    I’ve read the blogosphere’s several accounts of Tuesday’s Canadian Human Rights Tribunal hearing in Ottawa in the Warman v. Lemire case, and it’s on that basis that I’ve formed my first impressions. You can read some of those reports here, here, here, here, here, here, here and from the defendant himself here. I’ve also seen two newspaper stories, this one from the National Post’s Joseph Brean, and this one by the Ottawa Citizen’s Don Butler.
    I’d prefer to review the actual transcripts of the hearing, but from what I’ve read, there will be no transcripts made, only an audio recording.

  9. ‘Speaking of the Michael Lee Chin Crystal addition to the Royal Ontario Museum: Like the post at Diogenes Borealis, I also think the design stinks. I call it Mars Attacks, because it looks like a meteor shot through the hemisphere and “just happened” to crash into the ROM. It has nothing to do with the architecture of either the ROM or the gracious, old buildings around it. It’s an aberration, a carbuncle, an eyesore.
    ‘Figures that the architect has designed a building that is dangerous, as well. I’ll remember to walk on the other side of the street in melting season.
    ‘Was in the ROM just a few days ago, and have to say I was completely underwhelmed by the interior design: ‘Stairways are of poured concrete, rivets in the walls exposed, has a feeling of half-finished. UGG-LEEEE. Sure, the ceilings are high enough to house the ROM’s dinosaur collection but we didn’t need Michael Lee Chin’s design to furnish high ceilings: The ROM already had them.
    So, I’m just wondering…when you follow the money: Who made it? Certainly not the taxpayers of Toronto. I think we’ve been had…
    I’m now just waiting for the threatened removal of the “Royal” from the ROM. Maybe Chin’s chrystal was designed for the OM mantra…

    I believe it was Knight 99—sorry if I’m wrong—and I who were having a pleasant back and forth about this very topic—charitable givings by political persuasion—the other day. Although humility’s a virtue, I’m pleased to see—not just off the top of my head: I’ve read about the Brooks book—that my hypotheses were correct. This article by George Will neatly summarizes the evidence.
    A couple of excerpts:
    “Brooks demonstrates a correlation between charitable behavior and ‘the values that lie beneath’ liberal and conservative labels. Two influences on charitable behavior are religion and attitudes about the proper role of government.
    “The single biggest predictor of someone’s altruism, Willett says, is religion. It increasingly correlates with conservative political affiliations because, as Brooks’ book says, ‘the percentage of self-described Democrats who say they have ‘no religion’ has more than quadrupled since the early 1970s.’ America is largely divided between religious givers and secular nongivers, and the former are disproportionately conservative. One demonstration that religion is a strong determinant of charitable behavior is that the least charitable cohort is a relatively small one — secular conservatives . . .
    “While conservatives tend to regard giving as a personal rather than governmental responsibility, some liberals consider private charity a retrograde phenomenon — a poor palliative for an inadequate welfare state, and a distraction from achieving adequacy by force, by increasing taxes.     This little gem was commissioned by the Insurance Bureau of Canada to justify raising insurance rates to mitigate the effects of the severe weather caused by (da da da daaaah) Climate Change. Mark Yakabuski is the witless wonder who is the president and CEO of the IBC who proclaimed “The carbon dioxide and other pollutants that are already in the enviroment as a result of greenhouse gas emmissions will be in our enviroment for at least 50 years”.
    Severe weather, blah blah blah…heightened risk, blah blah blah… justifying rate increases etc. etc.

    What I find most offensive about that POS addition is that they demolished the last generation’s trendy eye-sore to build this generation’s eye-sore without learning the obvious lesson.
    You have a beautiful, enduring heritage building upon which they vandalized it the first time with the 50’s or 60’s addition which didn’t hold the test of time because they went with trendy instead of classical.
    Now they decide that last gen’s trendy isn’t good enough so they repeat the error with this gen’s trendy eye-sore – at great expense.
    I thought the principle role of a museum was to preserve the nation’s heritage – not vandalize and wreck it. Two generations of management have failed their most basic duty to the institution.
    Is there a school where people learn stupid?

    …a conference in London that I attended yesterday to discuss issues arising from the presence of Muslims in Europe. A more stellar display of brazen sophistry on the one hand and intellectual cravenness on the other would be hard to imagine. It was a collection of big-wigs in the dialogue-of-civilisations business…
    There were a couple of brave souls at yesterday’s meeting who tried to put the other side of the argument, but they were outnumbered. With facts, reason and logic turned on their heads over and over again by people deemed to be ‘moderate’ and endorsed by others deemed to be ‘enlightened’, the discussion felt like a dialogue of the demented. This kind of establishment initiative which is so typical is itself part of the problem rather than the solution, because it provides a high-level platform for yet more mind-bending dissimulation. There were repeated statements at this meeting that Europe no longer stood for any recognisable values. They should have been howled down; but apart from some rather feeble disagreement, too many Europeans present either seemed to agree or kept their mouths zipped.
    This is surely how a civilisation dies — with a whimper.

    JERUSALEM (AP) – With Iranian backing, Hezbollah guerrillas have dramatically increased their rocket range and can now threaten most of Israel, senior Israeli defense officials said.
    The Lebanese group has acquired new Iranian rockets with a range of about 185 miles, the officials said Wednesday. That means the guerrillas can hit anywhere in Israel’s heavily populated center and reach as far south as Dimona, where Israel’s nuclear reactor is located.
    The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge the confidential intelligence assessment to the media.
    When Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in 2006, Hezbollah fired nearly 4,000 rockets into Israel. The longest-range rockets fired, which Israel said were Iranian-made, hit some 45 miles inside Israel.

  49. Apparently, the so-called Michael Chin “Crystal” doesn’t even meet architectural/building standards–just an example, the “V”-shaped outcroppings, which are level with a lot of kids’ eyes: they trip, they fall into one of them, and Long John Silver.
    I agree that if the original design had been adhered to, it might have been quite spectacular–but who OK-ed it? Apparently, a glass design would have endangered many of the exhibits by exposing them to too much light (wouldn’t/shouldn’t some “expert” have known this?) and the glare from a glass building had the potential of blinding drivers passing by.
    “Mars Attacks” seems to have been a complete F***-up and just too typical of multiculural Toronto. I wonder if a guy called Michael Smith would have been given carte blanche to put up an addition not up to building standards and with a number of potential deficits caused from too much light/reflection…One more badly conceived idea that Toronto taxpayers have to pay for–and look at…
