  1. Probably the worst winds I have seen in the last 10 years in terms of speed and duration. Local weatherbug weather station is showing sustained winds of nearly 70 km/h with gusts of over 90 km/h and it’s been like that for most of the day (just east of Calgary). Most of the homes in my community have lost shingles, some I would say 10 – 15% of their roof. Hopefully, it lets up soon.

  2. It’s the fall tumble weed rut! It’s been advised that everyone stay indoors as they are an unpredictable creature that has been known to scratch and claw its way to freedom if cornered.Stay safe everyone

  3. Agreed JimmyF. We’ve had sections of our fence blown down with fence posts snapped at our condo complex in the city. It’s letting up a bit, but still pretty intense.

  4. All summer I wished for dead weeds on my lawn and garden, no luck. Thanks to our brain dead voters, dead weed Dalton McGuinty was re-elected, he loves weeds so much we are forbidden the use anything that will kill them. Lawns are taken over by clover and noxious weeds and the a-choos are heard far and wide around the province. The drug stores are making a mint on antihistamines.

  5. For those that aren’t aware, the police actually closed downtown Calgary to all traffic. Windows were getting blown out, apparently, and the debris was quite an issue, from what I understand. Outside the city, semis and buses were getting blown over, and Hwy 2 has had issues all day. To say nothing of what this system is doing in the mountains.
But yes, that’s about the lamest picture they could’ve used. Would’ve been like using a picture of a few flurries to represent the “great” ice storm. Any number of tweets could probably have been found with pictures of uprooted trees and whatnot.

We do exterior restoration for insurance companies, at this time of year the weather dictates our work patterns. We called the game this morning based on the conditions…as We always do..

  7. Wicked winds? Only people can be wicked or evil. Must be a journalism major writing the headline. Very strong winds though, in Eastern Ontario we usually only get to 100km/h when a dying hurricane tracks this way.
LizJ, take a trip to Quebec in the spring and buy all the herbicides you want. The weed killers are not locked up in a glass case and you are not handed one of the mandatory sheets telling you that you can’t use herbicide for aesthetic reasons. It’s as if taxpayers are free to do as they want. Pour the good stuff into an empty container for liquid fertilizer to fool the busy-bodies and spray away.
For those of you in the freer provinces reading this, it is illegal to use herbicides to get rid of weeds in Dolt-on’s Ontario. Apparently dandelions have rights or something.

  8. The weed depicted is designed to move when the wind blows – that’s how it spreads it’s seed to new locations. Showing it is like showing a flag rippling in the breeze.

  9. We lost a 37yr old pine today! It had one of those incidents when it was young where the top got cut off,it grew a new top by growing out 90 degrees to the trunk, then up. I never knew until this happened. Anyway, that provided a relatively weak point that broke the tree. I spent a few hours with a Saws-all cutting it out of the trees where it got caught up and then limbing it and making logs. What a PIA!
Hope the rest of you fared better!

  10. We get storms like that all the time here in Victoria. 70 km/hr is pretty mild storm wise. I don’t think we’d get a wind warning over that.

  11. Where did you get 70km/hr from?
Wind warnings are generally 90km/hr(+/-) sustained or gusts over 100km/hr, per Environment Canada policy, not 70km/hr. There were hurricane-force winds scattered around here today. And when a fire starts on the dry prairie in these conditions…there is now a wildfire alert in Lethbridge county.

  12. LRT down, downtown closed, semis blown off the road at Airdrie. Windows out at TD Square.
Lawn chairs knocked over in Victoria

  13. Sure looks flat out there.

Yeah, Halifax too. Stupid things everywhere.
