Not Waiting For The Asteroid

Newspaper advertising revenue growth slowed in Q1 2008 by the largest amount since the Newspaper Association of America began measuring ad results back in 1971.”

I wonder if the liberal editorial community even paused to consider what consequences might await before they embarked on the negativity campaign against the US economy in their efforts to damage Bush? Did they really think they could pull that off without slitting their own advertising throats?
The answers are “no” and “yes”, of course.

  1. Excellent news.
Let them die. A little too slow for my tastes, but still, headed in the right direction.
In my culture, we would make them walk the plank. It is faster, but, well, concessions to multi-culturalism must be made.

  2. Any problems are all of their own making, I feel sorry for none of them. Most of them ceased to be “newspapers” when they made the decision to report what they wanted and cheated the public by slanting certain items and omitting others that they considered not in our best interest. You can now pass into the sunset realizing no lasting legacy of value, your selfish and self-serving ways a testament to your destruction of a once noble profession. A retirement in failure that will live with you every day. You will not be missed.

  3. No sympathy from this cowboy!! For decades, the newspapers have doctored the news, statistics and opinions to their favour! I’ve had dozens of letters to the editor scrapped by Liberal publications. Hope the CBC is next in line!

  4. ** Separately, the [New York Times] reported that December ad revenue dropped 25.2%. Excluding an additional week in December 2006, ad revenue declined 12% for the month. **

NEW YORK (AP) — A sharp decline in May advertising revenue for the country’s largest newspaper publishers shows the economic slowdown is adding to the sector’s woes, Goldman Sachs said in a note to investors Thursday.

  5. Hmm… y’know, as “I’m movin’ on up” (albeit to the north side rather than the east side) this coming weekend, this post makes me think that I ought to look into getting into more serious blogging on my free time so as to attract advertisers who’d otherwise waste their money with moonbat MSM outlets, thus getting myself a piece of the (ad revenue) pie…
The future of information/news/opinion dissemination is online, and this means that big MSM outlets have competition from those who aren’t heavily-monied as they are. This is where it’s going.
We have the opportunity to hitch a ride on the change wagon to be part of what’s to come. I see Kate’s already foreseen the blogging thing and carved out a significant place in the blogosphere for herself. I believe that the ability to predict where things are going to go and to work with it all will take some of us from relative obscurity to something bigger, and perhaps with some kind of revenue.

  6. It is well to remember how THESE people re-invent themselves. The Mafia just put on black robes… same game….same fellows
The Teflon Dan type is now called an Activist, usually found on the 9th circuit… protecting the Greens… follow the money!

Newspapers are not nearly so bad as you describe. Indeed they probably do as good of a job in reporting the news as they ever have. Perhaps better.
The world, however, has changed. The internet is one obvious difference. Another is demographics. Canada has never had such a well-educated and experienced population as it has now. When some wet-behind-the-ears reporter, obviously chosen for the position in part because of their looks, keen to bring social justice to the world with freshly minted communications degree in hand, breathlessly informs us of the facts — well, we don’t buy into it the way we used to. We’re jaded and skeptical. We know the tricks, perhaps better than the reporter.
It’s not newspapers that have changed so much as us.

  8. As Kate points out the media has talked down the American economy in order to help the Democrats get elected – a bad economy usually hurts the incumbent party. I also seem to remember a lot of talk coming from Canada, Europe and the Far East about how a faltering American economy would not hurt the rest of the world. Many in these countries seemed gleeful at the prospect of the Americans being put in their economic place. I wonder how they feel now?

  9. Writers like Steyn should have a regular column in a paper. It’s the irony, that the “entertainment” section is more informative and engaging than the the news section………….
meanwhile newspaper mills are shutting down….
hewers of wood are losing jobs….

  10. While my mental health relies on a daily sampling of The Wall Street Journal, the New York and L.A. Times are getting what’s coming. By the way, if you want a letter published, write something at the height of your anger and send it without editing. Believe me, it will get published. I’m much more careful now. Strangers in Sacramento, my auto service manager here and suppliers in New York City have caught me out on letters I forgot I sent. That’s not really how one wants to be immortalized, but I’m just demonstrating how to get letters published. Foolproof.

