McQuaig is annoying, no doubt. Cute, but annoying. A leftist Ann Coulter, sort of. Love to see the two in a no-holds-barred debate…

China lashes out at British press for comparing Beijing Olympics to 1936 Nazi Berlin Games
    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1992349/posts
    “1936 and 2008; What a Difference 72 Years Makes?
In 1936, The International Olympic Committee(IOC) put on one of the saddest propaganda displays in human history. They did this on behalf of a crazy despot who would go on to execute millions of people for not measuring up to the standards of an Aryan Superman master race. The 1936 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, served as a great coming out party for international fascism. It was a form of warfare before the first shots of WW II were ever fired.
With Leni Riefenstahl panning the camera, the propaganda film Olympia hit the screens in 1938 to spread the false message that Hitler’s Germany was the standard of excellence for the modern world.
The public relations fiasco aspect of this experience should have taught the IOC as much about the diplomatic importance the Olympics had taken on. But then again, Hitler learned nothing about his master race doctrine by watching Jesse Owens run laps around his Aryan Supermen either.
Thus, perhaps as evidence that history is truly cyclical, rather than progressive, the IOC has awarded the 2008 Summer Olympic to Beijing, China. Here we have a regime that cracks down on basic human rights, and succeeds a string of prior governments with a tradition of espousing doctrines of racial superiority that would make Nietsche raise a stein of Lowenbrau Keller’s finest wares.”

I’ve read the blogosphere’s several accounts of Tuesday’s Canadian Human Rights Tribunal hearing in Ottawa in the Warman v. Lemire case, and it’s on that basis that I’ve formed my first impressions. You can read some of those reports here, here, here, here, here, here, here and from the defendant himself here. I’ve also seen two newspaper stories, this one from the National Post’s Joseph Brean, and this one by the Ottawa Citizen’s Don Butler.
I’d prefer to review the actual transcripts of the hearing, but from what I’ve read, there will be no transcripts made, only an audio recording.
    No transcripts
Let’s start there in our analysis: …-

  8. ‘Speaking of the Michael Lee Chin Crystal addition to the Royal Ontario Museum: Like the post at Diogenes Borealis, I also think the design stinks. I call it Mars Attacks, because it looks like a meteor shot through the hemisphere and “just happened” to crash into the ROM. It has nothing to do with the architecture of either the ROM or the gracious, old buildings around it. It’s an aberration, a carbuncle, an eyesore.
‘Figures that the architect has designed a building that is dangerous, as well. I’ll remember to walk on the other side of the street in melting season.
‘Was in the ROM just a few days ago, and have to say I was completely underwhelmed by the interior design: ‘Stairways are of poured concrete, rivets in the walls exposed, has a feeling of half-finished. UGG-LEEEE. Sure, the ceilings are high enough to house the ROM’s dinosaur collection but we didn’t need Michael Lee Chin’s design to furnish high ceilings: The ROM already had them.
So, I’m just wondering…when you follow the money: Who made it? Certainly not the taxpayers of Toronto. I think we’ve been had…
I’m now just waiting for the threatened removal of the “Royal” from the ROM. Maybe Chin’s chrystal was designed for the OM mantra…

  9. Gord Tulk, you beat me to it!
I believe it was Knight 99—sorry if I’m wrong—and I who were having a pleasant back and forth about this very topic—charitable givings by political persuasion—the other day. Although humility’s a virtue, I’m pleased to see—not just off the top of my head: I’ve read about the Brooks book—that my hypotheses were correct. This article by George Will neatly summarizes the evidence.
    A couple of excerpts:
“Brooks demonstrates a correlation between charitable behavior and ‘the values that lie beneath’ liberal and conservative labels. Two influences on charitable behavior are religion and attitudes about the proper role of government.
“The single biggest predictor of someone’s altruism, Willett says, is religion. It increasingly correlates with conservative political affiliations because, as Brooks’ book says, ‘the percentage of self-described Democrats who say they have ‘no religion’ has more than quadrupled since the early 1970s.’ America is largely divided between religious givers and secular nongivers, and the former are disproportionately conservative. One demonstration that religion is a strong determinant of charitable behavior is that the least charitable cohort is a relatively small one — secular conservatives . . .
“While conservatives tend to regard giving as a personal rather than governmental responsibility, some liberals consider private charity a retrograde phenomenon — a poor palliative for an inadequate welfare state, and a distraction from achieving adequacy by force, by increasing taxes. Ralph Nader, running for president in 2000, said: ‘A society that has more justice is a society that needs less charity.’ Brooks, however, warns: ‘If support for a policy that does not exist … substitutes for private charity, the needy are left worse off than before. It is one of the bitterest ironies of liberal politics today that political opinions are apparently taking the place of help for others.’
“IN 2000, BROWS WERE FURROWED IN PERPLEXITY BECAUSE VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE’S CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS, AS A PERCENT OF HIS INCOME, WERE BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE: HE GAVE 0.2 PERCENT OF HIS FAMILY INCOME, ONE-SEVENTH OF THE AVERAGE FOR DONATING HOUSEHOLDS. [Emphasis mine] But Gore ‘gave at the office.’ By using public office to give other peoples’ money to government programs, he was being charitable, as liberals increasingly, and conveniently, understand that word.”
Wouldn’t it be interesting to know what Dr. Fruitfly gives . . .

