  1. Fell asleep many a night listening to Art. Always had the impression that he was skeptical about the paranormal unlike the ones who followed him.

  2. I occasionally listened to Art Bell late at night while driving in my car. He was truly great. He had a succession of nut jobs, conspiracy theorists and loons on his show, but he treated them all with respect. He let them tell their stories, which gave me a lot of insight into how people think. R.I.P. Mr. Bell.

    1. ‘gave me a lot of insight into how people think’
I think that’s true. When people have certain ideas about how things work, they have often arrived at those conclusions by giving a good deal of thought to it. What might seem impossible to you or me makes perfectly logical sense to them.

  3. Best Twitter comment that reflects my own observations, from listening to his show back in the day.

“Fond memories of listening to late night conspiracy theories and crazy callers.”

It was great entertainment at the time, but the disturbing part was, many of those callers were dead serious about their bizarre belief systems. Woke me up to how many nuts there really are out there.

  4. He could express skepticism in the most respectful way. It was the pose of relaxed delight in chewing over the paranormal that had me falling asleep every night listening to his show. Sad when he left the air, sad there is no more chance for a return. He’s learning the greatest mystery now. RIP.

  5. Art Bell was also a radio amateur and now joins the ranks of what we hams call silent keys.

  6. Early in my career, when I worked well into the wee hours (to support my 3-kiddies), I was kept company by Art who always seemed a rational bloke who patiently entertained the most ludicrous of callers and theories. A wonderful voice and personality in a VERY unique broadcast niche. Art struck me as a really nice (if not somewhat “out there”) guy. RIP to him. Now he can watch the earth’s magnetic poles reverse from heaven … safe from the ensuing death and destruction.

  7. Now did he die of natural causes or did an alien do him in? The mystery deepens. Did he get too close to the truth?

  8. As others, I spent a lot of time driving at night in the 90s. When local AM radio turned down their frequencies at night, I could pick up Art Bell at a station in Salt Lake and another at Minneapolis from northern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Being a back woods hick, I was amazed at some of the callers. Never heard that stuff before except maybe on the Twilight Zone.

His show certainly was set apart from typical talk radio.

    1. Apparently the plural of drek is Drex and he is unlistenable. A sanctimonious Aussie telling Canadians what he thinks should be important to them.

    2. tom@drum, I too was once entertained by Coast to Coast am. And in the two hours prior each night, by Those Old Radio Shows. Until CHQR 770, in their wisdom, replaced them both, with crap.

      1. Yup, Corus f’d up big when they dropped C2C. We listened to it every night for as long as I can remember at the lake. Now its gone, just like Art. I have no idea what we’ll listen to now….

Godspeed Mr. Bell, thank you for the memories….
