  1. According to the National Post, Livent “fraudsters” Garth Drabinski and Myron Gottlieb, who are being defended by the Greenspan brothers, are seeking a compassionate judgment after duping investors of some $500 million. There is some worry that the Bernie Madoff decision in the US, that netted 150 yrs., or even the Bernie Ebbers and Jeffrey Skillings debacle that brought 25 yrs., may sway the judge’s decision. Both defendants have been careful not to set foot in the US where charges are pending.
Most spokesmen (lawyers) figure on 4-5 yrs.with

Oh well, I suppose they could use the defense that the judiciary is just anti-Semitic. Going against them is a character reference from one of the worst novelists in Canada; E.L.Doctorow.

  3. Drained Brain: “By being intransigent, Reagan has played directly into the Russians’ hands.”
I don’t think Obama wrote that. It looks as though it belongs to a different article from Obama’s but is continued on the same page as his.
Not that it isn’t the sort of thing that he might well have written, mind you.

  4. Obama wrote it. Read the lower link to NRO and the comments by Andrew McCarthy. The NYT just ran an article about it. They’ve been too busy for the past few months digging up dirt on Sarah Palin to ponder why there was a paucity of bibliographical materials for the editor of the most prestigious law review in the U.S.
Interesting that he didn’t tout this article in either of his memoirs. Interesting also how little his thinking seems to have changed since 1983.

  5. More appeasment to the Islamists. At some point it will reach a point of no return.

In Berger v. City of Seattle, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recently reaffirmed the “bedrock principle” that the protections afforded by the First Amendment are “nowhere stronger than in streets and parks.” This principle was given bluster in a case involving street performers, only one of whom complained that they were being too heavily regulated and could not perform wherever they liked.

  8. Drained Brain: “Obama wrote it. Read the lower link to NRO and the comments by Andrew McCarthy. The NYT just ran an article about it.”
No, he didn’t write it. I read the piece in NRO a couple of days ago. McCarthy doesn’t say anything about the “Reagan has played directly …” sentence.
The continuation of the Obama article is under the heading “mentality – continued from page 3,” while the sentence you quoted is in the continuation of an article apparently on the Greens, whose heading is “Green – continued from page 1.”
There’s plenty to criticize about Obama, but we should make sure that our criticisms are about things he actually did or said.

  9. MJ – By golly, you’re right. And no, it doesn’t make me feel that much better, especially after reading the balance of Obama’s article.
But thank you for pointing that out!

  10. I’m not a great Sarah Palin fan, but she sure would be better for Canada’s interests than Obama.

Staff continued the needle exchange program while the organization around them crumbled.”

  12. Cbc newsworld ran a couple of stories last night that would make an interesting juxtaposition. The first was about the ‘ethnic’ riots in china, not one mention of religion. 13. BREAKING…OBAMA GIVES ASTONISHING INTERVIEW TO AFRICAN PRESS TELLING AFRICANS TO STOP BLAMING WHITEY…IGNORED BY WESTERN PRESS…MUST CREDIT ANONYMOUS COMMENTER!!!
Give credit where credit is due, took several years for me to find something good to say about this wretched affirmative action case, but here it is:
“I think part of what’s hampered advancement in Africa is that for many years we’ve made excuses about corruption or poor governance; that this was somehow the consequence of neo-colonialism, or the West has been oppressive, or racism. I’m not a believer in excuses.
I’d say I’m probably as knowledgeable about African history as anybody who’s occupied my office. And I can give you chapter and verse on why the colonial maps that were drawn helped to spur on conflict, and the terms of trade that were uneven emerging out of colonialism.
And yet the fact is we’re in 2009. The West and the United States has not been responsible for what’s happened to Zimbabwe’s economy over the last 15 or 20 years. It hasn’t been responsible for some of the disastrous policies that we’ve seen elsewhere in Africa. I think that it’s very important for African leadership to take responsibility and be held accountable.”

The many paths a message can take through the Internet make that network robust and efficient—and the envy of those whose job it is to design communications schemes for the far-flung spacecraft leaving Earth each year. After more than a decade of development, NASA is in a rush to have a communications network ready by 2011 that can efficiently carry data between Earth and the multiple probes, rovers, orbiters, and spacecraft exploring the solar system—effectively binding them together to form an interplanetary Internet. Tests performed on the International Space Station last May were the second of three tryouts of the network’s key technologies, called Delay Tolerant Networking, or DTN, protocols.
The DTN protocols will extend the terrestrial Internet into space by overcoming a number of obstacles, including the extraordinary length of time it takes packets to move between separate hops in a deep-space network, the intermittent nature of network connections, and bit-scrambling solar radiation…

Has it ever occurred to you that Not Rejecting a proposal to limit a temperature increase of 2 degrees is less relevant than Opposing such a Motion?

“Bylaw threatens to mow down ~ back-to-nature, meadow-like yard following complaint (Ottawa, Canada)
OTTAWA — Henry and Vera Jones have a dream of a new kind of backyard, one that is an oasis of nature. But that dream is threatened by a City of Ottawa bylaw that appears to suggest they should mow it all down.
For nine months the Constance Bay couple have been planning a new ecologically tuned garden on their half-acre lot on Allbirch Road. No manicured lawns to be watered, fertilized, cut and weeded. Just lots of flowers, trees and vegetables to create a sanctuary for wildlife, especially the kind that pollinate flowers.
They call it the Allbirch Pollinator Garden. The city calls it a violation under bylaw 2005-208.
A few days ago they got a registered letter from the city saying that their property is in violation of the city’s bylaw because they had failed to remove heavy undergrowth, long grass or weeds. The city instructed the couple to cut the long grass on their property by July 8 or risk having the city do the job, then bill them for the work.
    They were shocked.”

  27. In Owen Sound we now have property police, They are going to go block to block to block & issue a repairs needed accompanied by a writ that informs the Taxpayer that if they do not comply within so many days(to be determined by the PP at time of issuance)then the property order will be subject to monetary fines & so forth.
Now don’t get me wrong we have always had municipal by-laws Re: Property management which were enforced by the By-law enforcement officer, However these mostly pertained to neglected Empty properties or landlords where there was neglect & could cause danger to a tennant.
This New By-Law has the ability to tell Say a Senior who may not have the funds to maintain their Own house in a Pristeen shape (that council deems), In other words if the house needs paint or the roof is shody or brick work, garden needs weeded etc.. do you see where iam going with this.
I made a point of writing to council & the city letters to editor that we are Not in Nazi Germany There are many Seniors still in their homes that they worked all the lives for & i might add are paying taxes on still. Are city councilers going to Evict if orders not complied too, Absolutly assidine what have we become, Iam still waiting for a reply.

  33. Maz2, I fail to see what some priest viewing porn has to do on Harper receiving communion at a funeral.
Firstly, it would have been improper for Harper to receive the Host as he is unprepared for the sacrament, and doesn’t likely understand the significance of it. Having done so is nothing to be ashamed of, and I doubt very much he would put it in his pocket. Were he to desecrate (not a wafer) but the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ, as per Christ’s promise, it would be far worse than watching any porn, even the kiddie filth.
