  1. Opinion: I am a PPC candidate and I am not a racist

    On Wednesday an op-ed appeared in the Spectator’s opinion section. Written by Evan Balgord, Executive Director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, it called for Mohawk College to cancel an event at which Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, and YouTube talk-show host, David Rubin, were to discuss the erosion of freedom of expression in Canada.

    Reacting to Balgord’s call to arms, a local group of Antifa activists has vowed to cause mayhem should the event at Mohawk college go ahead as planned. Their name, incidentally, is short for anti-Fascist; a paradox given their totalitarian behaviour.

    Of course, Balgord’s insistence that the free expression rights of a federal party leader be quashed underscores the importance of this topic and the scheduled talk. I’ll return to that in a moment.

    But first I want to examine the justification Balgord gives for employing the methods of totalitarian regimes.

    He makes the claim that freedom of speech and freedom of assembly must be quashed because Maxime Bernier and the People’s Party promotes racism.

    By that kind of fractured logic, I must be a racist too.

    I am a member of the People’s Party. In fact, I am likely more “evil” than most. You see, I worked on the PPC immigration policy and I am a PPC candidate in London, Ont.

    Does this make me a racist? In Balgord’s logic it does.

    But the Senate of Canada considered my years of effort in reconciling people of different faiths, especially Jews, Christians and Muslims, and together promote peace, as worthy to award me in 2017 with the Senate Sesquicentennial Medal celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of our Dominion.

    I am professor emeritus, political science, at Western University where some of my work was dedicated to defending Canada’s liberal democratic values of rights and freedoms against those seeking to erode them.

      I can see why Scheep is afraid of having him in the CPC.

      1. Another foolish move by Scheer. I had decided to vote CPC to best get Libs dumped, but I am having second thoughts again. Max is soliciting extra dollars to deal with the excessive security costs becsuse of these anti free speechers. I am planning to donate. The free speech angle makes this a good cause, even if you are not voting PPC.

  3. The far left gets their way about almost everything in this country. (Except perhaps where raw consumerism triumphs) Muh Costco!

    I was a right-winger in my university years and voted Reform in 1997. I didn’t change much over twenty years but the country did. What was centrist then is viewed as beyond the pale by our progressive mainstream today.

    Bernier isn’t much more “radical” than Manning in 97 but he’s essentially barred from democracy.

    Conservatives conserve nothing. It just keeps getting more clown world all the time.

      1. Their campaign appears to be a complete dud because we aren’t seeing much of them except what the legacy media lets us see. And their campaign actually will have been a complete dud if they don’t find away out from under the wet blanket the media is trying to keep them under. I’m not going to say Scheer should be another Trump, I don’t think Trump’s personal style can have the same appeal in Canada as it does in the U.S.A., but he needs to grasp how and why Trump got the support he did, and figure out how to get around the Canadian media to reach Canadian voters who aren’t content but don’t know what they can do about it. PM Castreau is stepping in more dogsh*t than incumbent Liberals normally do after only one term in government and they have also achieved significantly more damage to the country than a government usually does in one term. A main opposition party should at this point have control of the game and only be needing to concentrate on not dropping the ball. They have to worry about the PPC chipping off a small margin on the right and costing them the election. I won’t blame the PPC for that, the CPC should have plenty to spare.

    2. The MSM and entrenched politicos are partly responsible. They got away with shutting out Faith Goldy from the Toronto mayor’s election, so why not try it again. Shut down anyone saying things you don’t like. Just call them haters.

    Wow! That is some broad brush. Even the police are supporting neo-nazis by enforcing the law fairly; and the college will be nazis too if they dare give a political candidate space to campaign?

    If I didn’t know that all the Leftist Progressives were so non violent, I would expect them to shut down Maxime Bernier’s planned campaign stop with violence? Especially after this not so veiled exhortation published in this newspaper.

    1. It’s worse than that. By the purethought approach, because The Hamilton Spectator had a story that mentioned Max, that means that they support him and are now racist too.

      That’s the approach that the Conservative Party are taking to TheRebel, and I pointed it out that way to my MP.

