  1. Pretty good column by someone who is a fan of Obama who now thinks he is a failure as POTUS:
    http://truthonthemarket.com/2011/09/21/obamas-fatal-conceit/
For a while now I have felt their was a chance that Obama would decline a run for a second term. Week by week I have felt that that possiblity is growing. Today I would say it’s between 40:60 and 50:50. If the economy really tanks it becomes a near certainty that he will blame bush and GOP obstinacy and try and play the sacrificial lamb of the left.
And then he’ll retire to a leisurely life of hobnobbing with the rich and TelePrompTer readings at universities and general electric meetings – the toast of Penn and Damon and Baldwin.

  2. well , lev , you never know , its about 300 kilometers lower tonight than it was last night b ut its cruising at about 7.6 kilometers per second so maybe the north 40 .

  3. EDB, what happened to my comment for Reader’s Tips last night that was, apparently for some innocent html reason to do with the link, held for your approval? Never showed up!
So, I’ll try again. I think some of our SDA folks will find it worthwhile:
Some incredible stuff on YouTube! Here’s the TinyUrl link to a piece of music from about 1,400BC. tinyurl.com/4yvvqxu
It was found by archeologists on a tablet, written in cuneiform. About 5 minutes long, I found it an enjoyable, pretty compelling piece of music. The recording artist played it on a modern model of the ancient stringed instrument used for this. Under the video is a brief essay describing how, with other archeology-obtained knowledge, the music was interpreted and played by the very talented musician who recorded it.
The song is believed to be the oldest complete piece of music in human record! Isn’t it amazing that, with the efforts of a few archeologists, a talented musician -and computers- we are able today to enjoy a complete piece of music written about 3,400 years ago?!

  4. My apologies, Dave, I forgot to check the filter last night. I just looked now, and what happened was your URL contained both “&” and “href”. When both are present, the comment will always get caught up in the filter.
With YouTube URLs there is, fortunately, an easy way to get through the filter: simply remove the “&” and everything after it in the URL. So, for example (I’m leaving out the “a href” here so that the entire URL, and not a live-linked word, will be visible), the URL –

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viMbnj_Ei2A&feature=related

    – will get through the filter in this form:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viMbnj_Ei2A

  5. Synchrodox: exactly. If he steps down HRC jumps in – sprints to the centre, names her husband as economic advisor in waiting and all of sudden we have a race.

  6. EDB, thanks for your reply and explanation. I figured it had to be something geekish like that, as there was no spam or naughty word content.
BTW, I downloaded that video, converted it to mp3 for saving in My Music. It’s definitely a keeper.
(For anyone interested, there’s a very nice, user friendly freeware app called Youtube Downloader, at www dot youtubedownloader dot com. It downloads flash videos from YouTube and other sites, then gives you the option to convert it to Windows .wmv or mp3 or mov format, at different levels of quality and therefore file size. Between all the available formats, there’s compatibility with PCs, tablets, smartphones, etc.)

Re: Economy. Is it me or….I’ve noticed in the past few days that the CDN media seems bored with prosperity. Remember when we were kids sitting at home on a rainy day, things were going well but and we’d do something outrageous just to break the boredom. Like throwing a cat in the clothes dryer!!
    Twas just a thought!

“Greece’s Middle Class Revolt against Austerity”
“Small business owners in Greece have long been the backbone of the economy and reliable taxpayers in a country where tax evasion is rampant. That, though, is now changing.
Self-employed workers like Angelos Belitsakos have had enough of rising taxes and have begun to revolt.
The people who could ultimately give Greece the coup de grace are not the kind to throw stones or Molotov cocktails, and they have yet to torch any cars. Instead, they are people like 60-year-old beverage distributor Angelos Belitsakos, people who might soon turn into a real problem for the economically unstable country. Feeling cornered, he and other private business owners want to go on the offensive. But instead fighting with weapons, they are using something much more dangerous. They are fighting with money.”

    “Riot erupts in South China”
“HONG KONG — Thousands of people have attacked government buildings in southern China in protest at land sales, a newspaper reported on Friday, the latest outbreak of trouble in the economic powerhouse of Guangdong.
Witnesses in Lufeng city said the protests, in which around a dozen residents were hurt, were triggered by the seizure of hectares of land and their sale to property developer Country Garden for 1 billion yuan ($156.6 million), Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported.
Directing their ire at the local seat of government and attacking buildings including the local Communist Party headquarters and a police station, the angry mob in some cases used “sticks, bricks and their fists,” the Post reported.
Roads were also blocked, and a businessman said several thousand villagers had joined demonstrations outside government headquarters since Wednesday.”

