Oh, Joy

Driving- ‘Speed assist’ now mandatory on new vehicles in Europe

The system was a requirement on all newly-designed models starting in July 2022, but now it’s mandatory on all new vehicles registered in the E.U. as of July 7, 2024. The regulation allowed automakers to employ in their cars any of four options, all of which meet the requirements. Two of them are only warning systems, known as “informative” or “advisory” ISA — they make a warning sound, or a vibration through the steering wheel.

  1. My grandfather owned a 1957 Olds 88 (pink) that had a driver-adjustable “speed minder” buzzer. Every time lead-foot granddad would hit the freeway … his speedometer started buzzing, and my grandmother would nag him to ease off the gas pedal. No, I will NEVER forget that sound or the absurdity of it all as grandad was constantly tripping the buzzer and grandma was bitching at him. Yes … of course it was grandma who set the buzzer to come on at 62 mph.

Great … so now we have the e-version of my bitchy, naggy, grandmother.

  2. Soon they’ll have to add in the Overtake button from F1 cars so that you can pass on the highway, because the hard limit “speed assist” won’t let you any more.

  3. 2028, your car drives you to the police station when you speed.

Prediction, not comedy. You -know- they want to do this.

  4. The fact that you can override it is meaningless; you have to do it every time you start the car. The cruise control on my 2018 Nissan is like that. I used to use cruise all the time, but now I never do. Nissan calls it “intelligent” cruise control. I curse the invention of forward facing sensors.

    1. “… curse the invention of forward facing sensors.”
      Have you tried duct tape?