  11. “they embarked on the negativity campaign against the US economy in their efforts to damage Bush”
    HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa. Priceless.
Repeat it often enough and people will start believing you, Kate.
Or to put it another way, who were “The Media” out to damage in 1998-2000 when “they embarked on the negativity campaign against the US economy” with their endless chants of “the bubble will burst”, “the biggest recession is right around the corner”, “the market cannot sustain this growth”, etc. etc.
Just because some media are as apocolyptic about the economy under a Republican president as they were under a Democratic president does not mean they are (a) “embarking on a campaign… to damage Bush” and (b) wrong about the economy (hyperbolic, sure, as they ALWAYS are regardless of the idiot in the White House, but not wrong).
This Vast Leftwing Media Conspiracy myth is taking on amazing shapes and proportions. Only when you ignore history and ignore three quarters of “The Media” (lumping in non-political news, neutral and conservative, easily three quarters) and ignore every single counter-example can you come up with this whopper that you do.
But all the power to you. It’s your creative writing exercise.

  12. Ha!
Apparently the the marketing guys at the companies that buy media ad time and space are a little more clued in to the whole picture.
I always said that if you do not like what the media is doing tell their advertisers.

  13. I wonder where all the reporterettes, and analyists on tv get all their knowledge about the who, what, when, where and why, when most of them look about 20 something in age. Most were not born when a lot of things happened, were not around when the NEP devastated the west, and eventually even the center of the universe, TO.
Then you have the dan rathers, craigs, newmans etc who were there and shut their eyes. Let’s us add in all the fake stories papers run.
OT but at Jacksnewswatch there is a topic the Green Shift breaking trademark. Poster just called the Green Shift (real one) and was told they are not associated with the liberal party over this. Hey, maybe dion’s claim of revenue neutral will mean libs will be revenue neutral, after a possible lawsuit. How many is that against them now, wouldn’t you think they would learn.

  14. The media started lying about the economy the day “W” took office. All of the usual MSM suspects stumbled down the same path. If that is not a campaign, what is it.

  15. When the unemployed newspaper workers look for another job, they will wonder why this happened to them as they search the online job sites.

  16. No they don’t , never will, never can. They truly think there above the normal human with unparallel wisdom. Infallibility in fact, if not fancy. Its like there much ballyhooed Radio free America . It went bust as well. I don’t think these leeches really understand how loathed they truly are to most people . TV is dying as well. You can find better porn online.
Its not grim at all though. The real talent will out online, as will the freedom to express themselves if we defeat the HRC,s trying to shut us all up.
Its the dawn of direct Product purchase, including entertainment & news that can be verified.
I hope for a revitalization in new novelty as well, public figure, with flair matched with ethical gravitas.
Maybe some class will return to our arts. Liberalism is a hollow shell of itself. So why do they intelligentsia not see threw the sham most others see, except there groupies?. There mad with the narcissism of Utopias.
    This should be their Anthem

  17. Umm Ted
As usual, you failed to back-up your counter arguments with facts. This of course makes your argument worthless as usual.
Hyperbole does not a counter-argument make Teddy.

  18. Uh, Ted, I remember the coverage of the Clinton years a little differently than you do. I remember hearing about the “Clinton Miracle” when the US economy did about like it has the last few years. Unemployment rates were about the same then as now. Now every other story is doom and gloom about the economy and, of course, the old standby “Global Warming.” The liberal media types still brag about Clinton balancing the budget while forgetting that he lowered spending by gutting the military. If Barry Hussein gets in he will be hailed as the second coming.

  19. And now guess what has happened, newspapers in California our outsourcing their editing and layout jobs to India, and a chain in Florida is laying off 1350 people. Wonder how that will affect the Nov elections, newrooms almot empty, who will write the spin.
And not one head of any media outlet or their workers have suggested, hey lets tell the truth, the economy is not sinking, Bush is disliked by some but not hated by all, the war is being won, Obama is dangerous and not the second coming.
Quit supporting the envirowackos, tell the truth re gores money scam. Just maybe you could get some credibility back.
