Telegraph- E-scooter blamed for fire that burned down seven homes

A total of 10 fire engines and 60 firemen worked through the night to control the blaze, which spread through seven out of the eight houses in the terrace.

A total of 149 fires caused by exploding e-bike batteries were recorded by the London Fire Brigade in 2023, an increase of 71 per cent from 2022, according to figures provided to The Telegraph.

  1. No Firewalls between the units?

the batteries seem to be a good choice for arsonists now.

    1. I am a former commercial interior designer. I remember in the early 80’s there was a tremendous fire on a construction site on Lawrence Avenue (?) in Toronto. All the attached town homes went up just like so much firewood. The Ontario Building Code was quickly changed to have 8″ thick concrete block walls every second wall which would be 48″ higher than the surrounding roofs(apparently, soot and burning ashes need to be this far away from flammable surfaces).

I think I must have been burned at the stake in a previous life. I am paranoid about house fires! I would never want to be responsible for having designed a building which had a fire causing death.

      1. I do not think that that was the code then. Maybe it was a local ordinance but as I recall, a masonry firewall was only specified if there were more than 5 units in a rowhouse or the rowhouse exceeded the building area allowed under Part 9 of the building code. Also, the parapet (height above roof) would be a minimum of 8″, not 48″. Wood stud buildings are extremely vulnerable to fire when under construction before dry wall and fire separations are complete.

        1. I once owned a condo town house that was built in the 70s. Concrete and cement block from the foundation to the roof.

          1. solid concrete is best also for sound dampening. but obviously costs more by l wd guess as much as 5 times.
and until we turf the TURDeau dont expect housing to be created by a magic liberal wand of any standard.

    2. I am retired from the building industry so I am going by the Code in effect back when!
In Canada the typical townhouses are separated by “fire separations” which differ from “fire walls”. A fire separation is a time rated wall with no penetrations and is usually a stud wall covered in fire rated dry wall. They merely delay fire penetration until the fire fighters arrive, hopefully promptly.
I have mixed feelings about the proliferation of rechargeable high capacity batteries. I love my electric bicycle, electric golf trolley, portable electric leaf blower and whipper/snipper. But none of these compare to the energy packed in an electric car battery.

      1. I concur. There was a fire at a neighbour’s house a few weeks ago (a three unit townhouse). Their end unit was gutted and the middle unit made unliveable due to water and smoke damage but the structure remained. The other end unit was undamaged except for smoke. The only separation is dry wall which must be a minimum thickness to slow fire spreading.

      2. The Code requires “Area Separation Walls” which has variables of: Type of Construction (from wood frame to concrete), floor area, number of stories, occupancy type, and wall openings. It is possible that these 6 units were less than the floor area required for separation into what would be termed a “separate” building (despite being attached). Area separation walls have a higher degree of fire rating than a typical fire wall … usually a two-hour fire assembly. So in theory, a fire could burn for two hours before breaching the “separation”. I would suspect there was an “area separation wall” between the 6th and 7th unit – LOL.

The code also rigorously establishes fire protections based on types of use … which means the types of materials used within. In other words … you wouldn’t mix a paint factory with a residential apartment block. I believe the building codes are sadly lagging far behind the e-vehicle hazards and need immediate upgrading. Do we need another Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire disaster to revise the building code? What’s the body count we are willing to sacrifice on the altar of “net zero”?

        1. What is the body count we are willing to sacrifice for “net zero”? should be about zero.

What is the body count the government plans to sacrifice for “net zero”? as much as they can get away with.

    1. anybody else notice crappe from chirer is so stripped down, so much cutting corners make it cheap cheap cheap cheap to the point the device, appliance, tool NO LONGER FUNCTIONS.

robertson screw driver bits lm convinced they are nowhere near as hard tempered as n american mfg were.
you could see a different colour in the tip, that was the ‘tip’ it was different.
l learned after long use to hold them exactly virtical and grind off the rounded edges worked like new.

its no wonder they sell them a dozen at a time now. and who the FCUK came up with the idea paint them all red no matter the size?

yep. ye old ‘mare in chirer’ tq brian mulruin handing so much of our manufacturing and bye bye quality control.
another tip off: NO MORE SERIAL NUMBERS ON THE TOOLS. why is that? because quality control function got downloaded to the cussomer. is it past the 3 months ‘warantee’? nope you get a pc of junk to replace it. past 3 months? ship it to the cdn distributor for the same cost as replacement or *whatever* the tactic is.

  2. The other half of the “e-scooter” problem must be injuries.

I see big people who obviously don’t want to walk just bookin’ it down sidewalks, the side of the road, through traffic etc.

Injuring themselves or others must be a problem because some of these people ride like idiots.

    1. the speed at which one moves on a cycle compared to mere walking? where does the *forward* momentum GO when the rider GOES down? leftoid brain, meet concrete at 10 15 mph = 15-25 kmh.

      CRACK !!!

fweeet !!!! paging darwin award committee!!

lve been riding a45 yr old Raliegh 10 spd since new and fell badly twice. with a helmet on. thats why lm still lucid AND derived 1000s miles of health benefit. (and saved abt 50,000 in car expenses since l took a Taurus off the road in 2007)

what is it leftoidals believe they are immune to laws of economics, social order and now physics?

  3. What’s needed is a fireproof case to put these inside of when they are charged or otherwise not being used. If it’s hot, don’t open it.

      1. ‘charge’ l see what u did kenji lol
yo, unwho, if it aint real real convenient most peepull gonna lose interest in the habit.

    1. If that worked they would be sold in fire-proof cases. But it makes me wonder if the batteries are defective or the charging units?

    2. I had a swollen Samsung phone a few years ago that I charged in the oven at night until I could get a new phone. Figured it would contain it a bit, give smoke alarms time to wake me up.

Pretty sure a lithium battery in a sealed box = bomb.

  4. I am beginning to warm toward E scooters. Everyone should have a few.
Think of the people you could gift one to.
    Spread the love.
    Feel the warmth.

  5. I’ve seen a couple of videos recently showing the -Chinese- authorities confiscating the same cheap Chinese-built scooters because they’re burning down apartment blocks in China.

Which I find hilarious, really. Here in the West, zero effective regulation. In China, they take your bike and toss you in the can fore a couple weeks to get your attention. And they still get fires all over the place, because all the cops are meant to do is crush dissent and make the government look good.

I actually own a e-scooter these days, because bad knee. A kick scooter is a nice solution for in town and for “walks” on the walking paths. I bought a European one so I’d have somebody to sue if it goes on fire.

I charge mine outside, because you can’t sue if you’re dead in a house fire.

    1. “…because all the cops are meant to do is crush dissent and make the government look good.”

      So like in Canada?
      (sorry could not resist)

      1. crikey ziket dere it is agin. scorn and derision on the ‘profession’ that 30 years ago were societies stalwarts.
        now theyre just parasitic WARTS.

today’s skill testing question: is the ghastly number of severe police misconducts including shooting kids, beating up the elderly and general mayhem as portrayed in the news, . . . .
was it always this bad? or is the frequency truly an indicator they are going seriously rotten inside???

in any event l hold a particular distaste matched by immense sense of satisfaction any time any of these hard core bullies stops a bullet.