      1. Well, Kevin has company. The best thing for the ROC is Sock Buoy’s re-election. We now have a target defined instead of Liberal Lite Herr Schneer. We’ve come full circle from 1981 and PET. Nothing has changed in the interim and the debt is probably higher. Outside the Tronna (I’m from there folks, so I know how they think), Ottawa (I served there), Montreal (I lived there when PET received the froggy’s blessing one riotous night, during the FLQ years and dodged the bombs you in Tronna never heard) and got an education in what Kanaduh is all about, plus what schooling taught me to escape to western Kanaduh and seek my fortune.
        I can happily state I achieved that last goal in spades, despite the efforts of Zentrul Kanaduh’s attempts to derail that effort over the years. I can tell you jealousy rules down east. It’s that obvious. It’s what I call “The Tronna Disease”….folks peering over your fence to see what you have that they don’t and running to Mommy .Gov for redress.
        This country is broken, nay it never was really a construct from 1867 on. They at least taught History when I went Ontario grade school, today folks are more focused on their nether regions. It’s dysfunctional by design and our current “Constipuntication” is a sham for anyone living outside Tronna, Mon’real, Ottywah, especially when votes cast two time zones away hold sway before your polls close.       2. And by magically trigger I mean just that, magically trigger. Expecting magic to bridge the gap between reality and whishes is default Leftist thinking on an every day basis. In reality if you want a Political Sea Change you need to have a strong charismatic leader to inspire the confidence of a portion of the masses and a preplanned step-by-step way to implement the agenda.

        When the American colonists began their Civil War(today mythically called the American Revolution) there were only 3% of the population who were ready to fight and lay down their lives for the concept of becoming independent from the British Crown.
        And the American colonists only won because Britain had to fight France, Spain, and the Nederlands at the same time.
        There was a time when the Continental Army was in retreat and had almost lost.

        What will it be when there is civil war in Canada or the U.S.? Are there not powerful nations who hate us and would train and supply an endless insurgency here in North America until both we in the West and the United States are bled dry?
        And why wouldn’t Russia and China and Iran and Cuba and even France send operatives and military support to multiple factions to fracture our societies?
        Have not Canada and the U.S. interfered in the civil wars of other countries? Why do we get to have a civil war in isolation?

  9. I recently moved away from the Hamilton suburbs and have some thoughts on this.

    1. The Spectator is a declining far left rag (Torstar Group) in a far left city. Whattya expect ?
    2. It never made sense to me for Max to hold this in Hamilton. He has a tinkers chance in Hell of winning a seat in this area. Rubin is a high profile guest. Hold the meeting somewhere where it would be more beneficial. You think Renata can win her seat, hold it in Etobicoke North for god sakes.
    3. Antifa in Hamilton is actually a rather large force. You can check out coverage of the Locke Street “riots” to see what they get up to locally lately. They run a little more rampant here than elsewhere (and the Hamilton cops are soft on lefties because of the make up of the local (union) populace)
    4. The HWDA PPC riding association asked me to buy tickets since I am a member. They were $50/$80 a pop. Ahh, no shanks.

    So, a bit of stupidity all around.

    That said, smash them. Smash the little “Antifa” black ̶f̶a̶c̶e̶ boots good and smash them hard.

    There is no reason to stop the socialist/fascist from writing garbage, though the newspaper, perhaps, should at least write in disclaimer in reference to the socialist/fascist comment being outside of normal course of discussion.

    This must be the new generation that came out of schools of proletariat ready to destroy anything and anyone that opposes their unknowing.
    The next generation will have to live and survive the totalitarian idiots if not joining them.

    1. In the present state of affairs, it’s likely there’s so much white space in the daily layout that Spec editors will take any copy they can get. Note it is an op-ed, which most papers treat as a free-for-all, er, free-for-some, anyway.

      So atop a lack of critical faculties on the editors’ part, beggars for content can’t really be choosers.

      Also, Coulda Had Salim! A man of decency, intelligence, and generosity, but Scheer rejected him as a Conservative candidate.

  17. The (Media) all claim to be un-biased, (who, what, where, when, why, and how) dispensers of the truth.
    All who publish should be forced by law to uphold that commitment, or label themselves the satire they are.
    Currently, they must by law, provide disclaimers for opinion pieces to avoid being sued under Libel Law.

    The standard…
    “the opinions expressed by this writer are his alone and NOT supported by (insert newspaper name here)”
    … isn’t a strong enough disclaimer.

    Change the law Mr. President, force publishers to state their biases and/or disclaim their publishing with this, much stronger wording,

    “the following opinion is the writers alone, possibly propaganda and/or NOT based on either fact or reality”

    Force them by law to use that disclaimer in BOLD on everything that includes a opinion, under threat of large fines and/or prison time for non-compliance.
    Force all Media… TV, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines.
    All of them, either show your Bias(affiliation) or label everything you publish as the made-up shite it is.
    All real journalists would applaud such a law, as would many libel lawyers!

    Force them to self identify as a (National Enquirer) type satirical publication or be fined and/or imprisoned.

    How else do we stop the Propaganda in our supposed free press, anyone ?

He presumes to be the anointed one who knows the hatred in other people’s minds without any evidence but the conviction of his peers, those being his fellow scribblers of the institutional left. The transference by these guys is incredible. As a free speech absolutist, I see nothing wrong with speech that some deem as “hateful”. If people aren’t intelligent enough to sort out for themselves what speech is to be considered and what should be discarded then they need to learn some basic critical thinking, something that has been intentionally excised from socialized education.
