They are. It isn’t called “addiction” for nothing, y’know. The original decision to take something the first time is voluntary, maybe even the first few times. But after that, its a toboggan ride. This progression of addiction to various substances is very well documented, there’s no question about it. The -inevitable- mental disintegration that goes along with cocaine for example is why Coke hasn’t been “The Real Thing” since 1903.
Just think of it as leaving rattlesnakes lying about where they can bite people who aren’t quite careful enough. Would that be a good idea? No.
The question of whether -government- is the best way to handle the problem seems to be the stumbling block. I agree with you that government efforts to date are more harm than good and not worth the money spent. However the answer isn’t to give up, we need to find some other method.

  2. The bans and prohibitions on narcotics were the conservative position on drugs put there to protect, children, among others addiction.
    ~small c conservative
I think a review of the history of those bans and prohibitions will show that they were put in place by eugenicist Democrats?Liberals in the U.S. and Canada, not to protect children but to control visible minorities.

  3. the rat @3:51 ” but geez, he’s getting more than I do (or ever did) and that’s makes me jealous.” – not to be indelicate, but Mr. Estevez-Sheen is paying those goddesses. So, you kmow, it’s always an option.

  4. I am not sure how old you are Phantom but in the my school days drugs were as easy, or easier in some cases, to get than alcohol. Most of us preferred booze to drugs and of the few who regularly got high only a few became addicts. And, like I mentioned before, many of the those had existing issues. You may have a case with hardcore drugs (that I know very little about) but pot, mushrooms etc. seem to carry no higher risk of addiction than alcohol.

According to stats, I think we have. I read that up to 1/3 of adults are on anti-depressant. Our society seems to be unable to exist without mood enhancing drugs, legal or illegal. Seriously though, pre-existing mental instability and/or family dysfunction is probably the root of most addicts problems.

I agree, but I wouldn’t discout boredom – yes, loneliness and boredom – and horrible surroundings either (and I don’t just mean the “ghetto”, I mean whatever “friends” Lindsay Lohan etc. has got sliming around her).
A University friend of mine who’d taken more than her fair share of everything in high-school (I didn’t know her then) once told me that everyone she knew who took drugs came from families that more or less encouraged it (she was thinking specifically of a mutual aquaintance who used to smoke pot with her mother). There are exceptions, but basically based on what I’ve seen I can’t disagree; most kids who do a lot of drugs experience parental indifference, tacit approval or even encouragement.
Isn’t Sheen Sr. meant to have had a coke-induced heart attack on the set of Apocalypse Now? Charlie would have been about 14 at the time. Hollywood is clearly an utterly toxic environment.

  8. How much cocaine did Charlie Sheen do?
Enough to kill Two and a half men…..

    Clever lol

  9. I’m no expert (2 semesters of Psychology way back in the day, plus intermittent reading since then) but I really think Charlie Sheen has some very serious mental illness issues. Manic depressive…narcissist…psychotic??? Check out this brief article at Wiki (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychotic) on Psychosis, the symptoms and causes, and see if it doesn’t really seem to fit Charlie Sheen.
While I’ve never cared for Charlie Sheen’s politics or acting, I take no satisfaction in my remarks. Mental illness -and I have my own battle with chronic depression- is living one’s life in a dark to pitch black place. Sadness and pain … I hope he reaches out for professional help.

  10. Hollywood is ground zero of dysfunctional families, Black Mamba. They are not just diseased but contagious. Most actors seem to get sucked into the party lifestyle.
Thank Gaia for the internet because that’s what I do when I get utterly bored. What can I say, I am easily entertained.

  11. Oz – Are you saying Prohibition was put in place by eugenecists? Were laws against disorderly conduct put in place by eugenecists?
My point is: the culture of the US in the ’50’s was very conservative and, broadly speaking,
” alternative ” lifestyles were frowned upon. The default position of such cultures would not be permissive, vis a vis narcotics.

  12. I watched about 5 minutes of his Sheen’s Korner, which is roughly the same exposure that I’ve had to his #1 sitcom. Sheen’s Korner feels more authentic.

    Bread and circuses…
    While Libya burns.

  14. Adults should be free to destroy themselves as long as they aren’t harming others and taxpayers aren’t on the hook for harmful personal decisions.
Causing many others to lose their jobs isn’t harming others?

  15. Spike TV had a lot of ads regarding his ‘best’ moments.
Why are they on this guys case? Lady Gaga does weirder things.

  17. Dave in Pa – “Mental illness -and I have my own battle with chronic depression”
I feel for you, it is a very dark place – but there is hope, beyond medicine. I know, my wife went through it and beat it.

Good point. I’ve always wondered the same thing.
The left jump all over industrialists, inventors and all kinds of self made entrepreneurs like they are bottom feeding thieves that owe their wealth to the world. Yet they let mostly talentless schizophrenic side show freaks live and be worshiped like pharaoh’s and goddesses.
Only goes to show what a messed up society we’ve become. The jesters and the clowns rule the court while the kings and queens are persecuted for adding real value to society.
