Meet the Whanganui. You might call it a river, but in the eyes of the law, it has the standings of a person.

Oh, for the love of crumb cake!
Go with the flow…ride the tide…get vapid in the rapids…
At my ripe old age of 35, nothing suprises me now.
Osumashi…crumb cake is fattening…and water intensive…just say’in…
So, if the river overflows and creates a real mess, we can sue it ? How does it get to court ? How will it pay a defence lawyer. Enquiring minds want to know.
The more I see how sick this Civilization gets the more I figure it ought to crumble under its own stupidity. Now you have Judges making water ways into humans like they are gods. With divine rights.
First corporations are people, now rivers too?
I get it. When somebody drowns, the family should be able to sue and get a default judgement. Can they then sell the water or dam it for hydro. I am not sure how they apply consistency.
I’m in awe of Australia’s easternmost state.
Just wait until the Whanganui takes out a student loan. And demands contraceptives. And depends on arts grants. And votes twice.
The lunatics are in charge of the asylum (UN is in charge of bureaucrats who are running politicians). Truth is treason in the Empire of lies making Common Sense/rational thinking a crime.
If corporations can be people, why can’t rivers?

peterj, very good point. If a river misbehaves, then it should be imprisoned within a dam. Also, how does one tell if a river is insane? Does one dump industrial quantities of antipsychotics in a deranged river to try to settle it down?
Also, what happens when the river decides it doesn’t want to just flow into the ocean and would rather turn into a lake? Then the people who build the dam in response would just be abiding by the wishes of the river.
Likely the moonbats who came up with this moronic idea never thought it through. One can only hope that they all get swept away to their deaths in a sudden flood when they go to communicate with the river. The only people who I can see benefitting from this idiocy are lawyers who will get rich arguing the minutae of fluvial personhood in self-parodying courts who make Swift’s big and small enders look sane.
ibby…did you get swept up in the current..?..
…or drown in the pools..?..
And usually these same people won’t grant any personhood or status to life growing in the womb. Even a pro-choice type should be able to see that’s pretty stupid.
“If corporations can be people, why can’t rivers? ”
Another lberia failed attempt at cleverness. Corporations are “people’ in a narrowly defined legal sense. If you want to grant that status to a river, be prepared to have it be held liable for any damage it causes. I assume you can see that won’t make any sense.
Dear World:
I am Whanganui and now that my status before the law has finally been recognized I wish to sue the physical entity know as the Land of New Zealand and all its inhabitants for illegally obstructing my cultural practices as quaranteed under the UN charter of rights and freedoms.
You see, I am part of the Pacific family of waters, an entity still not recognized with legal rights as I have now been blessed. As part of this family both physically and culturally, we practice a ritual known as the rain dance whereby water is evaporated, condenses and falls as rain.
However, the entity known as the Land of New Zealand impedes this process and forces me to slowly snake through its filthy body before finally spitting me, all full of silt, debris and whatnot back into my family.
I say, would you accept this behaviour amongst people? Would you accept that other individuals could fill you with all sorts of debris (natural and unnatural) simply while you went about your normal cultural practices. If you are not a Democrat, you would probably say no.
In way of restitution, I would kindly request that New Zealand be relocated to some other part of the world. How this is managed I care not, just get it done.
Yours Truly
Whanganui
Ibby and ok are actually this judge. I blame Twitter, the whole world has become twits, twits everywhere, president twit, judicial twits, NDPEE twits, twits to the left of me twits to the right. Some judges did far to much drugs when they were in law school.
The law won’t do for the unborn what they’ve done for a souless fluvial sedimentary system. A system that already has a set of natural laws that govern how it “lives”.
The unborn has a real heart…the unborn can grow up to develop souls…the unborn need humane laws from humans to govern that they can live.
Bunch of Earth-firster hypocrites creating yet another poison to mankind and our place on this planet.
Someone will marry it and live rapidly ever rafter.
Hopefully the Iwi and the Whanganui find out very, very, soon just what fun they are going to have now that they have let the leftards into their “lives”.And just what does a Whanganuian look like?
Hey, I want to be recognized as a river. How do I go about that?
“In 2008, Ecuador passed similar ruling giving its forests, lakes, and waterways rights on par with humans in order to ensure their protection from harmful practices.”
I just hope to hell none of the Wset Coast enviro-loonies have read this,or next thing you know, they’ll be applying for the Fraser to be granted “personhood”.
Good point,peterj!
They usually make these kind of announcements on low news days.
In the absence of reason, pantheism (of green narratives) has become the basis for Western theocracy. I used to work with a mad Kiwi and can see how this could come about.
Dilute the meaning of rights by applying them to inanimate objects and pretty soon your rights mean very little too, just another subject of state control.
Guys, corporations are practically persons in the eyes of the law in the US. Seeing as they are bent on making profit without any regard for possible harm they might cause to the environment or individuals, unless they are expressly roped in by strict laws, they are far more dangerous to us than rivers.
Me… I’d rather give a river rights than some megacorp who will screw me over to benefit a few.
You should watch The Corporation. Good Canadian doc. If only to mock it as leftist propaganda. But who knows? You might actually learn something.
