The Bottle Genie

Well, it finally happened. Much of Canadian media broke radio silence on Climategate today. There really wasn’t much choice but to report it, now that Environment Minister Jim Prentice had officially described the allegations as “serious”, coupled with the day-old news that CRU head Phil Jones was “stepping aside” in preparation for his encounter with a double-decker.
As of this evening, there are 23,100,000 Google results for “climategate” – and exactly one on-air report from the CBC.
It’s been 14 days since the cork was pulled from FOIA 2009.zip
And as it turns out, the concerted efforts of a protective mainstream media to ignore the scandal turned out to be worst possible course of events for the University of Anglia’s motley CRU and their supporters in the wealth distribution industry.
They gave us something very powerful – 14 days of time. Time, while scores of bloggers and thousands of readers put in uncountable man hours of dissection and analysis.
Time for those who’d been discussed and copied in the leaked emails to confirm that there was no evidence of tampering.
Time for programmers to sift through Harry’s now famous code line by line, to test it for themselves.
Time for members of the academic community to get their outrage and condemnation on the record, and on their own terms. Time for those who’d been targeted to retell their stories.
Time for opinion columnists and talk radio to break ranks and take on the job their news editors refused to do, to disseminate the facts gathered, checked and analyzed by bloggers to a wider audience.
Time for the comments sections of every online newspaper in the western world to fill with angry demands from their readers to cover the damned story. Not because they were needed anymore, but because we wanted the stupid charade to end.
So when Peter Mansbridge went on the National tonight to admit what he had surely known for days, we didn’t watch to find out what’s contained in FOIA 2009.zip, for we’d read it for ourselves.
We only watched to see if he had.
For perhaps the first time in the history of mass media, the gatekeepers broke a major scandal to an audience fully 10 days ahead of them.
It’s a spin doctor’s worst nightmare.
As I’ve been saying from the beginning, they’re hearing the sound of all hell breaking loose. And as much as it’s being directed at the research institutions and the policy makers following along like so many imprinted penguins, the bulk of public rage has focused on the media.
I don’t think my friends in traditional news gathering truly appreciate what it is they’ve done. I don’t believe they fully comprehend how gravely they have injured themselves, and how they’re driving home the razor into an industry already struggling for survival with abbreviated, dismissive, misleading reports and “denier” and “conspiracy nut” slurs.
The bloggers tried to warn them. The opinion columnists tried to warn them, the talk hosts tried to warn them. Their readers, viewers and listeners tried to warn them.
The news media perfected the business of bombshells. They wind them up, drop them, film the explosion, and move on.
They’re just learning now that we’re in the business of bottle genies.

  1. It’s already underway. The bureaucrats won’t stop now.
The bureaucrats will stop when their bosses the politicians tell them to stop. Do you think that significant taxpayer dollars will be committed to AGW at Copenhagen or any place else after the Climategate debacle?

  2. I answered “yes” to the CTV poll. I hope that’s the correct answer. What a ridiculously worded question.
    *******
TJ and Concerned Canadian, thanks for your kind words re: my letter to CBC. CC, I sadly suspect your analysis is spot on.

  3. The MSM actually believe they can persuade us to subscribe to their news (hind)sites. “Of course Rupert old cobber, here’s my money, now tell me about that Climategate scoop of yours”.

  4. Slightly off-topic. CBC’s Power and Politics had John Duffy from StategyCorp on today to tell us all how bad the Conservatives are doing. This man along with Susan Smith, from BlueSky Strategies, who appears regularly, are both former communication directors with the Liberals. CBC undoubtedly knows this, yet actively portray these people as non-partisan,rarely if ever mentioning their former ‘professional’ background. This is unethical at best.Their agenda, childishly hidden,is to sway the public against PMSH and into the liberal camp. FIRE.THEM.ALL.

  8. I just heard Kate on Adler’s show. Listened to it twice, actually. Very good. Btw at the end, her dismissal of having not listened to Bob Rae in the past few years was great … probably even touched Iggy’s heart!
From the conversation I learned of “Eric S. Raymond”. From his blog I learned of Ken Burnside’s new blog on the subject and from it I found this warmlist. It’s a compilation of all the dreadful things that AGW zealots have said will be caused by a 0.006°C per year increase in temperature. Quite funny!

