No mention of drug induced crimes of B&E car theft, Pawn shopped – stolen goods etc. The scope is just too wide. TG
Just to make things even clearer for Haroon Siddiqui: the UN Security Council has specifically welcomed NATO ISAF expansion to the south (Kandahar) and its cooperation with US Operation Enduring Freedom:
From UNSC Resolution 1659 (2006), February 15 (passed unanimously):
http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2006/sc8641.doc.htm
“The Security Council,
…
Recognizing the continuing importance of fighting terrorist and narcotic threats and addressing threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida and other extremist groups…
6. Acknowledges the continuing commitment of NATO to lead the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), and welcomes the adoption by NATO of a revised Operational Plan allowing the continued expansion of the ISAF across Afghanistan, closer operational synergy with the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and support, within means and capabilities, to Afghan security forces in the military aspects of their training and operational deployments…”

“Leftist secular theology?” Holy generalizations Batman! And I won’t even try to guess what that is supposed to mean.
Does anyone know anything about this story?
Apparently the author of a novel about global warming called “Hotter than Hell” received a call from the Environment Minister telling him he should not attend the his own book launch, because the timing was not good for the gov’t. He is a gov’t of Canada employee. I just can’t see Rona Ambrose doing this, please some one tell me this is a concocted publicity stunt.

All persons ‘shall cooperate’.Failure to cooperate is grounds for ‘discipline’.

Rural routes uprooted
Apr. 10, 2006. 07:46 AM
For more than 150 years, rural mail delivery has been as much a Canadian tradition as pond hockey or maple syrup.
But folks in rural areas of York Region are facing a new reality that makes them drive up to six kilometres to get the letters and bills that used to be brought to the end of their driveways.
It’s all because a few mail carriers at a Newmarket postal station figured that driving country roads was getting too dangerous. They complained to Labour Canada that they couldn’t pull their cars far enough off the road to be safe from passing cars while sliding mail into post-mounted boxes….

Ryan (6:14 p.m., April 13): Apparently, the guy had planned a book launch, with television crews invited, at a government building and had billed himself as an Environment Canada employee–which he is.
Can YOU see anything wrong with this? He has written a NOVEL on global warming, and rather than arrange a book launching of his fictional take on global warming, he uses a government venue and his credentials as an Environment Canada employee…
If I was the government in power, I’d definitely have a problem with this. The gullible public would likely think that he was speaking in an official capacity–which may well have been his intention. He must be a Liberal.
Give me a break. Harper’s government is right again, as in CORRECT and PERFECTLY ENTITLED to stop the launch of a book written in a government employee’s spare time, who nevertheless feels that he’s entitled to use a government venue of launch said fiction.
Give me a break!!!
NKOTB:
Ah I see, I guess the the good ol’ boys at the CBC failed to mention the setting and context for the story. Must be another rare slip up from our partial and objective media.
The book can’t be that good anyway I can’t find anything about it or the author, plus they had paperbacks at the launch, who launches a book with a paperback?
“…the guy had planned a book launch, with television crews invited, at a government building and had billed himself as an Environment Canada employee–which he is…”
Being able to book time-off from your paid government job for “personal business”, then claiming overtime to “catch up” on your government work has never been easier.
I just wonder if this employee was also able to manage get some kind of government grant to write it in the first place.
Correction to my post about the book launch of “Hotter than Hell” by Mark Tushingham:
The venue for the book launch was the National Press Club–BUT he had still billed himself as an Environment Canada scientist and, seeing as the launch wasn’t slated for a Saturday or Sunday, it appears that he was doing this during work time.
Given that the author is a scientist at EC and the subject of the book is a fictional account of global warming, a viewer could easily come to the conclusion that Environment Canada was endorsing Tushingham’s conclusions.
I think that Mark Tushingham had a lot of nerve to try and launch his book using his position as a scientist at Environment Canada to give it extra cache and clout. I guess under the Lieberals this would be considered business as usual. Well, as Kate says, “Meet the new boss.”
