One of the reasons the Roman Empire was so big geographically and lasted so long and mostly peaceful is that they had a warmer period during their ruling centuries which, because most food crops were abondent, conqueror and conquered were happy full belly people.
Yup. Good point, Metalguru. Starving people tend to get peevish and before you know it, they are off attacking people who have food.
