  7. This has been knawing at me for a long time while this Wisconsin/union stuff has gone on. Why do gov’ts and and others [ie: school boards] collect [ as a deduction at source] and hand over union dues to the union executive? Would there not be a cost savings there if the gov’ts just said to the union, “Collect your own damn dues”.
    I’ve always thought that with most unions, there are a radical minority that holds sway with the rest to be compliant and they have the flow of money to be able to pull it off. I wonder how the rank and file members would take to having the union badgering them for dues, and conversly how unions might be a little more responsive to their members who wouldn’t feel they had to be just sheep to the Cause.
    I’m not nor ever have been in a union, and I have no links to provide ,so I’m just wondering if there are those out there with more knowledge and /or experience who could expand on this.

    The “Triumph of Virtue” statue, which is more than 100 years old and stands in the city’s Queens borough, has been described as sexist by U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras, D-Jackson Heights, because it depicts a nude male figure trampling on a pair of female figures, the New York Daily News reported Friday.
    Weiner and Ferreras have suggested selling the statue on Craigslist to raise funds for the city.
    However, some officials said they do not want the statue, which used to stand at City Hall until it was moved by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia during his 1934-1945 tenure, to be removed from the city.
    “It’s been one of the board’s top priorities for years to have that statue restored,” said Mary Ann Carey, district manager of Community Board 9 in Queens. “We’re not looking to destroy art.””

  12. pkuster If the unions have to collect dues they have to get it from the members. The automatic check off and reimbursment by the State is gone.
    Some members won’t pay, some will give excuses and the unions may have to resort to collection agencies or bankruptcy.

    Engineers have started drilling a hole deep below Newcastle in the search for a renewable energy source.
    The Newcastle and Durham Universities team plans to sink a hole 2,000m (6,562ft) below the planned Science Central site, in the city centre.
