Reader Tips

“Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and gave him triumphal processions. Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the ‘new, wonderful, good society’ which shall now be Rome’s, interpreted to mean: more money, more ease, more security, more living fatly at the expense of the industrious.” — Marcus Tullius Cicero

As will not be a surprise to SDA regulars, the “Math Is Hard” crowd are coincidentally also not very knowledgeable about history. So tonight, as a “teachable moment”, we offer a brief lesson on Bread and Circuses (and learn that eventually 175 days each year became public holidays).
You’re welcome to leave some new reader tips or you can just focus your energies on getting a good rest.

  1. A rather frustrating night. What disturbs me most is the number of defeatist posts I’ve noted. The battle has just begun and, in defense of liberty, extremism is no vice.

  2. Regretting not pursuing a career in sales-seems people will buy into anything.
The only way to prevent the growing of future socialists is too change their soil-it’s the educational system that has been tenderly growing the entitlement for nothing, global multicultural utopia for the last 50 years. Use to be just universities, now the indoctrination begins in nursery school.

  3. Where is John Galt? So the 47% that don’t pay taxes plus illegal immigrants voted for free cell phones at the expense of some one else. The remaining 53% that pay the taxes should all become John Galt. Whatever are the 47% going to do when obama runs out of other peoples money, and their “free” obamacare doesn’t get them the expected medical help because they’re #54,773,838 on the waiting list.

    “Eurozone’s economic gloom deepens”
“LONDON — The fourth quarter has so far brought no improvement in the fortunes of most of Europe’s economies, which now risk shrinking more than previously expected, gloomy data showed on Tuesday.
Purchasing managers indexes (PMIs), which gauge the activity of thousands of companies worldwide, showed eurozone businesses endured their worst month in October since June 2009, with little hope of a turnaround coming soon.
The eurozone relies heavily on Germany, its largest economy, to generate growth.
Business activity there shrank at faster pace last month and new data show industrial orders in September plummeted at a far faster rate than expected.
PMI compiler Markit said its latest survey was consistent with the eurozone economy shrinking at a quarterly rate of around 0.5%.”

  5. It would appear that the rule of law means nothing to a sizable percentage of Americans. Obama’s win is when the beacon of the free world ran out of batteries and descended into darkness. Forget the healing of the planet and the rise of the oceans. We’re looking at more stick it to Whitey and give me free stuff on the part of a sizable chunk of the population who don’t contribute to either America’s can-do, love-your-neighbour-as-yourself culture or coffers. The barbarians aren’t at the gates, they’re inside and they’re in for a long squat.
From squeaky clean to down and dirty. This is a sad day for our neighbours to the South. I’m not saying friends or allies because, under Oblahblah, we can no longer count on American friendship or support.

  7. Even if Obama does nothing over the next four years to expand the role of the state, it expanded enough in the last four years to make things positively hellish for the next decade or so. A Romney victory would have bought the American economy some valuable time, as Romney might have convinced America’s creditors that they might just be able to pay off all those debts. Not so after last night. Democrats turned out in much larger numbers than expected in order to preserve and defend not liberty but the entitlement state. As it stands today, 51% of Americans desire something for nothing at the expense of the other 49%, and are willing to ignore the math that tells them that this is clearly impossible.

  8. I told you so.
I told you that stupid country will elect the deeply entrenched mole for the 2nd term.
But you were enthusiastically musing the notion that Romney could win.
Not with the elector system, stupid!

  9. Question: Did they count the military vote?
I would be cautious, because the Comander and Chief does not have their back. Never forget Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty in Benghazi and his seven hour plea for help – rejected by all authority over him.
“Not knowing exactly what was taking place, the two SEALs set up a defensive perimeter. Unfortunately Ambassador Stevens was already gravely injured, and Foreign Service officer, Sean Smith, was dead. However, due to their quick action and suppressive fire, twenty administrative personnel in the embassy were able to escape to safety. Eventually, these two courageous men were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers brought against them, an enemy force numbering between 100 to 200 attackers which came in two waves. But the stunning part of the story is that Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty killed 60 of the attacking force. Once the compound was overrun, the attackers were incensed to discover that just two men had inflicted so much death and destruction.” SDA Oct 27, 2012
I think the Comasnder and Chief is afraid of their vote if it became public – it would show what support the military has for him – sad.

  10. I’m not a defeatist by any lengths but I strongly suspected a win for Obama. The polls leading up to the election were very close. This is why I never made any predictions amongst my friends about who I thought would win. Too close to call.
But then I started reading all the comments and tweets online from democrat supporters. From threats of violence to openly admitting they were going to commit voter fraud by voting more than once in more than one state. I knew then that the fight was gonna be difficult for the GOP. And then reading about dems openly campaigning INSIDE polling stations, voter intimidation by Black
Panthers, and election staff interfering with the election I was certain that all was lost long before the first results came in.
This election became third world really quick with all the election shenanigans that went on. But somehow I don’t think any of that will factor in. There won’t be an investigation and Obama will carry on ruining his country while the media applauds and the welfare and union parasites rake in their entitlements.

  12. Robert L;
The scale of voter fraud that you suggest did not appear evident last night. The GOP was not reporting it. Blacks, Hispanics, youth and entitlement beneficeriaries won the day. Both the Demos and the GOP were all talking about how well the Demo orginization performed in the field.
Sadly if some of the GOP and PAC money had been spent on Finance 101 instead of TV ads the outcome might have been different.

  13. Interesting dove tailed comments from LJ and Maz2-
“what will they do when Obama runs out of other peoples money….” and “the eurozone relies heavily on Germany…..”
For now China would appear to be Obama’s “other peoples money” but he who plays the tune calls the tune and how long will it be before Germany cannot or will not be Europe’s sugar daddy. In both cases the results will be inevitable.

  16. The quote from Cicero is unduly kind to Obama. Caesar was a real leader; his soldiers worshipped him
and were prepared to die for him. He himself was brave and skilled in the use of weapons.
He also was a capable administrator and legislator, and would no doubt have proved a good Chief Magistrate.
Finally, on matters amatory, he was quite the opposite of being a pooftah.

  17. Do you have a contemporary source for that Cicero quote? It really doesn’t sound like something Cicero would say.

  19. “Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome”
    Correct.
But in couple of years majority of Americans will blame others — Obama, China, Middle East or somebody else for their troubles. And not many will blame themselves.
Just like people of the Middle East or people in some European countries.
    ******
Further – I am reading blogs from other countries and before elections some of these people were hoping that Obama wins. Why? Because then USA will finally destroy itself.

I think that conservatives (or Tea Party) need to wake up and start working very, very hard. Because it is never too late. It is too late only if one believes that everything is lost.

  20. The numbers are in:
12 million fewer total votes than in 2008, and Romney gets 2.5 million LESS votes than McCain did in 2008??!!
WTF’s up with that…other that it speaks to the lethargy of a sleep-walking Sominex Nation, which is too lazy and overfed on borrowed handouts, to rouse itself from its stupor to save itself from the walking over a cliff. The analogies to the fall of Rome in a number of posts herein seem quite apt. You guys are seriously f@#$ked.