  9. I knew it Sammy. Just like last year when we were suffering through a horrible winter, they played that stupid movie over and over.
It’s meant to be a slap in the face and an “eff you, deniers!”.

  10. “The naysayers are in a sunset phase with a spectacular climax just before they subside from view. This is a race between common sense and unreality.” …?
    Sounds delusional.

  11. Maybe this was posted before, but there’s a lively discussion going on now at CBC News.
Click on the “Most Recent” comments though and you’ll STILL see a bunch of nimwits who refuse to acknowledge that ClimateGate is an actual news story. In school, what’s lower than an “F”?
Question: Has any polling been done to see if there’s a correlation between these “F students” and NDP voters?

How long since anyone was awarded an “F”? Does it actually even exist?

  14. This makes one wonder how much credibility the governement gives it’s in-house experts at Enviroment Canada….much like the swivellel servants at Justice—these beaurocrats appointed by the LIBRANOs fail to realize the COLD WAR is over and their side lost.
There should be a real bloodbath/inquiry into the politicization of ALL Government agencies.

  15. A poster earlier today chastised the National Post for not covering this story. Interesting . . .
. . . because this very day I read a blistering attack on the AGW boosters by Terence Corcoran in the National Post’s Financial Post Comment (p. FP 11). Re “The Munk Debate: Climate Change”, Corcoran wrote an editorial, entitled “Skeptics score a win against alarmists”. On the same page was a part of the above debate by Bjorn Lomborg, “[AGW] Not mankind’s defining crisis”.
Both of these commentaries were scathing in their refutation of the AGW alarmists. (Yes, it would be helpful if these columns were in the first section of the paper: I only read them because my husband brought them to my attention. . . so I understand the poster’s concern.)

Former NASA climate scientist pleads guilty to contract fraud
    By: Bill Myers
    Examiner Staff Writer
    December 2, 2009
Former NASA manager Mark Schoeberl, of Silver Spring, pleaded guilty to contract fraud Tuesday.
A former top climate scientist who had become of one the scientific world’s most cited authorities on the human effect on Earth’s atmosphere was sentenced to probation Tuesday after pleading guilty to steering lucrative no-bid contracts to his wife’s company.
In addition to a year’s probation, former NASA manager Mark Schoeberl, 60, of Silver Spring, was also fined $10,000 and ordered to put in 50 hours of community service. He admitted in the late summer that he had hid some $50,000 in NASA contracts for a company called Animated Earth, which was run by Schoeberl’s wife, Barbara. Prosecutors alleged that Schoeberl tried to help his wife’s firm for years. When his colleagues balked at giving no-bid contracts to his wife’s firm, Schoeberl pressured them to steer money to his wife through indirect means.
Schoeberl was the chief scientist of the Goddard Space Flight Center’s Earth Sciences Division and the head of the Aura Project, a NASA mission to study the Earth’s ozone layer, air quality and climate. He has written extensively about the depletion of the ozone level, and the influence of humans on global climate change.”

  17. The F students are most likely CBC staff. Too busy spinning to serve their audience. Charging overtime to boot.
That would be our tax dollars at work.

  18. Going beyond the lamestream (who’ve already lost), I plan on using this as a cribsheet for a message to my elected oafs.

  19. Tonight on the six pm national radio news on cbc:
A story about “cannibal” polar bears, attributed to, wait for it, AGW !
    As for climategate……………….waiting, waiting……………waiting…..

  20. I read some of the comments to Monbiot’s ridiculous “blame Canada” article.
One apologetic Canadian lefty certainly let the cat out of the bag with this one. Speaking of the oil workers:
They expect high wages and solid benefits from union jobs that require nothing more than a strong back. I’ve met some of those hard hats from the tar sands – thick as planks and they make a hundred-grand a year. One guy – 22 years old and a Grade 10 drop-out – made a quarter million running a backhoe. I was a decade in university and I don?t make half that. Those Epsilons are laughing at me!
Rarely have the true motivations of the Left – snobbery and envy – been displayed so openly.
“How dare those rednecks make more money than me, a dweeb who spent a decade writing papers about Gender Studies at university! Damn them!”