  11. You mean the ROM addition is no different than the metal roof on my detached garage?
I have heard Christopher Hume on talk radio and he speaks with a snobbily British accent so I was taken aback to learn that he was born in the north Toronto suburb of Willowdale. heh
Here is one man’s take on Hume and the Rom addition as it was being built:

  13. Canada should adopt the Swiss method of dealing with criminal Muslims. If one commits a crime, the whole family is stripped of citizenship and gets deported.

  15. Re: the ROM’s horrid new addition:
What I find most offensive about that POS addition is that they demolished the last generation’s trendy eye-sore to build this generation’s eye-sore without learning the obvious lesson.
You have a beautiful, enduring heritage building upon which they vandalized it the first time with the 50’s or 60’s addition which didn’t hold the test of time because they went with trendy instead of classical.
Now they decide that last gen’s trendy isn’t good enough so they repeat the error with this gen’s trendy eye-sore – at great expense.
I thought the principle role of a museum was to preserve the nation’s heritage – not vandalize and wreck it. Two generations of management have failed their most basic duty to the institution.
Is there a school where people learn stupid?

  18. Melanie Phillips, Not With A Bang…
…a conference in London that I attended yesterday to discuss issues arising from the presence of Muslims in Europe. A more stellar display of brazen sophistry on the one hand and intellectual cravenness on the other would be hard to imagine. It was a collection of big-wigs in the dialogue-of-civilisations business…
There were a couple of brave souls at yesterday’s meeting who tried to put the other side of the argument, but they were outnumbered. With facts, reason and logic turned on their heads over and over again by people deemed to be ‘moderate’ and endorsed by others deemed to be ‘enlightened’, the discussion felt like a dialogue of the demented. This kind of establishment initiative which is so typical is itself part of the problem rather than the solution, because it provides a high-level platform for yet more mind-bending dissimulation. There were repeated statements at this meeting that Europe no longer stood for any recognisable values. They should have been howled down; but apart from some rather feeble disagreement, too many Europeans present either seemed to agree or kept their mouths zipped.
This is surely how a civilisation dies — with a whimper.

  19. Chris Sands, Afghanistan: is it too late?
A week or so later I joined members of the British army’s 1st Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles as they patrolled through a valley in Uruzgan. Signs of militant activity were clearly visible, with well-made bunkers and trenches dotting the landscape. But local people denied there were any insurgents around and the troops did not know what to think. In the end I asked an Afghan interpreter his opinion.
“Of course, everyone in this village is Taliban,” he said. “The men, women and children, they are all Taliban.”

  21. The Michael Lee Chin Crystal might have had a chance if they stuck with the original design and made it look, you know, like a crystal. Instead they cut back and used what looks like cheap aluminum siding. It’s Toronto, it’s fugly (hint: you want good architecture, go to Buffalo. The Queen City has it all over T.O.).

“Dutch ex-Muslim producing The Life of Muhammad”
    (radionetherlands)
The Hague – Former Dutch Labour Party politician Ehsan Jami, the founder of the Committee of ex-Muslims, has announced that he is producing an anti-Islamic cartoon called The Life of Muhammad. It will be released on the 20th of April. The film will show a sexually aroused Prophet Muhammad with his nine-year-old wife Aisha.
Members of the Dutch Muslim and government contact organisation, CMO, who have viewed a section of the film, say they will go to court in an attempt to have The Life of Muhammad banned. The organisation has described the film as totally unacceptable and extremely offensive.
    ———————–
Actually, what’s extremely offensive is that Muslims present this pedophile as a prophet. That’s offensive.

