  1. – So what else is new?

It was one of the biggest betrayals of Canadian politics. Jean Chretien was facing an election, I believe the one that put him in power, and he had announced he’d be bringing-in “tough new gun laws”; so gun owners decided to get-in the first licks. The local gun clubs sent their members out to get Liberal Party memberships.

Ya’ see, the way the game is scripted in Canada, somebody who wants to run for a Party in a riding, goes to the riding association – consisting of all the card-carrying Party members in that riding. There’re usually only ~100-or-so in every riding; and all the gun club members holding Liberal memberships, they formed the majorities in many ridings across Canada. I imagine the candidate selections would’ve gone largely like this:

” – So Mister Anonymous, what are your views on gun control?” “Oh, gun control is GREAT! We need lots more of it – we need to get all those naughty guns OUT of CANADA!” “Right; we’ll let you know. NEXT!!!”

If Jean Chretien was the slightest bit interested in playing the game the way it’s scripted, his only option would be to tell the Heads of the riding associations, “Yeah I know – they form a majority in your riding’s association; but they’re still only a small minority of the people in the riding. You’re gonna’ have to get out there and beat the bushes to get enough new Liberal Party members to out-vote them, or we’re going to have a pro-gun Parliament next time around!” But Chretien was not the least bit interested in following inconvenient procedures – he announced he was going to ignore the riding associations and parachute-in whatever candidates he chose.

Over 80 of them were elected – how many of them would’ve received as many as ten votes down in the ‘States? – it would’ve been properly viewed as a dastardly usurpation of the political process, and Chretien would’ve been roundly defeated.

And every Prime Minister since Chretien has done the same thing.

  2. This is about crippling the NDP. Singh can’t possibly win a seat in any of the ridings except Burnaby. The longer he’s out of the House, the greater the ongoing collapse of the NDP will be. Trudeau needs all those Dipper voters to have any chance of retaining government in 2019.

I have no sympathy with Singh’s stupidity either. He could have asked any one of his backbenchers to take a powder and give him a seat in the House, as has been done many times before. So now Singh is getting the just rewards for his stupidity.

    1. Peter Julian is wildly unhappy about it, but there’s nothing he or Singh can do about it. The PM calls by-elections, not the third party in the House. Given when the seat became vacant, he doesn’t have to call one until next March. Jagmeet Singh had his chance years ago but decided not to ask one of his members to step down. He’s now being crushed by his own silliness.

  3. OK, so that explains Burnaby-South. What about the other two? Have they not been vacant long enough or what is the criteria?

  4. What’s the point of Jag sitting in the H of C shouting argy bargy?
He’s better off touring the country full time.