“The burning question: Where has all money pumped in over the past decades gone? It’s certainly not gone to the population at large. The Greek people are not unwilling to save – they simply can’t any more.
All the progress made in protecting workers’ rights the past few decades has been reduced to rubble. The gates to exploitation have been flung wide open; sadly, exploitation by small firms is often a necessity for survival. If it turns out that the EU troika are enjoying dinner with the Greek politicians at €300 per head, there remains only the question of when the Greek pressure cooker will have the lid blown off.
What happens in and to Greece should serve as a deadly serious warning to all of Europe. A party that would have put “reasonable austerity” onto its election manifesto would never have been elected. Addressing debt reduction is necessary, so long as it remains bearable to a degree and is not bound up with financial genocide.”
    “Greece”
    “A financial genocide”
“The loose talk coming from the highest politicians all across Europe about the “lazy” and “spendthrift” Greeks, some of which chatter can hardly be surpassed for stupidity, cannot go unchallenged.
For the last 16 months I have had a second home in Athens and have witnessed the dramatic situation on the ground. A common complaint is that the austerity plan will never catch on because tax revenues are falling, and the willingness of the Greeks to cut back is being called into question. Surprise, surprise! Well, here are a few facts:
    • Pay cuts and pension cuts of up to 30 percent.
    • Minimum wage sinking to 600 euros per month.
    • Dramatic price hikes in the last 15 months (100 percent for fuel oil and petrol, 50 percent for electricity, heating, gas, public transport).
    • One third of the country’s 165,000 commercial firms shut down; a third can no longer pay wages. In Athens, thousands of yellow signs with “Enoikiazetai” – “For Rent” – in red letters.
    • In the midst of this calamity, consumption (the Greek economy was always strongly consumer-oriented) has caved in dramatically. Double-earners, those who used to bring home 4,000 euros to their families, have suddenly been reduced to 400 euros each in unemployment benefits, which are paid out only after a delay of several months.
    • State officials or officials in quasi-state enterprises, such as Olympic Airlines or hospitals, have been getting no salary for months and are being put off until October – or “next year”. The record is currently held by the Ministry of Culture, where many employees who worked on the Acropolis have not been paid a salary for 22 months. As they protested this (peacefully!) in a demonstration that closed off the Acropolis, they were promptly provided for in abundance – but only in tear gas.”

  10. Anyone seen that it was the Canadian delegation that was FIRST to walk out on amerdinnerjacket’s speech at the UN?
I have a screen capture of CBC;s headline stating this. That headline, and any like it….seems to have gone down
the memory hole. All reporting now state that it was the American’s who had the cajonas to lead the stampede of countries who left. That Obama is sooo dreamy.

  11. Canada is the country that initiated the tradition of walking out on the baboon known as I’m A Dinner Jacket.
This year Canada took it a step further and didn’t even bother to show up.
So I believe that CBC headline was indeed incorrect.

“Liberals plotting a challenger rather than sticking by a failed leader”
“President Obama is facing an internal revolt. Liberals are openly considering a primary challenge for the Democratic presidential nomination. Ralph Nader, a big-government maverick and former Green Party candidate, recently called for a group of left-leaning Democrats to run. If a prominent opponent emerges, Mr. Obama’s re-election efforts would be fatally crippled.
It is not just conservatives who are angry with Mr. Obama. Radicals are also seething. They view him as shallow and inept. After once deifying him as the liberal messiah, they feel betrayed – by both his incompetence and his deviations from socialist priorities.
In their eyes, Mr. Obama has abandoned key leftist causes.”

“*Barack Obama – Narcissist or Merely Narcissistic?”
“The “small people”, the “rank and file”, the “loyal soldiers” of the narcissist – his flock, his nation, his employees – they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder.”

“Solar panel installer SolarCity said on Friday it was the second company in as many days that will not get finalization of U.S. government loan aid by a September 30 deadline.
The Department of Energy informed SolarCity of its inability to close the loan 48 hours ago, blaming increased paperwork resulting from a Congressional investigation into the Department of Energy’s $535 million loan guarantee awarded to bankrupt solar company Solyndra, SolarCity said in a letter to the Republican lawmakers heading the probe.
The DOE loan guarantee program, which is under fire for missing signs its first recipient of loan aid, Solyndra, was bleeding money before it went bankrupt, has nearly $9 billion in loans still to finalize.”
