“This is not journalism; it is a vendetta.”

Foreign Affairs shunted aside when Canada’s top soldier insisted on signing 2005 deal that left no follow-up role for Ottawa” – Globe and Mail, May 2
Mark Collins;

“Eddie the Ego’s paper, in its insistent attack on our Afghan mission, now targets the Chief of Defence Staff on the strength of two anonymous sources in Foreign Affairs. This is not journalism; it is a vendetta.”

Conference of Defence Associations lays out the false assertions of the Globe article, (in addition to an earlier one by Jim Travers in the Toronto Star).

In “Who’s watching the generals?”, published in the Toronto Star last Thursday (see link below), James Travers suggests that the Arrangement for the Transfer of Detainees Between the Canadian Forces and the Ministry of Defence of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (see link below for the text of the Agreement) was drafted and finalized without any “significant” involvement from the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Additionally, in “Hillier pushed flawed detainee plan”, published in today’s Globe and Mail (see link below), Paul Koring et al, cite sources who claim that Foreign Affairs was “shunted aside” and “was not consulted” during the development of the Arrangement for the Transfer of Detainees.
These are erroneous statements. CDA has learned from a very reliable source within the Department of Foreign Affairs that it is not true that the Department of Foreign Affairs was “pushed to the sidelines” when the detainee arrangement was struck, nor that the Department was not “consulted”. Nor is it true that “The bureaucrats at Foreign Affairs resisted getting stuck with this issue”. We have been assured that the negotiation of the agreement on the transfer of detainees was the subject of intensive collaboration between DFAIT and DND over many months, with all the expected responsibility centres in both departments involved. These included at DFAIT the International Security Bureau, the Asia Bureau and the Legal Bureau; and at DND, Director-General International Security Policy and the Judge Advocate General. In addition, the most senior officials in both departments (including then Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Bill Graham) were aware of and signed off on the agreement, as did senior staff at PCO.

Read them both.

  1. Canadian media are making Afghanistan the agenda issue with DND, O’Connor and Hillier in the crosshairs.
The Taliban are more than delighted at the ND’s, Libs and Blochheads in parliament as Canadian appeasers, led by Canadian MSM.
A damned shame they weren’t as diligent on the Chretien Liberal government corruption issue for a decade or more.
Agendas only as required, to an end, remove conservatives from government.
However I recall Harper giving the G&M a misinformation well aimed smackdown, for Canadians viewing QP yesterday.

  2. Perhaps Iggy and Dion should question former PM Martin, if he ever shows up in the House, on the agreement, then go back and question Chretain. Bill Graham is there so ask him to explain. I think PMSH had to have know of the paper trail leading back to Chretain and Martin. This is just another example of Dion and Iggy not knowing what went on during their watch. Other lib ex ministers also had to know it is their responsibility re the agreement, but in order to protect dion have kept quiet. Or, maybe it is to again make dion look weak, so iggy can take over.
This is just another case of gotcha politics that will come back and bite the libs in the ass. Their attack on Team Canada will also backfire on them. For the first time, Dryden has made an intelligent comment re the issue. So how many times have the libs tried their gotch tricks, only to have it come back and haunt them. Come on dion, lets hear, its not fair, and watch that ad of you imitating Judge Judy.

  3. Bill Graham had his paws on this, eh?
Could this vendetta really find its political source in circling the wagons around the Liberal Party of Canada?

  4. This is clearly the Liberals, via their friends in the MSM, creating an alibi incase the sh!t hits the fan. Typical Liberal operating procedure.
Also, it’s pay back for the “decade of darkness” comment.

  5. The virulent left has been after Hillier from day one…he is a sybolic target for degenerate moonbat dogma as he is a soldier’s general and unapologetic of a soldier’s duty…which is to kill his nation’s enemies and win the engagements he is thrown into…they hate him because he isn’s Elmer the pink-assed safety elephant in a CAF Berret….real, stoic soldiers who hold duty/loyaty/honor as a credo are abhorent to the decadent left because they are reminded by contrast how weak, cowardly and degenerate lefitst dogma has made them….deep down they know they need stoic individuals like Hilliar to provide security and to save their pathetic gutless bacon…they just hate being reminded of it.
The vindictive left media use him as a convenient way of indirectly getting at the military…which they hate but can’t admit to because they are busy milking the “we love our troops BUT…” schtick.
General Hilliar is NOT a politician…so he has no need to seek oily compromises with his attackers in the degenerate left media…he should approach them like he does any enemy….directly and on a level battlefield of his choosing. I hope when the dust clears there are a few craven leftard scribblers carcasses hung out to dry by the courts in slander cases.
BTW: Does anyone else notice Travers’ scribbling is becoming nervously shrill and disjointed lately? Maybe that wretched stench he smells is his career burning up fast 😉

  6. All is well with the Liberal Party. Make no policy and it is not there fault. Make a policy, then blame someone else when it doesn’t work.Above all be rightously indignant whenever you speak of the other parties and the left will love you. Oh and if it goes to court blame the bureaucrats.

