Blowout 205

An eclectic mix of energy and climate news from around the world:

A 6GW wind and solar farm in Australia to connect with Singapore via a submarine HVDC cable; OPEC’s production cut extension; how Russia controls oil prices; surging US shale oil production; nuclear in Bangladesh, Japan, UK and Sweden; rare earths in coal; tree troubles in Germany and Poland; new EU renewables targets; Ireland’s CO2 emissions; hot rock energy storage; Tesla’s electric truck; Al Gore on making money from climate change and Qatar runs out of sand.

  1. What a stupid project to do to a nice part of Australia. Is that 6GW of generating capacity or at the receiving end of the cable? The losses on that cable and all the inverters each end are going to be enormous. How are they going to find cold water in The Pilbara to cool all the inverters?

  2. The cost of power would be absolutely brutal compared to coal or nuclear. Industry would thrive like Ontario’s – in other words crash. China and India are going with coal. Won’t be long until they own us.