  21. Just published on Facebook a few minutes ago:
Mr. President: Boycott Copenhagen; Investigate Your Climate Change “Experts”
The president’s decision to attend the international climate conference in Copenhagen needs to be reconsidered in light of the unfolding Climategate scandal. The leaked e-mails involved in Climategate expose the unscientific behavior of leading climate scientists who deliberately destroyed records to block information requests, manipulated data to “hide the decline” in global temperatures, and conspired to silence the critics of man-made global warming. I support Senator James Inhofe’s call for a full investigation into this scandal. Because it involves many of the same personalities and entities behind the Copenhagen conference, Climategate calls into question many of the proposals being pushed there, including anything that would lead to a cap and tax plan.
Policy should be based on sound science, not snake oil. I took a stand against such snake oil science when I sued the federal government over its decision to list the polar bear as an endangered species despite the fact that the polar bear population has increased. I’ve never denied the reality of climate change; in fact, I was the first governor to create a subcabinet position to deal specifically with the issue. I saw the impact of changing weather patterns firsthand while serving as governor of our only Arctic state. But while we recognize the effects of changing water levels, erosion patterns, and glacial ice melt, we cannot primarily blame man’s activities for the earth’s cyclical weather changes. The drastic economic measures being pushed by dogmatic environmentalists won’t change the weather, but will dramatically change our economy for the worse.
Policy decisions require real science and real solutions, not junk science and doomsday scare tactics pushed by an environmental priesthood that capitalizes on the public’s worry and makes them feel that owning an SUV is a “sin” against the planet. In his inaugural address, President Obama declared his intention to “restore science to its rightful place.” Boycotting Copenhagen while this scandal is thoroughly investigated would send a strong message that the United States government will not be a party to fraudulent scientific practices. Saying no to Copenhagen and cap and tax are first steps in “restoring science to its rightful place.”

  22. Colin @ 6:34 p.m. Re “I [Colin] sadly suspect your [my] analysis [of CBC bias and obfuscation] is spot on”.
    Yup.
    Cheers!

  23. If he made $100K running a hoe at the tar sands, he worked his butt off in weather that is too rude to talk about and bugs that armour piercing rounds to bring down.
Pull the plug out of your butt and start putting in long hours in ugly places and you too will make big money….that is if they’ll hire you at all.

  24. In Asian cultures that derive some or all of their mores from the teachings of Confucius, a silent accused is most likely a guilty accused. In the case of AGW, it seems to be correct for many of the low level participants from all cultures.

Thanks for posting this link ivebinnhad – to Lord Moncton’s article. This article says it was a whistle-blower not a hack and the whistle-blower sent the information to the BBC and other media a MONTH before he sent it to the ‘remote website’ where it was picked up and consequently exploded in the blogosphere. This incredibly brave man took a stand against that big corrupt cartel of human hating bedwetters squawking: ‘Climate changie’!, ‘climate changie’! ‘Run, hide – find a hopy dopy give him your first born and have no more carbon emitters (babies) and you will be in the 2nd category – slave of the new world gument’.

    Great post, Kate.

  28. Take a read of Lizzie May’s newest blog post! titled: And nowto discuss those hacked emails.
It includes these gems..’it’s a media trap’..and,’an elaborate sting operation’
Is she talking about the whole GW scam??????????????

  29. F Students at CBC? Remember, Mansbridge (allegedly) didn’t even get his Gr. 12, if I remember correctly. Neither did another prominent CBC journalist (radio), Michael Can’t-remember-his-last-name.

  30. Anyone concerned about Jim Prentice?
Since PMSH is out of town, has he gone rogue?
Has Prentice agreed to be the fallguy in a game of charades?
Or is Prentice just a nut that has come out of hiding, and makes a convenient ‘throw him under the bus’ type?
Just wondering, because he’s definitely reading off the watermelon script.

  31. Prentiss may believe it but Harper doesn’t and won’t let it pass – cross my fingers. Harper played out the clock on Kyoto and it looks like the same thing with Copenhagen. His line is we’ll do it with the Yanks cap ‘n trade bull – but I doubt he believes it himself – it’s just for public consumption. By the time Obama gets his act together to pass it he’ll have squandered his political capital on health care, bails out, Afghanistan etc.
The CBC basically confirmed it the other day (just checking in occasionally to keep an eye on the enemy…) Anyway they state with horror that nothing has been done policy wise in preparation with the great merge to the upcoming American bill. Read between the lines, field marshal Harper is playing an excellent rear guard action.
In the meantime the Europeans and the other starry eyed believers will have mired themselves. The advantage goes to the countries who skated past the swamp.