  7. Just checked the poll in the g&m re how concerned are you re detainees. Yesterday the majority voted not concerned, today it has changed to 69% very concerned. Get over and vote.

  8. It’s a Vendetta, period. It’s all they can muster in their desperation. A band of people who screwed up royally and now are trying to shift the blame.
The media is as stupid as we’ve ever had, the Opposition is the worst in memory.
I have to think, at least hope, Harper has a plan and will take it to the lot of them.

  9. It just never stops! The CTV/G&M creating phony news with unfounded assertions is SOP. Count on CBC talking heads to keep up the prattle and blather as well.
Meanwhile a bunch of clowns in Ottawa are wasting our tax dollars with an inquisition of Hockey players!
The entire spectrum of leftard ideologues are a blight on our society.

  10. I don’t think it’s simply a vendetta; it’s a Liberal/NDP political strategy against the Conservatives.
It has little to do with the Afghan War, and, astonishingly, ignores the facts. The fact that all terrorists claim they have been tortured; it’s Rule No. 1 in their Handbook. And second, it ignores that these people are terrorists – intent of the murder of civilians.
But I think that this is yet another part of the Liberal strategy to regain power. They are making this into an emotional, hysteric, Guilt Tactic.
This is the keystone of their Liberal Strategy – invoking deep emotional feelings of Guilt and Sin in the Canadian population; pointing the finger at the Source of This Sin, the Conservatives, and leading, they hope, to the Way Of Of Sin, the Liberals.
Their Kyotoism is a completely similar tactic. Move into an issue only on the emotional level; reject reason, facts, science, fallibility. Function only on the emotional level.
And, operate on this emotional level within the tactic of Sin and Redemption. The Sin is to be located within the government of the Conservatives; the Redemption, within the Liberals.
So, we have the Afghan War – they’ve found the Sin, within the prisoners. They had tried to find Sin within the war in other ways but had so far failed.
We have Kyotoism; that’s an easy tactic to find Sin and Redemption; they are working hard on that.
The Liberals have only one operational mode. It isn’t policies, it’s manipulation of the public. They manipulate via emotion; their view of the electorate is the ‘beer and popcorn’ mentality – ie, a population without reason, without facts or the desire for facts.
And their current strategy within the emotional tactic, is the Sin and Redemption strategy.

  11. The behaviour of the opposition and their pals in the media has been disgusting. Between their hysterical pursuit of a trumped up crisis and complete fabrications, all they’ve managed to do is aid and abet our enemy. The revolting witch-hunt of Shane Doan is the icing on the cake.
If you add up the percentage of Canadians that support these twerps, it forms a majority of the population. Quite frankly, if I were a soldier now I’d be asking myself whether or not this country is worth defending…

  12. I think that the media and the opposition are out to lunch on this, I drive daily on the major highways around Toronto, with my Support The Troops sticker. They are everywhere on cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Maybe we need ‘Go Hillier’ stickers as well.
We are dealing with the Taliban – murderers and thugs, do we believe everything they say?
So they clain to be tortured….tough, if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

  13. I recall Mark Collins over at Daimnation documenting the “Hillier Youth” slur.
Then of course there was the infamous ‘soldiers with guns, in your cities, in Canada slur’ during the 05/06 election campaign.
Does anyone notice the consistent pattern of slagging the Canadian Forces amongst LIEberal apologists?
If I need to understand SIN and REDEMPTION, I believe this is called going to church on Sunday, or visiting temple, etc. as the case may be.
ET the proposition that the government can ever be described as an ‘ersatz religion’ should be treated with a high degree of caution.
Now we are supposed to believe in the cult of LIEberaldom?
It is normal for human beings to have emotion; but at least get them married to reason. The consistent appeals to emotion coming out of LIEberaldom reminds me of PM Paul Martin’s “Hail Mary Pass” of removing the notwithstanding clause during the televised debates.
Everybody with the least Constitutional inclination was scratching their head and asking:
    “What is he saying?”
The latest attempt to smear of course is the detainee issue; when the Ministers Responsible were Bill Graham and Paul Martin himself.
The silence on these facts alone should convince Dion to beat a hasty retreat.

