A Senate committee voted Tuesday to delete a so-called escalator tax on alcohol from the federal government’s budget, defying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s insistence that only the elected House of Commons has authority over budgetary matters.
Good. The Senate doing the job they’re paid to do for the betterment of the country with a less partisan and ideological focus. Let’s hope the Senate as a block approves this amendment because no gov’t should be allowed to have this type of perpetually increasing tax.
Now, if only the Senate could do something about the out-of-control spending by the Liberal gov’t. I guess we have to get them to actually vote first.
Oh, and PM Trudeau? Get stuffed, you’re temporary and the Senate is not.
I maintain that politicians are so out of touch with reality that they have literally no concept of the source of tax dollars. It’s like the act of being elected causes brain damage.
Seems like only yesterday that the liberals were asking the premiers not to tax his precious soon to be legal pot.
In British Parliamentary tradition, only the House of Commons can initiate or amend money bills. The UK went further. For a money bill, House of Lords approval is un-necessary or automatic after 30 days.
“It’s like the act of being elected causes brain damage.”
It is also like mass brain damage explains electoral decisions.
Yepper! Scar; look how well Britain is being Governed. One has to believe or at least guess the reason for “World Without Borders” is actually trying to find a Process which allows the”Old Money in Europe-including Britain-and remnant Royalty to get Their Ass-ets out of Europe.
Once the Caliphate and/or Ottoman empire(s) are in a Majority Voter Position the Previous “Old Money” culture Ass-ets centered around the Mediterranean Sea will soon Claim the Jewelry etc. back.
unfortunately the senate can
I’m not sure what the worst part of this bill is, the average-joe screwing escalator tax on alcohol or the pork-park creating infrastructure bank. Both are insults to Canadian tax payers especially the middle class guy Trudeau was going to protect. The senate should stop the creation of the infrastructure bank. It’s clearly a place to park the pork that will be doled out to Liberal supporting corporations and consultants. Much of it will end up back in Liberal pockets by way of campaign donations.

Big deal. The Senate will send their budget amendment back to the Commons, which will in turn return it to the Senate in it’s original form. Just a delaying tactic, the government will have its way.
ferfcukssake, it’s spelled TURDeau.
That stuff looks great but by the time you paid exchange and other Canadian levies wouldn’t you have to consider becoming an alcoholic to make it all pay for itself?
Indeed. This ‘infrastructure bank’ has boondoggle written all over it. Not surprising as the de facto PM, Gerald Butts, is the architect of another boondoggle of epic proportion, the Ontario Green Energy Act. Most beneficiaries are Liberal insiders like former LPC president Mike Crawley, who makes 25$ million a year whether he sells ‘green’ energy or not.
In the last recession the Harper government simply borrowed at 1-2% interest rate to finance infrastructure projects. Those ‘private’ investors will want at least 8-10% and we all know who will pay for it.
“No government should have this perpetually increasing tax” Try that on the City of Saskatoon.
It’s pretty easy to make that stuff oneself.
People think alcohol is legal, but try running a still and making a buck off it, and the mafia will be at your door with armed goons soon enough.
