Blog Notes

I’m sure there will be issues. Let me know in this thread if you see something, please. Obviously there is theme related stuff that needs to be tuned and I’ll get on that.
Cheers,

  1. It’s working just dandy.
Just fix the Captcha(still too hard to read sometimes) and it’s perfect.

  2. Font, spacing and some colour issues on the fonts, maybe thats intentional? If so guess we will get used to it.

  3. Hi Lance, I like the font. The size is smaller and harder to read on the laptop. Have pity on those of us with older eyes! Thank you for all the fine work you and Kate and the others do to make SDA the best!

  4. AGW RIP.
“His decision removes from the climate debate one of the most prominent and authoritative voices calling for the reining in in greenhouse gases.”
    …-
    “BLOW TO PROGRESS
Pachauri Quits UN Climate Panel After Harassment Allegation”
“The IPCC had to backtrack on findings in its 2007 report overestimating the rate at which glaciers in the Himalayan Mountains were melting.”

  5. Oceans of empty space at the sides of webpages is beyond annoying. Progress and all that I suppose…

  6. “Oceans of empty space at the sides of webpages is beyond annoying.”
ctl +++ will increase the font and fill the page.
if you like to squint use ctl —

  7. For just about any browser, you can set what the default fonts are and their sizes.
That said, SDA’s layout and theme have never been good, and this new change is significantly worse. I don’t know what the motivation for not using modern web technologies and software is, but surely there’s a way to get clean, minimalist mobile friendly layout that doesn’t also look like ass.
And for heaven’s sake, captcha does not have to suck this hard. It really doesn’t.

  8. Links no longer open in a new page/tab. I much prefer the previous setting where links opened a new tab.

  9. I always liked that a new window would open when clicking a new story. It’s easy to X out rather than always having to back click.

  10. I’m almost certain you’re wrong about losing the dusted gopher which used to adorn the mast head – this device alone was probably responsible for thousands of ulcers, fainting attacks and nagging nightmares in the PETA-Hoplophobe cults.
See if you can maybe bring back the gut-shot gopher – maybe as a cursor?

  11. It’ll go back to the way it was. The old theme (fonts, colour, styles, images, sidebars, banners) was overwritten and it needs to be rebuilt, that’s all.
None of what you see will remain. Kate likes the old one and that’s where well end up.
The old look was a modification of a supplied theme, as such, the upgrade overwrote it. Once we’re tuned, I’ll export it as a custom theme, and then it won’t overwrite again.

  12. I’m seeing a plain black text on white background with sans serif font and no graphics at all. Needs some work.

  13. Re the missing gopher – me too.
Re the Captcha, I usually don’t have a problem with it, but something more fun like from “Prove You Are A Human” would be welcome to me.
And didn’t there used to be a “donate” button where we could send Kate a few dollars to defray expenses?

  14. At the moment there is no header, but the tagline is back… 🙂 retooling blog formats is oh, so much fun. I have one in which IE and firefox interpret the colour scheme differently – polar opposites – so what you see in one browser may not be what you see in another…

  15. The gopher was symbol to the SDA site. Miss it!! But everything else looks good. Change is sometimes good and I am an old folk having been a regular redear since 1990’s. Daily read. Thanks Kate and Lance.

  16. I’m really glad you’ll be going back to your own modification of the supplied theme. The most annoying thing – times a thousand – about the overwrite is the unalterability of the excessively stretched-out length (left to right) of lines of text in the comments and posts. If you appropriately size your window for viewing other sites and then switch tabs to SDA, the end of the sentences completely disappear off the page on the right hand side. If you widen the tab to make all text viewable on SDA and then switch tabs to another site, a short paragraph there can turn into just one or two left-to-right lines of text, which is not only unaesthetic but effects comprehension.

  17. Things have changed here since my above post.
Too much red. With respect, red is the color of: Liberals, commies, and flags that wave in front of things that convey the message danger or anger. Maybe not a good color for a reply button, that anger part.
I too miss the gopher and the Road Kill diaries part. is sorta explained what the title SDA was about.
I really miss hitting the comments button and having comments open in a new window. Now I have to right click and select ‘new window’. I never liked ‘tabbed browsing’ and have it turned off in my browser options.

  18. In regards to the new look, if this is the new look, FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL

  19. I’m confused… and the new layout looks horrid, no title seen, the old stuff is on the wrong side of the page, and captcha is still defectively hiding

  20. If there is ever an SDA comments Hall of Fame, this should be a charter entry.
I do miss the dead rodent though…

  21. Hate it. Hate everything about it.
But, then tomorrow I will start getting used to it.
And after a while, I will learn to like it.
    But right now?
    Hate it.