JERUSALEM (AP) – With Iranian backing, Hezbollah guerrillas have dramatically increased their rocket range and can now threaten most of Israel, senior Israeli defense officials said.
The Lebanese group has acquired new Iranian rockets with a range of about 185 miles, the officials said Wednesday. That means the guerrillas can hit anywhere in Israel’s heavily populated center and reach as far south as Dimona, where Israel’s nuclear reactor is located.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge the confidential intelligence assessment to the media.
When Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in 2006, Hezbollah fired nearly 4,000 rockets into Israel. The longest-range rockets fired, which Israel said were Iranian-made, hit some 45 miles inside Israel.

I’m sure the anti-Semitic a$$holes in the Media will find a way to blame Israel for it’s “disportinate response” when they have the unforgiveable odacity to respond to attacks…

  27. Now Muslims are claiming that Freedom of Speech was actually, er, a Muslim invention (from gatesofvienna.blogspot.com
“Today a campaign by an organization called “The Prophet of Mercy” has been launched in the Danish media.”
Below is a translation of the advertisement:
Freedom of speech at any price?
    Addressing the Danish people
Freedom of speech and the right to have your own opinion is guaranteed within Islam and is one of Islam’s most important contributions to the world from more than 1400 years ago. Actually, all heavenly revealed religions, faiths and laws guarantees man the right to think and express himself freely as long as these expressions do not lead to mocking or discrimination against others or encourage religious or racial hatred. One of the worst kind of religious discrimination is to ridicule the prophets or the messengers.
(Now come the death threats, unless we stop having freedom of speech)
We were very surprised by the connection which was drawn between the charges against some individuals who wanted to take revenge on one of the artists and a deliberate mocking of every Muslim nation deep in their innermost religious heart by reprinting the drawings. We would here like to emphasize that Islam condemns any act that weakens the security of society, especially killings and arson. As a matter of fact, Muslims still lack a formal disavowal of the reprinting of the drawings from relevant authorities. We are convinced that such a dissociation would help to prevent a repeat of such unhappy reactions.
Finally, we would like to encourage all sensible and peace-loving people as well as economic and cultural organizations to do their best to secure good cultural and economic relations between people from Denmark and the Muslim world.
    ———————–
Pathetic people, harnessed to a diabolically offensive ideology. Their arrogance is continually demonstrated by their accusations against non-Muslim culture, while never questioning their own. Do they not think non-Muslims would see their freedom of speech claim as an outrageous and bald faced lie, thereby weakening their crediblity even further? I guess not.
More lampooning, more ridicule, more cartoons are necessary.

Here’s a Condi Rice term I recently encountered a second time (earlier I thought I’d conjured it up in a nightwmare!):
    TIGHT SEQUENTIALISM.
It seems, that the earlier 3 stage Road map in which 1st stage the PaliNazis would shut down the terror infrastructure and end genocidal jew-hate propaganda in the parliament, mosques, schools and the media — was a bit of a stumbling block.
Condi has now concluded, in the very best tradition of pointy-headed high-IQ [or was it affirmative action?] academic reasoning that the problem was “tight sequentialism” — that there was no need for the “pieces partner” to actually abandon his desire to destroy Israel and kill all Jews; that, this could come later after he was overwhelmed by Israel’s unilateral good will concessions — quids with no quos. Ya know, like with Gaza.

  36. Apparently, the so-called Michael Chin “Crystal” doesn’t even meet architectural/building standards–just an example, the “V”-shaped outcroppings, which are level with a lot of kids’ eyes: they trip, they fall into one of them, and Long John Silver.
I agree that if the original design had been adhered to, it might have been quite spectacular–but who OK-ed it? Apparently, a glass design would have endangered many of the exhibits by exposing them to too much light (wouldn’t/shouldn’t some “expert” have known this?) and the glare from a glass building had the potential of blinding drivers passing by.
“Mars Attacks” seems to have been a complete F***-up and just too typical of multiculural Toronto. I wonder if a guy called Michael Smith would have been given carte blanche to put up an addition not up to building standards and with a number of potential deficits caused from too much light/reflection…One more badly conceived idea that Toronto taxpayers have to pay for–and look at…