  14. Kate, don’t you think it is time to reload this: http//:www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/003532.html? I mean it’s time to chuck some real dirt at our pompous elected and unelected hard working civil servants and all their hangers-ons, who bilk the taxpayer of a lot of money, yet claim to be so morally superior to the great unwashed who are just trying to pay for all of their entitlements and have something left over for themselves.

  16. I think the Globe and Mail and Liberals have been undermining the mission with the manufacturing of an abuse scandal. I think it’s disgraceful.
I see that CanWest has come out with a story that Paul Martin initiated the agreement to transfer detainees.
Would love to see what the Globe and Dion think about that one.

  17. the libs cannot understand the armed forces, they think they are emergency snow shovels for Trona.the libs continue to distract with this abuse crap and now the national hockey team.
I think Doan and Coderre should settle this Mano-O-Mano on ice. or really Mano-o- girly Mano.
“Dat is not fair, Da troops dey dit not shoval da snow in moi rye ding but da pipples of trono is need help whit der heaby burr dons” Borat Dion.

  18. As Martin Luther King noted no lie lives forever
Greenspon’s fabrications to protect his Liberal Party friends are no exception. Apparently the National Post is starting to shine a light on these lies.
Also a new agreement is now in place.
At the risk of being insensitive, it’s hard to imagine the treatment of captured Taliban by the Afghan gov’t being a ballot box question in Canada.

  19. How do journalists look themselves in the mirror without hating what they see? I suppose those without consceinces don’t suffer the burden of guilt. I couldn’t tell bald-face lies constantly for the purposes of misleading the public and driving an undeclared agenda (aka propaganda) without being sick with myself.

  20. hans – I’m not describing the government as an ‘ersatz religion’.
I’m describing the Liberal strategy of manipulating the public, which is a specific tactic which I name as ‘Sin and Redemption’. It is based on emotional manipulation, where the Liberals define the electorate as ‘guilty of bad behaviour’ and point out the ‘way to redeem themselves’. By the action – of electing the Liberal Party.
So, the environmental ‘big stick’ of Dion fits into that strategy. It is an action that preys on the feeling of emotional culpability of we humans, for our lives and well-being. We have Sinned – in this case, against the Environment. And the Redemption, is – Vote Liberal. Dion doesn’t know about and doesn’t give a damn about the environment; he has one agenda. Power.
It has nothing to do with religion, but has to do with the pyschological nature of humans – to feel guilty for ‘bad behaviour’ and want release from that stress ofo guilt.
Same with the military in Afghanistan. The Liberals have been trying to find a Sin and Redemption tactic in this area. It has been difficult because the Conservatives always remind them, that they sent the military there. Now, they have ‘found it’!!! Three cheers! The Liberals are claiming that the Canadian Military have Sinned, because they have…etc. Redemption, of course, is to Elect the Liberals.
What else? This is the Main Strategy of the Liberals. No policies. Just pure emotional manipulation based on two emotional states. The first state is Guilt, Shame, Remorse etc. The second state is Release from the first state. The Liberal Strategy is to find as many situations as possible of State One; blame it on the Conservatives, and offer themselves as the Means to the Second State.
I call is Sin and Redemption – a particular characteristic of the Western psyche.
How about the Doan situation? Same thing. It’s considered Sinful to even breathe a word of criticism against Quebec/francophone. So, even though the evidence is invisible, the Liberals are blowing it sky-high. They are doing that for ONE Reason only. Votes. In Quebec. That’s the only reason. Redemption from this evil practice or thought? Vote Liberal (or, in this case, NDP and Bloc). It’s all about ONE THING. Votes.

  21. everybody’s wrong except the socialists. i am so tired of people who can’t think or refuse to think.

  22. *
You wanna see someone who should be in the “alien abduction”
    end of the pool
    on this… I have a contender… in the comments…
i had to see if i heard correctly …
“so, harper and the conservatives are backstabbing bastards for
not implementing the liberals “proposed” kelowna agreement
election promise… and insensitive torture-mongers for continuing
to abide by the agreement the liberals negotiated, signed and
were using in afghanistan for years until harper got elected?”

right… i just have one question.

  23. So how does this work? We’re not supposed to hand over any prisoners to the Afgans but we should pull out our troops and hand the whole country over to the Taliban.
I guess that makes about as much sense as anything else the moonbats have come up with in the last decade.

  24. I am waiting for the truth to show up discredit MSM yet again. Unfortunately no one has yet done the definitive research to show the source material the G&M used was bogus.

  25. I never believe any story from the MSM that uses “some”, “many”, “critics” or any other anonymous source or vague reference. I’ll stop reading an article at the first usage of those spin words and discount the topic as someones personal fabricated agenda.