  32. Sarah has put a stake in the ground for all the wannabe challengers for the presidency in 2012. She is going to lead this issue and she will reap all the benefits. Her stand on this is going to have the loony left going apocalyptic. Pointy heads will be popping but her standing in the polls is going to rocket up. Furthermore, her bold actions are going to clearly establish her as the person to beat.
While I can appreciate that PMSH is playing some version of hide the salami to avoid being tarred and feathered by the CBC, it irks me to no end that no political figure in Canada is standing up and calling bullshit.
Especially seeing the heroes of the day are 2 Canadians, now being vindicated.

  33. NASA hiding climate data
The fight over global warming science is about to cross the Atlantic with a U.S. researcher poised to sue NASA, demanding release of the same kind of climate data that has landed a leading British center in hot water over charges it skewed its data.
Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said NASA has refused for two years to provide information under the Freedom of Information Act that would show how the agency has shaped its climate data and would explain why the agency has repeatedly had to correct its data going as far back as the 1930s.

  34. Sent Today after being told by a Prentice staffer that there is no “harm” in reducing CO2 … that it’s no big deal, that reducing any pollutant is a good thing.
    Mr. Prentice,
I am deeply disappointed that you continue to treat human caused global warming as an established fact, especially in light of the leaked CRU emails and data files.
What has become clear is that the foundational science on which rests the entire IPCC case is incredibly thin, manipulated, and laced with political intrigue. Furthermore, the scientists who actually contribute to the foundational work on which all the rest of the AGW structure sits, are few in number and exactly those individuals caught up in the CRU scandal.
It is impossible that any knowledgeable person could at this time state, with unequivocal certainty, that AGW is an established fact. Only those heavily invested in the belief either through professional work or profit motive would do so, while those who remain dispassionate are in ever greater numbers coming to the conclusion that AGW is merely a theory that rests on thin scientific evidence. Furthermore, taking your cue from a public whose main source of information is the main stream media, is to take your cue from those who are uninformed; you know full well on which side of this debate the MSM has invested itself.
Added to this is the fact that the key scientists within the IPCC have indulged in machinations where they have clearly subverted the peer review process, have fudged their data, and depended on a handful of incredibly poorly done works to justify gross manipulations of the global temperature record. And, even worse, is that the “peer reviewed” work they depend on has been “reviewed” by a very close-knit group of like-minded scientists.
Yet, we find you still professing that the basis on which the IPCC states it’s claims is solid and intact. I am stunned, and ashamed as a CPC member and supporter, that a minister within the CPC government could come to such a reckless opinion in light of the CRU leak. What we have learned in the past week is that the only marginally empirical proof that IPCC models may be correct, the global temperature record, is deeply flawed, manipulated, and a result of massive tinkering. In fact, with the CRU raw data destroyed and lost forever, it is now impossible to ever replicate the CRU work, making it scientifically invalid.
I ask therefore that the CPC government take a neutral position on Global Warming. There is no basis to declare AGW a matter of fact, that human caused CO2 emissions pose a grave threat to humankind. It is in fact irresponsible and dangerous for the CPC to rely on sceptical scientists, American conservatives, Australian liberals, and journalists to make the case for them. The least the CPC could do is take a neutral stand, declaring that since any consensus has clearly come about via manipulation and fudging of the data, that the Canada will take a wait and see position.
Conservatives demand leadership on this issue; not what you have offered. You are clearly playing both sides against the middle and relying on more courageous and honest forces to do your work. It’s time to end the charade. It’s time to get ahead of this issue, instead of having it lead you.

  35. Definition
“let the genie out of the bottle”
to allow something bad or unwanted to happen which cannot then be stopped
    Cambridge Dictionaries Online
    Genie
    Etymology and definitions
The word genie derives from Latin genius, which meant a sort of tutelary or guardian spirit thought to be assigned to each person at their birth. English borrowed the French descendent of this word, génie; its earliest written attestation in English, in 1655, is a plural spelled genyes. The French translators of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights used génie as a translation of jinnī because it was similar to the Arabic word in sound and in meaning. This use was also adopted in English and has since become dominant.
