Police are investigating the owners of a privately run Montreal-area nursing home after news that 31 patients died at the facility since mid-March.
At least five of the deceased residents had contracted COVID-19, Quebec Premier François Legault revealed on Saturday.
He promised a thorough public investigation into Résidence Herron in Dorval, where nurses spoke out on Saturday about conditions inside the home.
They said residents were left in unsanitary conditions, many unfed and without water for more than 24 hours, because staff were failing to show up.
Something similar happened in Ontario due to the virus. Answers are scarce:

Very heart wrenching.
So, what did the other 26 seniors in that facility die of?
Also, according to protocol, if a person was to come in contact with a carrier, was the governmental mandate not followed, the workers self-isolating for their and their families protection? Who would be responsible for replacing and ensuring other workers were filling the gaps to maintain the safe care of the elderly.
I find it exceedingly objectionable that it was stated that the investigation will be lengthy and time/resourse expensive. Will there actually be more money spent on the investigation which could be better spent on the supplies needed to provide compassionate care to those realizing they are so easily expendable?
“So, what did the other 26 seniors in that facility die of?”
Global warming, of course. How dare you forget that?
That’s pretty bitter. I have to wonder if you have ever cared for an elderly relative at home, especially when their mind is going but not gone. We tried with my grandmother but she wanted her own place not with family. We tried it with my mother and she walked out on us. Frankly I wouldn’t want to live with some of my kids either. I just hope I die before I need to be “in a home”.
And here I was always told how Quebec was the very model of what liberal progressive society had to offer.
All the talk about generous social safety net.
The lesson here is that no matter how Ernest the pledge, the government is not fully capable of taking care of everyone.
The realist in me see’s the unstoppable force of government mandated rule ( in this case to self isolate) a limited budget, and the unmovable reality that extended life doesn’t necessarily mean quality of life.
Orange man really screwed this up. Thank God Trudeau’s in charge here — Unifor journalist
Appalling supervised neglect. First they take your dollars and then they leave you for dead.
Let’s also ask this question:
Did ALL the staff entrusted with care have PPE; to protect themselves from the Covid-19 producing virus?

“Did ALL the staff entrusted with care have PPE” – probably not! and budget constraints were flexed. and how could you hire replacements if individuals are paid to stay home (particularly if it would be advantageous to not work for less at a private long term care facility.) fustercluck for aged individuals on pension only. head office for the family that runs 9 residences is in ottawa. are we having fun yet.
hans, the operator has now responded that PPE was not to be had for love or money. now i ask you, has anyone see any broadcaster say anywhere, anytime that > or < 98% of all individuals infected recover and go on with their lives. what a mess.
Hans and Johnny, I was changing our Baptist church sign, on a balmy sunny morning last week, when a young fellow happened by. We struck up a good conversation (from about 20 feet away), about Christianity, the Wuhan virus, etc. He told me he works at a seniors home here in Fredericton, and that nobody working there had any PPE, including any facemasks. He works at the minimum wage. Here in the Maritimes neatly all minimum wage jobs are taken up by white locals — people like this fellow who mean well.
Here working class people have good sanitary habits. The problem is that the senior care homes have been caught unawares, not prepared for the Wuhan pandemic. What to watch out for is heavy-handed government intrusion into the private senior care industry, with over-priced unionized workers, etc. We should not blame minimum wage workers who aren’t paid enough to work on the front lines risking their health.
P.s., here in New Brunswick we have 116 Chinese virus cases, zero deaths, seven people in hospital, three in ICU.
Staff failing to show up. How callous and and selfish can you get? Pretty much the attitude that years of socialism breeds. F-off and die, literally, I’m all that matters.
Reminder, this was Quebec, nobody will go to jail for the deaths.
Corrupt to its core.
Absolutely horrific. My deepest condolences to all the residents and their families.
So who is going to hang for abandoning their post? Nobody.
My mother’s facility admitted to their first case yesterday.
I doubt I will see her again, but the owners have done a lot to prevent the spread.
Of course you should never piss on the money tree,
But in a socialist home, you’re fucked.
This is near my house. I live in LaSalle which is just next door and has similar problems. The common problem in most of these old aged homes is there is not enough staff working and too many managers. In this case the home was owed and managed by a private individual and his three daughters if I understand correctly. There was some sort of dispute with the management and local health authority. Everyone in Quebec know the care in these homes is a problem but nobody does anything. It is an embarrassment to everyone.
You have to be thankful that anyone dealing with the public is showing up for work. The media has whipped up a great deal of fear over this virus. The lack of solid and truthful information from China allowed whatever narrative to be developed by the media. They decided how to report this, what spin to put on it, and now we are living with those decisions. People are frightened that they will get this virus and die. They are frightened they will pass it on to their children or loved ones, and that will kill them. The media says nothing to change these perceptions.
Well said, sir.
Right to Die is big in Quebec. They’ll be pushing Obligation to Die very soon.
We’ll all appreciate having the “Right to Die” if our kids abandon us to one of these slow-motion crematoria. Time to update our Living Wills.
Until they show up with a black capsule. They will tell you to bite down on it. You’ll respond that you’re fine and have a few good years left. The’ll tell you that doesn’t matter, bite down anyway.
I think we better be looking way deeper than a virus at this one.
More bad news from LaSalle, Quebec…
https://www.tvanouvelles.ca/2020/04/13/53-nouveaux-cas-au-chsld-de-lasalle
26 dead 53 new cases.
So what killed more people here? The virus, or staff members fleeing in panic over the media hyped virus? The last report I read said only 5 residents were confirmed Covid deaths. The rest?
