1. Mount Royal really isn’t a university. It has that in its name, but it is basically a lunatic left wing kindergarten. That’s where Nenshi comes from which should explain all you need to know.

   1. Back in the day Mount Royal and Grant McEwan were colleges that people too stupid to get into universities attended. Then one day they granted degrees and another day were called universities.

         Here in Alberta, it’s the government that actually bestows degrees. It’s the post-secondary institutions that provide the education and grants them on the government’s behalf. At least that’s what I remember from my Ph. D. convocation ceremony.

         Some 40 years ago, smaller colleges wanted to become degree-granting institutions and they convinced the government to change the existing legislation to make it possible. After that, just about everybody and his dog could become a university, though, in some cases, they had to change their names to reflect their new status.

         It didn’t always have a good effect. For example, the old Camrose Lutheran College mutated into Augustana University College and started cranking out pieces of paper. Some of the departments weren’t accredited, so the worth of those degrees was questionable. Eventually Augustana became over-ambitious, running itself into the ground and, from what I heard, was sold to the University of Alberta for the token dollar.
